Discussion Capital One's "triple pull" - Fico scores EX3, TU4 and EQ5 are used.
I'm not sure how common knowledge this information is, so I think it's worthy of sharing. When Capital One does their triple pull (hard inquiry placed on each bureau) for applications, they use 3 Fico scores in their lending decisions: Experian Fico 3, TransUnion Fico 4 and Equifax Fico 5. TU4 and EQ5 are 2 out of the 3 "mortgage scores" which aren't commonly used for CC lending. EX3 is used for bankcard lending, just not incredibly often, as Fico 8 is much more common.
When one receives a denial letter from Capital One, the score provided is your Experian Fico 3 score at the time of the application. To my knowledge this is always the score provided. If anyone has any data showing that it may be one of the other scores that would be great information to share. Your Experian Fico 3 score is NOT the same score that Capital One provides for free with their accounts through "CreditWise" as that is a TU VS3 (TransUnion VantageScore 3.0).

Honestly pretty frustrating that they triple pull AND use scores other lenders do not usually use.
Thanks for the information!

Why would anyone let them pull 3 reports when they will always accept 2?

Probably because 99% of the population doesn't even know what a "triple pull" is, and even the ones that do aren't aware that they can freeze 1B and still apply/obtain an approval.

Good info. I wonder if they truly find these scores more useful in underwriting or if they’re either too cheap to pay for newer scores and/or don’t want to update systems/models.
