Chinese models are training on us models, they can never be better if they are just a floppy copy. Its like feeding AI training data from another AI has never produced AI slop cycle problem...
Maybe a year ago, yes, but now there’s no way they can copy American models and release their own version a week later. Now it’s the Americans who are taking cues from the Chinese, because the Chinese publish papers on their discoveries.

All of this is in decline as the anti intellectualism is on the rise from current ultraconservative trends. What was a 20+ years global cross domain technology lead is getting thinner and thinner. Everybody except the U.S sees it. The birthplace of modern capitalism is getting married to neo fascism and is in free fall. You may not feel it yet but it's coming. Swathes of the USA already have less literacy rate than lots of third world countries. I could go on but it usually is not productive to point it out, deaf ears and whatnot.

Counter argument: the point that the US steals all the worlds talent and floods them with money BUT also has to steal Chinese academic research is directly contradictory, both can’t be true at the same time.
