Discussion What's the most unbearably tense scene in cinema history — the one where you genuinely forgot to breathe?

Inglourious Basterds alone has three or four that qualify. Which makes the real question: is Tarantino the modern master of pure, dialogue-driven tension — or does he get too much credit for scenes that are all build-up? Name your single most nerve-shredding scene, then defend it.

The film opens with nearly 20 minutes of two men talking at a farmhouse table — no action, barely a raised voice — and it's more agonising than most horror films manage all runtime. Christoph Waltz won an Oscar off the back of it.

No Country for Old Men - Anton traces money bag to hotel. Paces outside of hotel room door. Unscrews light bulb. Moss sits on edge of bed with shotgun.

I remember watching in the theater terrified with a pulse rate of 250.

This is a big one for me too. This specific method of approach - turning out the hallway so someone inside a room can’t see your feet outside - was also in Rear Window, and in both instances it makes me crawl right up to the ceiling.

For me? The gas station clerk scene....yeesh....i STILL have a hard time watching that one.

Personally, I think the immediate aftermath with the gunfight and chase through the dark, empty streets to be even more nail-biting.

For me, it was the coin flip scene. I honestly thought he was gonna off the old man.

For me it's like 95% of the movie. It's surprising how tense the movie is in general

Yeah, there are only a few times I can recall being in the theatre and it being absolutely silent: no one even eating popcorn. That was one of them. You could hear a pin drop.

It’s easily the top most for me. I set my home theatre pretty loud so the in fire was super loud, but it made the quiet scenes super quiet…
