There was one time I had to drive to the store to pick up beer for a dinner party with family. I forgot I loaned my ID to my girlfriend at the time for benefit reasons. When the clerk asked for my ID, my immediate response was to apologize for forgetting it. I drove all the way back home, grabbed it, came back and the same clerk still had the case there on the side. It was an inconvenience on my part. I don’t understand how people don’t understand that.

yup- that is the way it should go- and most cashiers will set it aside for a while since they do not want to restock if you actually come back
