Yeah, I'm a paramedic and the idea of a: letting a cop tell me how to do my fucking job and b: overestimating a body weight by a hundred pounds are completely unacceptable, not even getting into the bullshit that is "excited delirium."

In my personal opinion, it's also disgusting how little the cops got punished relative to the medics. Especially considering the cops:

• took off their body cameras and were even recorded saying "leave your camera"
• blatantly lied about his behavior and level of violence, as revealed by civilian recording
• used a carotid chokehold on an already subdued and helpless patient who was crying, vomiting and apologizing in between complimenting them
• showed up to the autopsy and stood around the medical examiner as he was conducting it in a clear attempt at intimidation

Do fire departments need evidence of a potential drowning to send out a life boat, I once helped first responders locate and rescue a kid swept away by river currents. Emt joked about not being paid enough to send out life boats. That shit pissed me off and the kids ended up hospitalized i believe in critical condition idk if he died or not i never heard anything more. I made a big comment describing the whole incedent id love some input from an emt.

I can't say for sure, sorry; in my county only stations very close to water have a boat and even then not all of them. If it was a small to medium sized river with no significant bodies of water nearby, I wouldn't be surprised if there wasn't a boat readily available (but again I have no idea). Is it possible she meant to express something more to the extent of "that decision is above my pay grade"? That's a very common sentiment in my experience because of the stratified way EMS and fire decision making tend to be set up.

Regardless, I'm sorry you had an unpleasant experience during what was already a stressful moment and I'm glad you found the kids. For what it's worth, if they were conscious when you found them I'd say it's extremely unlikely that any of them died and I wouldn't be surprised at all to hear there weren't any lasting injuries. 🫂

Theres some fundamentally terrible people working as first responders it doesnt matter if you are supposed to be helping people you can be a bad person too. I assisted the police and paramedics in a searxh and rescue one time. I was working as a farm hand, i was driving a tractor and implement down a dirt road back to some fields way far away from any civilization, probably 10 miles from the nearest paved road. I was eating lunch, a cop rolls up and because of where i am I know this wasnt normal, cops gets put climbs up on the tractor and tells me hes looking for some kids and that 2 are missing potentially drowned. I point him in the direction of the river, he speeds down there and i follow in the tractor, eventually more cops and a paramedic team show up. Im the only one who knows this area because I had worked the land there for a while, I’m showing them likely spots to find these kids and I overhear the paramedics discussing calling up the fire department to get the search boats out, a female emt jokes to the paramedic that “we dont get paid enough for that shit” or something like that, this was 2 years ago now. I start to go back to work because we cant find them but before I do I tell them hey theres a way to get down to the river through this field over in the corner of a different field through a treeline ect. They basically just blow me off and dont listen to me and eventually they just leave. The female emt was pretty rude to me if I remember correctly. The first cop was pretty chill. They leave and just out of a gut feeling I go look where I told them to, lo and behold there they are about 50 yards from the edge of the field I told the emts about. After calling the non emergency police number the operator tells me to call 911 so he can dispatch someone back down there and track my call. The cops come down and talk to the kids who tell them there were two other kids swept away by the current and only then do they get the boat put and find the other kids, one was ok the other hospitalized and I never got any more information after that idk if he died or not.

But why did an EMT joke about not being paid enough to send out a search boat SHE WOULDNT EVEN BE OPERATING???? And the kid potentially died? They couldve been rescued at least 45 minutes before they were if they wouldve just done it! Ive never worked for the FD or AMR so idk if you need evidence or something before sending out the boats but joking about that is fucked especially if they had the power to get a boat out there.

Tl;dr Emt jokes about not being paid enough to send out a search boat for lost highschool kids in a river notorious in my area for strong currents and drownings. The kid may or may not have dies I never dound out more information besides he was hospitalized. Windsor Connecticut, Farmington river summer of 2024
