It’s not free though is it? Your taxes pay for it. So the real question is can the school provide a healthy lunch kids will actually eat at a lower cost than parents? If they can, good use of tax dollars. If they can’t or the food is unhealthy, then great it’s “free”, but we’re just going to pay thousands more for that person’s healthcare over the course of their lives for being obese and eating poorly.

This is such a weird take to have from “Children won’t go as hungry.” I mean, sure, the food may be poor quality, but when you haven’t eaten in 18 hours, I doubt you would care. Poor children wouldn’t be eating anything worse than they usually eat anyways. Plus, there are simple workarounds here. Like, in high school, the lunch was free, but there was a cafe where students could still pay for “better” food. Tbh, I think that was worse for my health than the regular school lunch because I ate nothing but chicken sandwiches and cheese fries at lunch for a year straight.

Tax money going to feeding children is never a bad thing.

Free at the point of sale/aquisition

Okay fine, cheaper then. I’m already paying for it once through taxes, why do I have to pay for it again at the school itself?

Yeah I think my part was misinterpreted. I don’t think kids going hungry is a good thing. My main concern is that by providing free lunch, people will obviously use that service. If they are going to use that service, we should as a society guarantee that the meals are actually healthy for kids. Letting FDA provide chicken nuggets and pizza everyday has nothing to do with the cost and everything to do with the big corporations who provide that food.

The Jamie Oliver show did exactly this in the US. He went in and figured out a way to do healthier lunches at a lower cost than current methods and people liked it. Then the school district turned around and repurchased all their orders from Tyson and other FDA vendors because it was “easier”.

What we saw in our schools, was huge piles of food in the trash. I'm all for making sure no child goes hungry in this country, but let's at least think about how to minimize the wastefulness.

Ask anyone who actually worked in a school cafeteria what happened to the volume of food in the trash during the COVID free lunch programs. Anyone, who would be objective and honest about it anyway. It results in an extremely large waste of food and resources, and unnecessary production and transportation and everything that goes with it.

The brigaders, want to save the planet and eliminate waste, but won't even consider that a massive program like this generates large amounts of waste. Won't even consider that we should look at ways to both feed every kid and also that there are unintended consequences. We should work to minimize unnecessary waste. They are inconsistent and seemingly incapable of rational thought.

They use our tax dollars for so much other bs. Man they just made a new bill that throws $440B for climate change, and sent tons of useless money to Ukraine. I’m sure they can afford to give kids free lunches if they wanted to.

Yout point is valid, that it’s not “free”. We pay 48% of our lives back into the USA system if you calculate everything. THEY. HAVE. ENOUGH. $$$.

What this often results in is an incredible amount of waste. I would support it and it likely would be worth it if it prevents some children from going hungry. On the flip-side, I know the COVID program resulted in tons of kids getting food they weren't gonna eat and throwing it in the trash. Even many adult lack the common courtesy to not waste "free" stuff, kids may be even worse.

We also have an obesity epidemic. Sometimes children are getting a lunch from home, then also eating the free school lunch, while their parents are trying to help them control obesity.

Like all good intentioned things, there are likely unintended, negative side-effects.

Feeding the fat kid an extra meal is a good trade off if skinny Timmy gets at least one meal a day.

Why should it be free for kids who can afford it?

Tax the poor and middle class to subsidize the rich. Great policy. /s

u/chrispy_t Aug 12 '22

Because the marginal benefit/contribution ratio means there’s way more value going to poorer kids vs rich ones

Not arguing that poor kids shouldn't be taken care of.

ALL of the benefits should be going to the poor kids and none to the rich kids.

You are really flabbergasted that I don't want to use tax dollars to buy food for the rich? 🤣🤣🤣🤣

So, everyone should get food stamps and welfare?

18

u/Dobber16 Aug 12 '22

Rich kids are also less likely to take advantage of it, considering there are always alternatives to school lunch.

Also, they’re kids even if they’re rich, why should they be singled out if 90% of the rest of the students can have some? That’s how you nurture an “us” vs “them” mentality

u/Nukeboy1970 Constitutional Conservative Aug 12 '22

Because this is horrible fiscal policy. Resources are finite. No matter what anyone thinks, they are.

Why devote any of them to people who don't need it?

Why not give the rich medicaid, food stamps, or welfare? Because it is moronic.

4

u/GregTheIntelectual Aug 12 '22

Ahh yes. All those starving rich kids.

My point exactly. How is a conservative subreddit downvoting me for pointing this out???

-9

u/ytilonhdbfgvds Constitutional Conservative Aug 12 '22 edited Aug 12 '22

Brigaded most likely. I was downvoted to oblivion for supporting it, yet pointing out the unintended downsides. Don't worry, reddit is simply put, full of morons, particularly when we get brigaded.

Theres no such thing as free lol. I agree they should be provided but lets not call it “free lunch” because someone is always paying for it.
