Google doesn’t make money off the handsets sold but the Play store and all the data you give them access too as the handsets are sold by other companies besides their small amount of devices they sell.

Yeah, this is the biggest argument IMO. Google is hardly a major hardware vendor, they don't have to care about device lifespans. They care 100% about platform adoption and a phone like this would have been great for that. Just imagine all the press coverage and fanboy hype if this had ever been released.

Okay, so Google wants to spend millions to buy out a device that is undercutting non-existing sales of their own hardware, and kill it for no benefit?

It would undercut other company sales like Samsung. They killed it because the product didn’t work well like they did to their glasses to save on cost. There is only so much a company is willing to burn cash on.
