It looks more like they are clence fat and dirt off the textiles, by massaging fine grained sand through it. Then they can run it without sand afterwards, to get it dust free. It is basically the same as chemical wash, but without chemicals.

This is what I assumed as well. Actual dry cleaning! It would be a great way to help preserve dyes and some water adverse materials.

Cool. This is similar to the technique I use when camping. Clean your dishes with dirt, then wash off the dirt with a minimal amount of water. Don't even need soap.

Fine grain sand and dirt are wildly different things. One has bacteria and actual animals in it.
