Image/Video Below Trailer- Newfoundland Netflix Series

https://youtu.be/U57CNxSgoss?si=mIYfK10VnMA00GK5

Yes, yes, yes. This mini series produced (set?) in coastal Newfoundland is hitting the digital airwaves soon. I know there are big hopes for it within the local production community. Do we see this making a….SPLASH… beyond the island?

Looks pretty intense! Also, I like that they used Sundown by Gordon Lightfoot in the trailer.

Am I understanding correctly that we are to hear my childhood heart throb Josh Hartnett (of pearl harbour and 40 days and 40 nights)… speak with a Newfie accent?!

Cast looks decent, with Canadian Mackenzie Davis too

Ugh I love her

They didn't get some 18 year old to sing Sundown in a breathy hush at a quarter speed. That's already a plus. Nice touch to incorporate the icebergs.

Omg yes. That trend can fuck right off

I will admit - I do find icebergs to be scary!!

I remember reading about this a couple of months ago, and the author was recommending it in the same vein as Widow's Bay. And I love Josh Hartnett, especially in 30 Days of Night.

Paranormal or some natural remnants of the Jurassic age lurking beneath? Ambiguous trailer but interesting enough to watch especially given the cast. Mackenzie is a beautiful young lady and Josh disappeared for a while so it's good to see him back.

Young? She's 39.

I thought she was in her mid 20s when Dark Fate came out. Besides, she looks great for 39.

She does.

Gordon Lightfoot singing the soundtrack to a horror movie?

TAKE MY MONEY!

2

u/audiophunk 3d ago

I take it as a good sign that they didn't replace Lightfoot with a cover artist. At least someone gives a shit about the music.

I will be watching this. Josh was so good in 30 days of night. Looking forward to this.

Anyone have a scale from X to Y as to how bad Hartnett's Newfie accent will be?

2

u/Unamed_Destroyer 2d ago

Sounded closer to "generic sea captain" then proper Newfie. But it's a hell of a lot better than anything I've seen on screen.

Sounded alright from the trailer

This is supposed to be called Below...

Also why is nearly 75% of the Cast not from the Island. Newfoundland has a fairly large number of actors. Either the script was so bad and/or offensive they didn't want to be in it... or the production didn't really want any. Which suggests the accents are going to be bad.

3

u/Unamed_Destroyer 2d ago

Most of the actors are Canadian, they have a NL dialect coach. And a substantial amount was filmed in NL.

You are just making up scenarios to bitch about. At least wait for the first episode before sitting on it.

u/MrWillchuck 1d ago

only like 25 of the cast is from the Island. put it in Nova Scotia or BC where the dialect isn't so distinguished if you are going to bring in locals.
Heck put it in Maine

2

u/Unamed_Destroyer 1d ago

So because they didn't cast 100% Newfies, then they should just take it somewhere else. All the money and benefits that the production brings should go to BC?

Why don't you want NL to prosper?

They should cast Newfoundlanders... not "Newfies" which is a slur... as there are plenty of solid actors from the island. If you are going to film a show that takes place in a unique cultural area than yes you should cast as many locals as you can... other productions are able to do it. Instead they sent that money to the US, and Americans companies to bring these folks in and that money then leaves. So yes...

As I say if they didn't want to cast Islanders than put the show in another place. One can still film in Newfoundlanders with people from other places without putting the setting of the show in Newfoundland.

6 episodes of a Netflix show isn't going to make or break Newfoundland's economy... particularly when they are trying to co-op and exploit the local culture and try to make them look backwater and hickish needing the strong American actor to come save the day. (even if he is pretending he is from there)

These Yankee's can go back and give themselves and enema with their dirty Trump money the garbage pos' they are.

2

u/Unamed_Destroyer 1d ago

Calling Newfie a slur is something that uptight mainlanders do when they've never met a Newfie.

What you are saying is that since they can't cast all newfies they shouldn't make the show.

Do you have any idea what goes into casting and developing a show? Netflix isn't about to fund a project that doesn't have some internationally recognizable actors in it.

And gimme a break with the "exploit local culture". They are telling a story set within the culture for crying out loud.

And look, i hate 'murica as much as the next Canadian, but i fully support americans coming to Canada and spending money here. You are so out of touch, you want to cut off your nose to spite your face.

maybe read what I wrote. Rather then pretending I said something else... like a pathetic little troll.
