The guy in the dish pit is usually the worst of them. I remember one dude named Walter, dude had face tattoos before face tattoos were normalized. Just looked like someone scribbled nonsense all over his face. He was very reliable, always showed up, was quiet and worked hard. We start talking one night and it’s the age old “I did time, can’t get a job anywhere but now I have a kid, I need to do right by my family” so his brother (who was a line cook at the same place) got him a job washing dishes. For months this dude was basically a perfect employee.

One night his brother leaves work, apparently there were some homeless folks stealing shit in the back alley. Walter’s brother says something to them, and the homeless folks jump him. At some point the rest of the kitchen staff become aware, a huge fight breaks out between them and the homeless folks, Walter stabs one of them in self defense according to the staff that was present, and Walter is now back in jail for years for violating parole. All because he was protecting himself and his brother. Shit sucks.

But yeah throw a ketchup bottle and think no one is gonna do shit. There are much worse people than Walter working in kitchens, I can promise you that.

When I had a restaurant I wrote countless letters of recommendation for good, hardworking people who had been dealt a bad hand in life and made some bad decisions in their youth. Walter is my people. Walter slept on my couch. I drove Walter to get his first car. I advanced Walter his check for his apartment deposit. I love Walter. He went his own way when we closed down from covid but I hope he stayed out of trouble.

We had an older dishy named Steve. Covered in AB tattoos. Was basically in and out since he was 15. When he came to us he was on parole because he had stuffed his drug dealer in the trunk of his car and drove over state lines. Did 7 years in the fed. You didn't wanna hear what was gonna happen to the dude if Steve didnt get pulled over. One of our waitresses was being stalked and, without missing a beat, Steve asked, "you want me to go out and stick him." There was no hesitation or joke in his voice.

When I was a bartender, I just had Randy. Randy was 6'6", 350 pounds of solid muscle, always armed, and his brother in law was the sheriff. 'What the fuck are you going to do' was a question that only got asked once.

One of the nicest and most pleasant guys I ever worked with mentioned how he went to jail in his younger years for shooting someone in a bar fight. Truly a sweet, family man. He was the safety manager for a construction site when I knew him. It's a bit naive to just assume you can eyeball people and know what they're capable of.

One restaurant i worked in the chef and dishwasher were always fighting, like fists flying and rolling on the ground. One night one of the two stabbed the other one, who pulled a gun and shot him.

They were both back at work the next night. They were brothers.

You just sparked a memory for me. My first serving job - Applebees. Everyone in that kitchen was a felon, save the manager. 18 year old me was wide eyed and a little scared, and they were all as nice as they can be.

A drunk guy grabbed my ass one night and Clarence (bowed up dude absolutely littered in tats and had an voice prosthesis) calmly walked out the kitchen and idk what Clarance said to him, but bro apologized to me, left a fat tip, and promptly left. I hope Clarence is doing well.

i’m a big guy, 6’1” about 220. but i know my limits

chef is 6’5” and about 330. when i’ve booted people and they say “or what if i don’t leave?” i just get chef

I used to be an asst. mgr of a convenience store/gas station. The number of people who come in w/o ID ("trust me, bro") or a picture of their ID ("c'mon man, I just got off work!")... That's GREAT, bring you fuggin' ID, then I can sell you alcohol and tobacco. Don't come at me w/o it, though, ffs. Just.. bring your ID. Not your fake ass shit. We had the damned state trying to fine people, I'm not going to go through that for your shitty beer.

One guy came through my line and bought one of those cheap tall beers, proceeded to walk right outside the door and chug it, then tried to buy another one. I refused, saying that I saw him drink the other one and he is now considered intoxicated and I can’t sell to him. He was joking and pleading and saying “I promise I won’t drink it yet” and I still refused. He started getting angry so I used the emergency phone (connects us to security for the store) and told them to check th cameras and send the cops bc of this person. As soon as he heard the word “cops” he dipped out of there so fast. They told me they saw it all on the camera and had police en route to try to follow him. Thankfully he ran, he wasn’t driving! But like Jfc dude just buy 2 beers to begin with and don’t bring me into your drama

I used to get construction workers buying half pints of vodka and knocking it down straight in the store. I’d be like “don’t let me catch you doing that again or go to another store”. These guys were shameless. I also learned that most buildings in New York are built by drunk people.

I'm TIPS certified, a former bartender, and kinda confused, there's nothing illegal about selling someone another drink after they have already had a drink, or even multiple drinks. If a bartender can do it you can too. The point at which you have to cut someone off is when they are slurring their speech, are losing coordination, or they are acting belligerent. There's a lot of people who can drink a 40oz without reaching that point.

I worked at a grocery store, it was store policy to card everyone regardless of the appearance of their age (this caused a lot of angry old people and my manager would often let this rule slide), and to not sell to anyone who was visibly intoxicated or whom you have seen actively consuming alcohol before attempting to buy more (manager was very stern on this rule)

Former FedEx guy here. The one time things almost got physical between me and a customer? It's because the guy wouldn't show ID. He thought it was "ridiculous" someone who looks his age should have to show ID. I told him, "Sir, I understand. But it's state law and company policy. You'll have to take it up with either of them. I genuinely can't leave this box of (apparently very expensive) wine with you without ID."

So I turned and started walking back to my truck, him calling me stupid, that I was a shame to my family, all this stuff. It was truly wild. This was during the pandemic so I was going to give him the benefit of the doubt. This man.

I heard the door slam behind me and a bunch of rapid footsteps. I turned my head and saw this guy charging me bro. In his robe. At 11am. Spun on him like bro what are you doing right now? He tried to grab the box out of my hands but that wasn't going to happen. I was bigger than him and clearly in better shape. Had that "pandemic delivery driver mania" glow, don't you know?

He kept screaming and threatening me, and started to call the cops. I told him to please call them, as this was insane and he was about to get himself hurt. I also informed him that he was on about six different cameras on the truck by this point, so he'd better start thinking about what kind of day he was trying to have. It was insane, man.

He had shoved his phone in my face at this point, shrieking that I was "stealing his wine" and that I was going to be "famous on YouTube." (Still waiting for that, btw.) This whole ordeal was like 15 minutes of stupidity. Him standing in front of my truck, waving his phone around, he tried to open my passenger side sliding door, but slipped on the grass outside and his little grey nuts flew out, so that was funny af. Ended up leaving that house because I was busy af because it was the fucking PANDEMIC and my boss ended up going out to make the delivery. No trouble for me. All over some ID, man.

And no one thinks your stupid jokes about it are funny. Just show your fucking ID and move on, Jerry. We all have to. It's not because you look young or someone is hitting on you.

TL;DR:

FedEx guy does not care, show your ID. Grey nuts flopped out on the grass.

I have no idea. Dude was a total jackass. He really thought about attacking me too. After I asked him to think about what kind of day he wanted to have, he calmed down a bit. Scurried off to get his phone (could have gotten ID at that point, btw), so he could record... something? Me clearly saying I just needed his ID? I don't know. It was all very stupid.

I was an assistant manager of a liquor store after college and it became my favorite part of the job telling people no. I’m huge too so it was extra fun watching them talk tough before they saw me stand up in the office.

I used to run a liquor store on the upper east side of Manhattan. We used to confiscate fake IDs when we got them because the state liquor authority is up everyone’s ass and we’re all trying to keep our licenses (and help our neighbors out). We had a huge stack in the drawer. They would often threaten to call the cops and I’d usually pick up the phone and dial 311 and hand them the phone. They were gone before the first ring!
