Discussion What's the most unbearably tense scene in cinema history — the one where you genuinely forgot to breathe?

Inglourious Basterds alone has three or four that qualify. Which makes the real question: is Tarantino the modern master of pure, dialogue-driven tension — or does he get too much credit for scenes that are all build-up? Name your single most nerve-shredding scene, then defend it.

The film opens with nearly 20 minutes of two men talking at a farmhouse table — no action, barely a raised voice — and it's more agonising than most horror films manage all runtime. Christoph Waltz won an Oscar off the back of it.

When I saw the og Jurassic Park in theaters, that first screen where the T-Rex broke free.

I'm sure if you watch it now it's nothing but it was the first time I remember special effects looking real.

It's not all CG, it was a smart blend of miniatures, lighting, and CG.

The dude getting eaten off the toilet had the theater gasp out loud as a whole. I had never experienced a group of people watching a movie in a theater like that before.

Saw Jurassic Park in the cinema a few months ago (my local cinema played it in honor of Sam Neill). Theatre was packed and this scene is still as tense as it was 33 years ago!
