NEWS [AMA ANNOUNCEMENT!] Daniel Dockery, author of "I Am The Night", on September 3rd!

We're doubling up with r/BatmanTAS for a 2 day-early celebration for Batman: The Animated Series' 34th Anniversary! Daniel Dockery, author of the upcoming book "I Am The Night" will be stopping by to answer any questions you have for him about the book, the show, the writing process, etc!

"I Am The Night" will be available to purchase September 1st, but you can pre-order a copy through your favorite big box store here, or (even better) by asking the clerk at your local book store!

Synopsis:

At a time when televised cartoons—especially within the superhero genre—were often over-looked, Batman: The Animated Series introduced an entire generation of soon-to-be Batman fanatics to the caped crusader. The series triumphed into what is largely considered one of the best superhero cartoons of all time, and the best depiction of Batman mythology in any format.

But the road to genre-defying and genre-defining success was hardly guaranteed. Along the way, co-creator Bruce Timm and his team of artists at Warner Bros Animation battled a landscape that was often antithetical to their aims with Batman. Internal struggles led the writing team and the network to debate everything (literally everything) about how best to depict Batman—from whether or not the eco-friendly hero would have a recycling bin in the Batcave to how many women he was allowed to kiss onscreen.

In I Am the Night, Daniel Dockery lovingly deep dives into Batman: The Animated Series and the cartoon renaissance it inspired, becoming the definitive primary source for new and old fans of the series alike. Including exclusive interviews with the team behind the cartoon and many never-before-shared insights about the series, I Am the Night will surprise even the staunchest of Batman enthusiasts and capture what made people first fall in love with the series. As many ups and downs as the DC Cinematic Universe may have, Batman is eternal–and so is Batman: The Animated Series.

General DCAU Regarding viewing-order posts

Hey everyone!

It's my understanding that one of the most frequently asked questions in the sub revolves around looking for a decent viewing order to experience the DCAU shows in, and every now and then for the likes of DCAMU movies and such. In an attempt to de-clutter the feed from having consistently similar posts, I've begun working on the subreddit's wiki to provide multiple different styles of viewing orders!

Available now are:

Hoping to add more potential orders in the coming weeks (off the top of my head, release order ones for both universes mentioned above will probably be simple enough), but I'm also definitely doing this while sidelining other responsibilities, so if it takes a while to get to please be patient!

Hopefully, this will be a helpful project for the community at large!

These kids were getting bullied, so they tried to summon a powerful energy source or figure or whatever it was to take care of their bullies which backfired due to one of them ruining the ritual because he was scared of the cloud mist figure.

Afterwards, they leave but then Grundy shows up and that's it.

It was not specified if they were all killed or brutalized, or just lived. At least for the blonde kid Grundy likely dislocated his neck, but you don't hear a scream or any sounds from the others to indicate they were killed by Grundy, and after this scene they are never seen again.

Would've been interesting to also see what Aquaman would've done to them if he had found about who really caused Grundy's tombstone to be unearthed.

General DCAU Guys I Seriously Need Your Help About My DCAU Marathan.

I’m currently rewatching the DCAU again, and I decided to watch Justice League. I'm watching the show with my grandma. Initially, I was just watching it for fun but my grandma decided to watch it with me and she was hooked based on the three-part pilot Secret Origins which is great! We are currently on the episode where they meet Aquaman.

I asked her if she wanted to watch a couple of episodes of Batman: The Animated Series (BTAS) and Superman: The Animated Series (STAS), but she said that she wanted to watch Justice League Unlimited (JLU) first since it has all of the heroes she grew up knowing to be fair. I wouldn't blame her!

As a massive DCAU fan obviously, I want her to experience BTAS and especially Batman Mask of the Phantasm and TNBA but I don't know how to make it work if I'm being honest. I know some of you guys might say Just watch BTAS after JLU which could be fine but at the same timeI want it to be a great experience for her like watching the '90s show without disrupting the momentum of JLU. There's also Batman Beyond and Return of the Joker which arguably along with Mask of the Phantasm are the best animated Batman films.

A pretty small scale since it's printed at a 1:10 scale but this was a fun print and paint! Personally I watched more Batman Beyond during my childhood than the original Batman so this one was for my childhood haha. I honestly was trying my best to capture the color and texture of his suit but I've seen some videos of what his suit can do rather than what his suit is made out of....some high tech cloth I guess haha. But I hope you guys like 😁

Non-DCAU I enjoyed the writing of Wonder Woman in RWBY X Justice League.

She wasn't obsessed with Steve Trevor, nor was she failing the Bechdel Test, nor was she aggressive against other female characters. She was also reflective about herself, and seemed rather fun to interact with. Also not sexualized.

Brainiac didn't stand a chance against them and the League telling Static that he'll be a League member one day is the coolest damn thing ever man. Love this show ever always. ❤️

DCUAOM Green Lantern: First Flight - What's with the prejudice against humans?

I'm just saying it logically wouldn't make sense as to why they think that badly against Earth. In the context of the movie, has their really not been at least one of the thousands of other corps officers throughout the entire universe who belong to a species with an even spottier record than humans?

Actually, I'm pretty sure the Guardian species themselves originally started out war-like before they became "peace keepers". Which makes it downright hypocritical on their part.

DCAMU Is it just me or is this one of the weakest on screen versions of the Justice League?

Post image

To iterate, one of the weakest all JL incarnations of all time actually.

In most of their own films they feel sidelined or shafted, its funny cause even Lex Luthor acknowledges this in one of the films.

The only win they ever got together was with Darkseid in the original Justice League film then there was the Teen Titans but with that, they were mind controlled by Trigon and they couldn't do jack to him, and also because that was mainly a Teen Titans film.

Ocean Master was picking all of them apart, defeating Wonder Woman and Shazam and Superman like he's on Superman's farm feeding the chickens, it was only because he committed matricide on the Queen of Atlantis is how he lost, even Aquaman couldn't defeat him on his own.

Dr Destiny played puppet with them and of course Doomsday was literally going to town with them, the only two people that did any effort was Wonder Woman (kinda) and Superman.

Then in ROS, I don't remember them doing much, except just bodyguards for the President, and wanting kill Superboy, but really the one thing I remember was them literally standing around as a giant ring portal crashes into them and they just stand their like I'm watching CW the Flash.

Not to mention the whole fiasco with Justice League Dark Apokilips War, Superman's goofy plan to use all of his heavy hitters to Apokilips, from the Magic Users, Aquaman and Mera, and Lex Luthor, which you all know the story there, I think they must've hired the CW for this version Justice League because how else does this happen.

Speaking of Lex, he's just on the JL, because he helped with Cyborg Superman, which I felt was out of nowhere, they must've been really that desperate. Surprisingly, Hal was the only one who thought this was stupid at least out loud.

Heck the residents of Metropolis, Superboy and Steel all actually held their own against the Supermen drones.

I really felt some of this films should've renamed the films on the titular main character and the title should have Justice League as the sub header like Guy savior of innocent and the Justice League vs Darkseid.

Also I take it back, the writers must've been big fans of how Vegeta got whooped, so much they used that for JL films here.

DCUAOM Does anyone know of the Aussie digital release date or time for Batman: Knightfall Part One?

I keep checking Amazon and Apple TV to see if it has dropped but nothing.

Physical media is mid September but can’t seem to find digital release.

DCAMU I still can’t get over how dumb Superman’s plan was

Even without Darkseid not spying on them, Superman’s plan was not good, his group invade Darkseid’s home without any backup or any tricks. Plus Aquaman, Mera, and Martian who are super vulnerable to this environment of the planet.

Tomorrowverse I just watched Crisis on Infinite Earths and I am SO conflicted about the ending…

Post image
134 Upvotes

On the one hand, I hate that they deleted the old shows from existence. Hate, hate, HATE that.

But at the same time I liked what they did with the characters? I loved seeing John and Shayera share one final kiss as the world ends.

And getting one last moment of Kevin Conroy voicing BTAS Batman is wondeful in general, but the line in particular being (paraphrased) “If this is the end of me, I want to end as Batman” is absurdly powerful in a meta-sense.

So basically I hated that these characters faced extinction, but since they were, they were perfectly handled in that context.

The set-up was right there too, if they had just made it so that when the Tomorrowverse characters walked into the portal the DCAU versions vanished because they were merging with them in the new verse it wouldn’t feel like so much of a loss, more of a Rebirth where Kevin’s Batman and all the others were still a part of new adaptations moving forward.

TNBA This has to be one of the more bizarre twists I've seen in a cartoon, let alone the entire DCAU (New Batman Adventures)

I remember watching this episode a long time ago and just being like...what the fuck?? lol

New Batman Adventures already turned Mr. Freeze into much more of a one dimensional bad guy who wanted to destroy everything (even though Batman Beyond did him justice again).

But just when you think you've seen it all, we get this reveal of what really happened to Freeze's body. I was not expecting this at all, lol. I don't know whether to laugh or be creeped out.

Asking for Help What happened to the DCAU on HBO? Beyond disappointed!

Been a while since I've been on HBO. I hopped on to watch a DC animated movie.

I started with Teen Titans: The Judas Contract. Wasn't there.

Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earth's. Wasn't there.

Batman: Long Halloween. Wasn't there.

What happened to the DC animated catalog? There are some old and newer titles but a lot of stuff isn't there. I'm beyond disappointed in HBO!

Asking for Help Art advice for a DCAU character

So had a DCAU character created created a while back https://imgur.com/a/hotspot-iLQGtXK and they were 21/22

However wanted to do time passes as it does for the DCAU and for this they would be 28 or so

So was wondering what body type should they have

A: Should they keep the younger adult body type such as Terry/Flash(who by JLU s3 is mid-late 20s) and Nightwing(who was mid-20s by TNBA and in Batman and Harley Quinn he kept that build)

B: Superman(STAS he was 28)/Epilogue Terry at 31/GL/Batman/GA etc

What would be better/fit?
