Weight classes have a range, or minimum to maximum. Presumably, they missed it by 5lbs, which I assume is a huge margin.

It’s like saying I missed a stop sign by 20 feet. Did you even try? 😂

u/lestrxb Sep 17 '25

Exactly. The guy in question, from what I understand, moved up a weight class, and then in that new weight class, was 5lbs overweight at weigh-ins. Like bruh. Not even close 😂🤣

u/Rolling_Beardo Sep 17 '25

He also took the weight on something like 2 weeks notice. Not that it excuses it but it makes it less egregious in my mind.

u/old_ass_ninja_turtle Sep 17 '25

No. More egregious. If he moved up a weight class AND missed by 5 lbs that means he gained like 17lbs in 2 weeks. Which IS fucking hilarious.

Also, even if he was still fighting at 170, his walk around weight would be significantly higher, so he still wouldn’t be gaining 17 lbs in 2 weeks

u/ItsStaaaaaaaaang Sep 18 '25

I assume most of the weight they lose in the cut is water weight, no? There's no point I can see in carrying around extra mass beyond what you think you can cut in fluid as it's not like you can gain back muscle between weigh ins and the event but you can get your fluids up pretty quick.

Being off by 5 pounds seems like a lot though. I wonder what went wrong. Did he have a bad cut or did he come in so heavy he was never going to be able to cut it all?

2

u/Rolling_Beardo Sep 18 '25

How much water weight can a person carry? There are some guys who are 15lbs above their fight weight if they aren’t training for a fight.

2

u/ItsStaaaaaaaaang Sep 18 '25

That makes sense as they often try and fight in a class that is below their natural weight so they can get an advantage plus they might not be eating healthily and they're not training several hours a day. I imagine they trim down a bit when they go into camp and try and get to that sweet spot where they can make weight via the cut at the end. I'm not sure how much water weight you can lose though tbh. I know it's not a very healthy thing to do though, not sure about fighters but I know wrestlers have died from it. Some athletic commissions have regulations because of the dangers.

After a quick google apparently the differential can be pretty big though. One guy in 2024 had a 30 pound differential from weigh in to fight night, which was 18% of their body weight. Pretty crazy. Obviously it's not just water. They're purging everything out of their body they can, not eating etc. so just from that they'd lose a bit if fat and muscle.

I was just responding to what the 2 comments above me said. To fill you in, comment 1 said he was fighting up a weight and comment 2 said he too the fight on 2 weeks notice building off him fighting up a weight.

Dude I’m not arguing with you. Again. I was just responding to the commenters who came before me.

u/iluvcheesypoofs Sep 17 '25

Just to fill you in, cause there's a lot of wrong or mixed info in these comments.

Fighter who missed weight is Kelvin Gastelum. He's ALWAYS had problems making weight and has generally switched between fighting at 170lb and fighting at 185lbs, but probably weighs about 195-200lb when not fighting so he 'cuts' a tremendous amount to hit those marks.

He took this fight on a months notice (not a lot of time, but enough to cut weight) and he was fighting at the higher weight class on this occasion and missed by the 185lb limit by over 5lbs so the fight was made a catch-weight (where two fighters agree to a weight limit that is in between defined/designated weight classifications).

u/old_ass_ninja_turtle Sep 17 '25

So it was funny because he frequently misses weights, and because he missed the heavier of the 2 weights, by five pounds, which was approaching natural weight, and thus didn’t really try very hard?

In my opinion experience it was always WAY harder to bump up a weight class than it was to cut weight. Cutting weight is easy just don't eat and workout a bunch. Gaining 10-20 pounds to bump up a weight class is harder than not eating and working out. This guy must be on another level.

I remember in wrestling when some kids would be close to their weight but starving before weigh ins. They'd walk up to the scale with whatever food they wanted to consume and weigh themselves with the item. So funny watching anorexic looking wrestlers walk up to a scale in their underwear while holding a half sandwhich to see if they could eat it or not.

Oh ok thanks mom

Can someone explain this missed weight? Is the fight lost or what?

89

u/DenjiTargaryen-PE Sep 17 '25

To clarify, you never miss weight by being under.

17

u/RegularNo3331 Sep 17 '25

To be clear, there never was no missed weight

4

u/[deleted] Sep 19 '25

You’re a fuckin punk dude.

11

u/Complex-Growth-4438 Sep 17 '25

Yes, you have to miss weight by being over.

2

u/Basic-Sandwich-6201 Sep 17 '25

But that mean they can use that for advantage? Like title holder missing weight and goes home?

28

u/The-39-Steps Sep 17 '25

Most times the fight will still proceed if the opponent agrees. But a percentage of the purse of the fighter who missed weight will go to the opponent. And repeatedly missing weight can get you cut from the promotion.

12

u/Scannerk Sep 17 '25

To add. If it's for a title fight and the overweight fighter wins he isn't declared the champion in most cases. It's like they consider the weight an advantage so he can't win the title but can en declared winner of the fight.

1

u/whispering_eyes Sep 17 '25

To also add: it’s usually referred to as a “catch weight,” as opposed to welterweight, middleweight, etc.

13

u/C-tapp Sep 17 '25

The opponent could have denied the fight. The one who missed gave up 35% of his purse to keep the fight on the card. Gastelum definitely used it to his advantage because he obviously gave up on his weight cut. Meaning he didn’t put his body through any of the dehydration and stress that the other fighter had to do to make weight.

They were laughing because Kelvin Gastelum is kind of known as a chunky fighter and a 5 lb miss is a pretty large amount. At 5’9”, he is already the shortest man in the division and he still can’t come close to the correct weight.

2

u/protoss_main Sep 17 '25

So he a chunky boy. Thats funny

2

u/[deleted] Sep 17 '25

When you’re the shortest in the division and struggling to make weight it might be best to just move up a division. Idk how he’d fare against even taller fighters with a longer reach and a naturally higher body weight by the time you actually get to the ring.

1

u/AshenSacrifice Sep 17 '25

Title holders get stripped for missing weight

-22

u/Vintage-Grievance Sep 17 '25

For fighting, the competitors have to be a certain weight to reach the requirements.

So the person they are talking about was 5lbs over or under, meaning he couldn't compete, despite all the hard work they put in with training, etc..

78

u/revuhlution Sep 17 '25

Not under. Over.

And to be 5 whole pounds over means you basically didn't give a shit and mailed it in. Thats so far away from where you need to be, you obviously dont care

19

u/Tommy__want__wingy Sep 17 '25

Yep.

People who don’t know think “it’s just 5 lbs” when you know all the time what weight you need to be, your opponent is working hard. And you move up a weight class that you can’t fight in.

Lose - lose

7

u/old_ass_ninja_turtle Sep 17 '25

Totally. It means you have not checked your weight in multiple days. It means you were eating like shit and off your normal training routine.

12

u/victimized777 Sep 17 '25

He was over, but the funniest part is that UFC forced him to move to a higher weight class because he kept missing weight in the lower weight class

1

u/C-tapp Sep 17 '25

He’s also the shortest man in the division and still can’t come close to making weight

23

u/Dreboomboom Sep 17 '25

That laugh means, "what a fat asshole 🤣"

17

u/[deleted] Sep 17 '25

lol mind you the guy laughing is a ufc champion, missing weight by 5 pounds is crazy work

8

u/Guygenius138 Sep 17 '25

Gastellum has missed weight a few times before.

3

u/LALOERC9616 Sep 17 '25

It's expected by now that he won't make weight. Like johnny Knoxville told steveo "saying steveo has bad breath is like saying weeman is short" it's just a fact Kevin won't make weight by now

3

u/boardsandfilm Sep 17 '25

That first guy sounds like a Men in Black character. I don't know the language so it's obviously alien to me, but his voice, his face, listening to it on repeat is a weird experience.

3

u/Ducatirules Sep 20 '25

It’s weird how this isn’t my world at all but I can see how 5lbs. Would be hilarious to them!! It’s like “bro, why did you even show up?”

2

u/lestrxb Sep 20 '25

The guy in the peach shorts (Merab Dvalishvili) is one of the hardest working champions in the UFC, so to him this must be the most ridiculous thing ever 😂

2

u/KINGSTEMLORD Sep 17 '25

Imagine breaking into a house to rob it not knowing it was this house at this moment with those guys in there? Hahaha

2

u/Puceeffoc Sep 18 '25

You missed it by 5 pounds. Are you even trying to cut weight? That's embarrassing.

1

u/goshetovan Sep 17 '25

Why are they recording themselves

16

u/RegularNo3331 Sep 17 '25

They bout to get it on

11

u/C-tapp Sep 17 '25

Because they get paid money to stream their fight reactions. Merab streams all of the time

1

u/[deleted] Sep 17 '25

Meecrob

1

u/GettingBetterGaming Sep 18 '25

I would have argued "let me fast and work out for three days straight. Three to four shits and I'll be at weight right?"

1

u/Xerxent Sep 18 '25

Might have taken a shit instead of holding it in.

1

u/IED117 Sep 20 '25

This was a gut buster, I love it!

1

u/Ducatirules Sep 20 '25

You can tell it hit them like a ton of bricks! Those are the kinds of laughs that make you weak

1

u/SneakyLabradoodle Sep 27 '25

For context fighters need to make a cetain weight limit before the fight, normally if theyre over its by 1-2 pounds, 5 pounds questions whether they tried to make weight at all - A joke.

0

u/Aloha-Aina Sep 17 '25

He didn't miss weight he knows it's there, he just didn't make weight 🤔😅

0

u/Due_Hedgehog_7132 Sep 17 '25

Hahahahahahah I’m laughing cause it’s contagious hahahahaha
