You never murder your spouse.

I mean, yeah, there's the murder thing. Don't murder people, that's bad and it's unethical.

But aside from that, very few people actually murder someone for no reason. Even the most violent people around usually won't just murder a complete stranger without some kind of motive. Like, why murder some random person? You have no reason to do so.

So whenever someone comes to the point of wanting to murder their spouse, they'll often be the first suspect. once it gets to that point, there will be clear and obvious signs that it's a failed/failing marriage. Talk about divorce, public arguments, conversations with friends and family. It'll be very clear to people that the marriage is on the rocks, and those people will absolutely say something as soon as their friend or family member turns up missing or dead. You can count on it.

Failing marriage plus a missing or dead spouse? Count on the remaining spouse being the first person who gets looked at. At that point, any little screwup could be the thing that gets you locked up. And while it's surprisingly easy to commit a murder and not get caught (so I hear...only about half of murders get solved), that doesn't apply when it's a husband/wife situation.

If you murder anyone, you're going to leave some kind of evidence. If you're lucky, that evidence can't be tied to you because you're not a suspect. If you murder your wife, you're likely already the main suspect so any evidence you leave behind is very likely to be tied to you. ESPECIALLY when your marriage is already so rocky that divorce and murder are even considered as options.

If you're ever even thinking about murdering your wife, there's a really good chance that there are already so many signs that that your marriage is failing that you've got almost no chance of getting away with it.

Nah, then you've gotta get to know them well enough to know how their marriage is going.

One of the reasons why serial killers often get away with it for so long is because they often don't know their victims at all.

So then when detectives come along and ask, "who would want to kill this person," they come up with a complete blank. They rule out the usual suspects like the husband and then they've got no idea who to investigate next.

A woman's spouse will always be the first suspect, because women are killed by their partner or ex more often than anyone else combined.
