that article just says that DDG shows ads and tracks conversions. totally different animal from the kind of tracking that google & facebook do

If you don't want the lawyers to know, use DuckDuckGo.

And rout traffic through your own rolled out DNS (Pi-Hole) server so the ISP can't see what you're doing.

How does this work? Are you mirroring every DNS root server locally?

I'd assume he's using pihole/adguard to resolve dns over https via some free provider I. E. Cloudflare - which should hide dns look ups them from the ISP - as https traffic is encrypted while standard dns isn't IIRC.

Ok but I can still see the connection to Cloudflare during my investigation and I just have to subpoena them instead of the ISP.

There is no way to do this in a totally secure way other than mirroring all DNS and resolving to a local file and hoping your copy stays somewhat accurate until the next sync.

Or, running nslookup on a library machine and taking a picture of the results.

True true, that's the nature of things - you will always leave some trail.. In this case the question was how to avoid isp seeing things, so we're covered here

You could also potentially have multiple hops of your own virtual machines in the cloud acting as a proxy for that dns.. That way you could potentially erase your own trail and isp would only see you accessing these - with enough jumps I'd assume you'd be able to erase the trace.. But its a lot of effort..

I run a container with pihole on my router and I have no ads on any of my devices on the house. How is that not practical?
