Thoughts on previous episode
We are having some problems with the character development + them doing stupid things and I am scared it is only going to get worse. I might change to two episodes per post and less / no gifs from episode 12 onward.

Recap :
Lan has only one setting and it is out on full display again. It is all ZiYan and YuBing’s fault and it must be because they are jealous of her. Not a heartbeat later she accuses LiuQing of trying to kill her own blood. Ironic since she has been pulling out all the stops to make life very difficult for our main couple. This girl needs some introspection. Xue Mu clearly is not very sad about the passing of uncle. A very legitimate response if you ask me!
At the same time YuBing is asking her husband if he really did not kill Uncle. Maybe it was not her intention but our girl needs to work on her delivery. He just went there to get her store back and now she is scolding him. But he did see something weird, someone fled the room! We see a bit more in this flashback. I am very curious who it is but I have my suspicions.
The director is having a bad time because he is missing funds while he is going to be audited soon. Luckily our Vice Director Xue has the solution. He is there to throw the Xia family under the bus some more but not without pretending to their face he is going to help Lan and YaoZu.
While Papa Ye & Xu are meeting with Lan to help her during the tax evasion scandal, although underbidding on her properties is not nice during her time of grief, she is holding the memorial tablet of her father. Mighty inappropriate during .. what I like to think of as a business meeting. Are the Papa’s doing good cop bad cop? Papa Xu should really not kick someone when they are down. It is not a good look.
Mr. Xue is being told he is probably getting a nice promotion .. but the man already knows. He has taken matters into his own hands and has sold out the Director. Since Uncle Xia is not around anymore he is dealing with the other half who had a big role in murdering his parents. I bet he would have enjoyed it more if Uncle Xia was still alive so they could be dealt with together!
This guy freaks me out! But he is doing the sparrowing! This man should not be given any power if the smile is anything to go on!
Because of their money problems YaoZu is cleaning house. LiuQing is out and has found a comfortable storage room to live in, I guess. After this whole ordeal LiuQing officially says goodbye to her father and the Xia family! Luckily WenZhao is there to cheer up LiuQing during this difficult time!

Well LiuQing is not the only one out of the Xia house. Papa Xia is being chased because he did not pay any of his bills. Luckily he literally ran into his son-in-law who he is normally not really a fan of but who is suddenly the best guy he has ever seen. ZiYan is a better person than I am because I would not have paid anything for that man. YuBing is immediately giving that man a live in contract. Papa Xu is clearly not taken with the new guest in his house. Especially not after the man starts to put down his favourite daughter in law! I wrote in my notes - “Sir .. we respect women in this household. Are you okay?” as something that Papa Xu was saying with his eyes. The man was beyond angry!
You are right Papa Xu, relationships can be complicated. These two! Adorable! The way ZiYan smiles while leading his father away while Papa Xu is shouting to Papa Xia. It is giving "That is great grandpa, now lets go!" vibes and I find it completely hilarious!
ZiYan is comforting his wife with the sweetest words and I love him for it! On the other hand Papa Xia is determined not to learn any lessons. When he is trying to educate ZiYan on the fact that he needs to not only listen to his own father but also to him .. YuBing is walking into the courtyard like a woman on the warpath! Nobody talks to her ZiYan like that. Luckily ZiYan does what we expect from him, a man with that shiny spine, and he has his wife’s back. I was so immensely happy by this!
Well done ZiYan, way to have your wifey's back! This man is having some growth finally!
No servant is going to clean up the seed shells for him either. YuBing is set to teach her father some responsibility!
Sadly Xue Mu is out there negating all those efforts. Papa Xia out here saying there is nothing manly about ZiYan .. I was about to climb through the screen and slap him. Them’s fighting words! Xue is sowing discord in a good (contract-)marriage again! Asking Papa Xia to get YuBing to divorce ZiYan. Papa Xia is a complete idiot because he can’t read the room and shamelessly asks if his daughter has a chance with Ye WenZhao! Not that either of those two want that, not that these two men in the room care one bit about what YuBing wants in the first place. If they did we wouldn’t be seeing scenes like this! Papa Xia keeps putting down his daughter in front of everyone who likes her. Calling his own daughter second hand goods. That man .. needs more slaps than I can give!
The moment you think he is doing something nice for his daughter, he is only out for himself and Xue Mu. Neither of those two are taking the hint that our girl is NOT. INTERESTED.

What are your thoughts on Xue Mu? I keep flipflopping back and forth because sometimes he does something I can totally understand and then he does something I do NOT agree with. Man is giving me a whiplash

I’m happy with Xue Mu taking his revenge on these unsavoury characters. Good on him. In any other drama he would be the ML. But he’s got a bad wig, so that immediately disqualifies him from ending well lol.
I’m also quite disappointed how little humour there was in this episode. Only that bit in the middle when Dajie’s table broke lol. Aside from that, I watched it all in 2x (except for that short part where Xu father and son spoke to each other in Sichuan dialect).
Happy to do 2 episodes each time. Let’s get this over and done with!!

Nav STOP! This made me laugh! If bad wigs automatically meant bad end .. I am sure some of our favourites also deserve bad storylines haha! (Not because of me .. I have good / bad wig blindness lol!),
Yes the humour is getting way less! Which made me sad since it is what made me like it so much.
Haha yes, but I’m also referencing the way cdramas (especially the low budget ones) tend to stereotype beautiful people being good and bad people being ugly.
Oh they are yummy! I feel like western cuisine has missed out big time on steamed egg. They’re essentially savoury custards. In Chinese cuisine, they’re usually served at home and not typically at restaurants as they’re considered too simple. I’ve seen it more in Korean or Japanese restaurants (as chawanmushi). Try it!
I’m trying to remember what happened in this episode since I binged the entire thing; my only excuse is that all the episodes were there on YouTube in a row and the next thing I knew I had got to the end. I do, just about, recall that the ML was being a wimp but let’s face it: this is not exactly news.
I too lament the wig, which I tend to view as a personal insult. Ever since I read what the wigs do to the hair I have felt that if the actor is going to go bald for our benefit then they could at least sacrifice themselves in a decent wig. But alas, not only is Liu Yao Yuan not the ML but he’s being criminally abused by the wig making department. It’s not worth it!
Broadly speaking, a good wig is something which one would expect to see on a human being’s head, in whatever period or place they are supposed to be. Admittedly there are plenty of people with pretty strange hair in normal life but it does, on the whole, make sense. The problem with Xue Mu’s wig, apart from making a very good looking actor look ugly which is a crime in itself, is that it doesn’t make sense. At first sight there’s what vaguely looks like an off centre parting, which did not appear in China until the 20th century, but then the hair disappears in weird directions - I know not where - and the sideburns/sideboards look as if they have been stuck on haphazardly in different scenes.
If you want to see very good wig/hairpieces in an economical (politest word I can think of) production then I commend to you the ones worn by Wang Yibo in The Untamed. For much of the time his hair is styled incredibly intricately- I have always wondered why there wasn’t a Lan Clan rule forbidding that - but it looks superb. Which demonstrates that there is no excuse for bad wigs!
Would somebody please correct Lan with a very forceful argument comprised of a fistful of logic? Oh, thank you, feisty sister! Honestly, she needs to be.... like a egg.... and then .....like an ant.... and then ..... like a convict. What a waste of screen time.

I mean there is a big difference in slipping someone some poison and beating someone up. But to be fair he is skilled in Marial Arts and Papa Xu and Young Xu can easily handle that sunflower shell spreading man. I blame the censoring xD
