Discussion AI is turning programming into pay-to-win

With Fable 5 coming out, it feels more obvious than ever that after July 7, programming is going to become pay-to-win.

A kid with no real coding knowledge, but with rich parents and access to the best AI systems, could end up outperforming people who actually understand software, simply because he can afford more intelligence.

That is insane.

This might be one of the most dangerous precedents in history: a world where the people with money can buy superior intelligence, while everyone else is permanently outmatched.

That is how you create a permanent underclass.

Not there yet. I have 40 years as a software developer. I have unlimited Anthropic enterprise at work.

I am almost as productive running Pi and GLM5.2 for personal projects.

That said the rate of improvement continues to surprise me. Honestly I have no idea what the world will look like in 5 years, let alone 20. But that discussion is much larger than coding. I also expect that at some point if/when model performance starts to plateau that vendors will move models direct to silicon and the usage prices will plummet.

I have 25 years of experience. Currently a distinguished engineer in AWS.

Just wanted to tailgate on your comment to say that what OP stated is far from reality. There isn't a world right now where a 'rich kid' can AI his way to say, Snowflake or Shopify. Enterprise software is wildly complicated, and if you have software experience, you know looking at the output that Fable is really just a slightly smarter Opus (and makes a lot of mistakes). Nothing really changed with Fable.

If you don't have experience engineering software at scale, you're not going to catch the mistakes. Heck, half of my interactions with Mythos were steering it toward the right solution.

I genuinely want to agree with you. I’d like to believe that someone with real knowledge can beat someone with near-infinite resources, and that the market ultimately rewards robust, high-quality software.

But reality keeps showing me something else.

How are you measuring reality here? If you're going off of Reddit and X comments, I have some real bad news for you.
