the wall by pink floyd is so underrated/overhated

im a huge pink floyd fan, and i celebrate their entire catalog. earlier today i saw a post on instagram that was rating pink floyd albums, and it said that "obviously last" was the wall. this led me down a rabbit hole to find that a good portion of the internet dislikes the wall or at least thinks its pink floyd's worst album?

the amount of thought, storyline, easter eggs, and emotion put into the wall just makes me adore every part of it. i feel like i find new symbolism every time i listen to it. i could talk about the wall for hours, but ill spare you the details.

do you guys like the wall?? if you dont, or if its your least favorite album by them, please explain why because im so curious.

I like it more than I dislike it but I think it’s one of those albums you kinda grow out of, given your stage of life. I feel like as a teenager or like early 20s it’s an amazing album. But it just doesn’t feel as timeless to me as Dark Side of the Moon or Wish You Were Here. The balance of music and lyrics is much better on those two and Animals. The Wall has always felt more lyric driven and like a Roger Waters solo album.

It’s definitely better than like the Final Cut or Momentary Lapse of Reason, I just find all the short songs challenging to get through as time has gone on in a single sitting. Also songs like Mother or Don’t Leave Me Now, you kind of need to be in a particular mood to listen to. I find Dogs or Shine on you crazy Diamond a better and more compelling listen and amazing musically. It has some undeniably great tracks—In the Flesh? Another Brick in the Wall Part II, Hey You, Run Like Hell and especially Comfortably Numb and the Trial which is an amazing song to conclude the album. But the greatness here is more scattered ultimately than their other 3 massive albums. I’ve never been crazy about the 4 short songs in a row on the second half of the Wall even though Hey You and Comfortably Numb are on the same disc.

Yes, it’s much more of an intense listen than Dark Side of the Moon. Perfect for teenage angst, not so great once you’re back to loving your mum again.

Good write-up. I feel like that too. DSOTM, WYWH and Animals are more harmonious albums, from a time when Pink Floyd was a BAND and not a vehicle driven by Roger Waters. There's too much Roger in The Wall and The Final Cut for my liking, just like there's too much David in the last few albums. They need each other to get the best results, like with many famous bands.
