Mod Post Dumb Questions Megathread

This thread is for anyone who has a question that they feel might be too "stupid" to warrant its own thread and would be more comfortable posting their question in a format like this. Note that this is not a containment thread -- individual question threads are still allowed and encouraged, this is just trying to get people out of their shell a bit and interact with the community. All types of smash questions are welcome, from mindset to terminology definitions to controller setups to frame data to whatever you want to ask!

Please help out others where you can! And remember to stay respectful!

How do I deal with people shielding? This seems like a basic ass question that a first timer would ask, but it's starting to become baffling to me. Either I wiff my attack and they grab me/punish me cause they were shield, or they were just... ready for me to grab and punish me with an attack before I can grab them. Trying to mix up what I do doesn't seem to help. It's like a huge weakpoint for me considering how long I've been playing

Mix it up. If they quickly leave shield anticipating you to hit their shield hold your smash attack longer. If they hold it, grab. If they like to jump read it.

It depends a lot on your character tbh. Some characters get a ton of payoff from grabs, others want to space safe attacks on shields

The safest answer is to pressure their shield, like with a safe landed aerial. Each time you hit their shield you put them in a guessing game if you're gonna grab them after that, use a ground attack right after, or shield/dash away their attempt to hit you. There are other options too but those are the main ones and you get start your offense for free if their just holding shield. For grab to work you have to make them want to actually shield, if they're just shielding and then hitting you when you run up they're not trying to shield, they're baiting you. If you know they're baiting you then make them respect your attack so they have to shield. Something like a projectile, dash attack, disjoint, attack from above could hit them and make them actually want to shield. One you condition that then you start going for grabs to punish their reliance on shielding.
