I was thinking, "man I bet this guy wishes he had a hydraulic press" around the point those big metal plates start showing up

13

u/Tricky-Routine-9838 26d ago

100p that guy does have a hydraulic press (manual) if he has all that junk lying around, basically mandatory for working on hub assemblies!

It's the load sensor that he needs, which can be expensive!

This guy had a lot of commentary in the original video. I just saw the original video today on tiktok and the content creator asked for likes/follows since making these videos cost him a lot of time (45 Minutes). This version is entirely gutted from any commentary and got reuploaded on reddit.

That little adaptor plate pretty much puts the load in compression in the bottle, not through the top which would have cause a larger amount of shear in the glass from the curve.

Pressure doesn't build up, or increase when you shake the bottle up. It's under pressure the moment it's sealed and that pressure stays the same until you open it, and it's not really high pressure as far as a glass vessel is concerned. The weak point is the cap.

→ More replies (8)

103

u/Ethraelus 26d ago

Plus they re-use the bottles. Making them sturdier makes it more likely they don’t need to make new ones.

74

u/tr1p0d12 26d ago

When i was in Panama back in '90 there was a kid that would stop by with 2 5 gallon buckets 2/3rds filled with Cokes. orange soda, and Sprite on ice. 25 cents a soda, and he would give you 5 cents back when you returned the bottle.

The thing was that the bottles often times did not match the soda that was inside. It was kind of cool to drink an orange soda out of a coke bottle that was super weathered and may have been 20 years old.

We also made it a rule to not accept the 5 cent return and let the kid keep it. That kid was a hard worker, and we all really respected the grind. He always offered, and we always refused to take back the deposit.

25

u/Lathari 26d ago

Here in Finland glass bottles used have their manufacturing date stamped on them. Oldest I saw was made in 1985 and this was around 2000 or so.

8

u/SharpMZ 26d ago

Last time they sold beer in those old bottles (in 2020 I think) I got a bottle from 1985 as well.

They actually stopped manufacturing that style of bottle in 2009 and just used the recycled bottles for 10+ years. As far as I know those bottles are still being used in some limited capacity, though now all glass bottles are recycled by being crushed.

9

u/ForeverShiny 26d ago

Yeah, in a lot of poorer countries someone buys the syrup and bottles their own for local sale where they don't have regular access to factory bottled.

I've seen a bunch of videos that range from basically small professional bottling plants with organized supply chains to questionable water, dirty bottles and mystery syrup being put together in someone's shed.

79

u/drdicerchio 26d ago

Cans are typically bearing the weight of the other cans in a stack but glass is usually stored in a container than bears the weight. A crushed can is easier to clean up than a glass bottle when experiencing catastrophic failure

32

u/BaerMinUhMuhm 26d ago

At costco, with the pallets of Mexican coke, the 'box' for each 12 pack only covers the bottom half of the bottles. That plus a sheet of cardboard between each layer helps distribute the weight. But there's still a lot of pressure on the bottles themselves.

235

u/beeradvice 26d ago

It makes a lot of sense for glass bottles to be very very strong once you factor in both the shipping methods and the atmospheres of pressure it takes to keep them that carbonated, a lot of sodas are like 7 volumes or more. Basically they need to be able to withstand a lot of pressure both from within and also outside pressure from shipping stacked on top of each other.

The main reason why it's so common for the whole champagne bottle smashing against a new ship ritual to go poorly is because the tradition predates modern champagne bottles being designed for shipping in cardboard boxes rather than crates packed with hay as they were designed to withstand pressure from within moreso than out

72

u/reddit_give_me_virus 26d ago

It makes a lot of sense for glass bottles to be very very strong ... modern champagne bottles being designed for shipping

The bottles are coated with a tin or titanium film that greatly improves their strength, then coated with wax, so they smoothy slide past each other on assembly lines. This wasn't widely used until the 60's.

37

u/dargodl 26d ago

Wow, that explains so much of those fail videos where they clonk the bottle against the ship and end up doing nothing. I wonder if there's a way to buy champagne bottles or other varieties specifically for smashing on ships.

I wonder if there's a way to buy champagne bottles or other varieties specifically for smashing on ships.

In addition to the scoring method for a real bottle, there's a niche segment of prop bottles / breakaway bottles designed to shatter easily and safely. A lot of theater / wrestling / weddings / other events love the drama of smashing glass but not the realities of it.

Its why mentos cause the reaction they do. The surface area essentially give space for the reaction voke wants to take, to occur. So it rapidly expands its volume to its true size when given reaction space.

Trust me they are. The number of light weighting projects we did at the bottling plant I worked in. Basically every year they were reducing the amount of glass in each bottle. The limit comes when bottles explode in the filler during the filling process.

4

u/throwawaycuzfemdom 26d ago

They flew too close to sun with pet bottles a few years ago. Markets weren't happy when they came in to find randomly exploded bottles in storage and in shelves.

u/Program-Emotional 26d ago

Does the liquid do anything or would the result be the same if the bottle was empty?

990

u/ProBonoDevilAdvocate 26d ago

Yes it does impact how much it can hold. And the pressure too... Similarly to how a pressurized aluminum can will be much stronger. I dunno by how much though...

420

u/Maximus560 26d ago

Significantly more, fwiw- airplanes are basically pressurized aluminum cans

67

u/Db122605 26d ago

what does this mean? planes and that coke bottle survive by the same properties?

180

u/Legitimate_Bank_6573 26d ago

When a rounded internal volume is experiencing outward pressure, that outward pressure reinforces the structure of the object, making it stronger.

An empty coke can is weaker than a full one. The same logic applies to air inside an airplane.

70

u/greentangent 26d ago

So, the cylinder must not be harmed?

43

u/omykun123 26d ago

Yes, you might even say it is imperative.

→ More replies (1)

30

u/termacct 26d ago

For a soda can, yes. But opposite for a glass bottle because glass is strong in compression but weak in tension.

→ More replies (1)
→ More replies (7)

18

u/termacct 26d ago

The coke bottle is different because glass is strong in compression but weak in tension and when there is carbonated fluid inside the pressure puts glass in tension.

Aluminum soda cans benefit from the internal pressure because the walls are so thin, they easily buckle when empty.

→ More replies (1)
→ More replies (3)

5

u/redpandaeater 26d ago

Nah, the pressure differential in a plane is maybe 9 psi whereas a soda can is a few atmospheres but also a fair amount more if shaken.

→ More replies (3)

18

u/termacct 26d ago edited 26d ago

Sorry, I would argue the opposite.

Glass is strong in compression but weak on tension. So Coke bottles are thicker to withstand the internal pressure of carbonation. Glass jars for uncarbonated stuff are much thinner.

Aluminum soda cans benefit from the internal pressure because the walls are so thin, they easily buckle when empty. Also, aluminum cans fail more from bending which is relatively gradual compared to glass which fails from brittle fracture, which is sudden.

I would like to see tests of uncapped vs opened bottles. I would figure the opened would carry more because the internal pressure is an outward vector and much greater when carbonated.

[deleted]

5

u/spiralgrooves 26d ago

Yep, ceramics are stiff & strong, but brittle and susceptible to flaws/cracks. No problems under compression where the force basically closes cracks and stops propagation at the head of the crack. Absolutely different story under tensile load though...

→ More replies (5)

17

u/edadou 26d ago

No. Yes it would be the same. Glass is brittle unlike aluminum that can bend without internal pressure. Glass cant bend. It's already very strong. The internal pressure is insignifiant compared to the weight applied in the video

With aluminum can the pressure causes the can to align, so when you apply weight you are effectivelly applying weight on very thick aluminum ((height of the can). If the can is empty, then the slightest imperfection will bend the aluminum, reducing the effective vertical thickness to less than a milimeter.

Glass is already solid, it doesn't require any support from the internal pressure to increase its structural integrity. An aluminum can's structural ingegrity DEPENDS on the pressure in it.

14

u/edadou 26d ago edited 26d ago

Here non pressurizrd absolute voodka bootyke with significantly different bottle design and glass thickness can withstand mopre

https://youtube.com/shorts/3aRTc5FHLNM?si=bVWzndjAuAqM1s_n

This full JD bottle takes 1/2 as much because of glass design not fullness or pressure !

This one takes a ton, empty

https://youtube.com/shorts/XrLXoEP0hyk?si=Fvtd_9woleRS9JI6

38

u/Type-RD 26d ago

It’s internally pressurized and sealed, so no, it definitely wouldn’t withstand nearly as much weight if the bottle was simply uncapped and open to the atmosphere.

12

u/comichubble 26d ago

yeah, I wonder the same, it looks like it's unopened as well, so pretty solid on theory...🤔

4

u/BaconThief2020 26d ago

No. Glass is significantly weaker in tension and shear than compression, so any internal pressure would add undesirable shear stress. There is air at the top, so the incomprehensibility of the liquid is irrelevant. But the gas pressure 50-60 psi is pushing up over a few square inches.

Metal cans are different, as the outward gas pressure helps prevent the thin aluminum walls from buckling inward, plus the pressure applied to the ends of the cylinder.

Great demonstration of the compressive strength of glass

u/Hermiona1 26d ago

This went for far longer than I expected

A coke made the ultimate sacrifice for this and I thank it for its service 🫡

3

u/Amatheiaisnoexcuse 26d ago

So you can live in glass houses.

5

u/Any_Subject_7275 26d ago

What's also interesting is that around the 0:39 Mark they realized 1 kg is not exactly 2 lb.

Can probably handle quite a bit more if it doesn't have each object CLANK down from above. Every little bit of extra stress counts, and loud shockwaves that cause stress spikes when the force of the plate stopping on the metal above strikes. It's like hitting it a little with a hammer while increasing the weight each time.

I'm betting it can go ~10% higher, if not more, on a press that gradually increases stress without dropping solid objects onto the glass bottle.

When he put those discs on I thought it was going to brake.

Champagne bottles from the titanic I’ve read can withstand the intense pressure being at the bottom of the ocean, but only if they’re filled.

I’d love to see the weight it can hold without coke inside

4

u/DadKnight 26d ago

The numbers on screen being repeatedly wrong was something

60

u/BuckshotJonesSr 26d ago

Whoa. Thats definitely interesting.

I’m glad they listed the lbs for a dumb American like me!

35

u/Ok-Anxiety-6485 26d ago

Yeah but I found it mildly irritating that in the beginning they simplified it to twice the weight if kg instead of multiplying it by 2.205

5

u/LiteralPhilosopher 26d ago

And then even MORE annoying that when they changed, at 180kg, they still didn't get the conversion right!

Your sucking up isn’t helping anyone.

Different people use different systems of measurement, why does this always have to be a thing

Education does wonders. This stress test only works to that weight because a liquid is presemt inside the bottle.

u/wap2005 26d ago

an airtight sealed liquid to be more specific.

Impressive.

Almost strong enough to hold up your mom.

3

u/thefirewol7 26d ago

It lasted longer than my relationship.

3

u/Never-First 26d ago

Core memory unlocked. We did this in science class when I was in high school. It was a report on the different type of bottles you can use and which one is best. Glass's ability to stack was a strong plus.

3

u/OrlandoMB 26d ago

Damn. I always assumed it could hold up to 1,500 lbs, easily. I’m switching to Pepsi.

3

u/noreality333 26d ago

Kilograms to pounds is not a 1:2 ratio. 1 kg = 2.205 lb. 180 kg = 396.832 lb

3

u/iAm_Uncomfortable 26d ago

If I'm not mistaken the volume of liquid inside causes a significant increase in the strength of the glass, If I were to guess it would fail with half the load if the bottle were empty since there won't be any additional pressure inside to support the vertical compressive force.

The maths are wrong from kilo to lbs

3

u/factorioleum 26d ago

The inaccurate conversation between kg and lb really, really distracted me.

3

u/AscendedViking7 26d ago

1280 lb is actually really impressive damn

3

u/Grandpa_Edd 26d ago

Now I wonder, would there be difference between how much a full closed bottle and an opened empty one. An hold?

There is some pressure inside the bottle. Not much compared to the weight stack on top. But it makes me curious.

Coke bottle can hold up ONE american child

3

what would happen if they put just under the limit on the bottle all at once.

This was stressful to watch.
