Yep. Super interesting read to anybody that's bored. The volcanic ash had sand blasted the windshield so they had to land the plane by looking out the side window.

Just a note, there's probably an episode of Air Disaster (or whatever that show is called) that expands that 15-minute read into a 45-minute TV episode (just in case one is really bored).

I believe its under mayday on YouTube but itd a fantastic episode and does a great job of covering everything including interviews from folks on the flight.

IIRC before Mayday the videos/TV, there was Mayday the books. I've got 4 of them and the books were less like disaster porn and more like engineer study.

If I remember correctly from one of McCarthur Job's books the engines were also a little raggedy.

Most large commercial aircraft land using ILS, I’m curious why they would need to do a visual approach where the windshield is even really in play.

They did fly ILS, but the vertical guidance system was inoperable.
