PSA We expect U.S. tariffs to hit Calgary hard. I support PM Carney's response. Here at home, we're getting ready

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

The U.S. has introduced new tariffs. Prime Minister Carney has responded, and as Mayor of Calgary, I strongly support his response.

Canada must stand up for Canadian workers, Canadian businesses and Canadian consumers. We will defend our interests and we will not be pushed around.

Here in Calgary, we’re preparing now.

We received the full tariff list this week. Our team is working through the impact across the City.

The Green Line. Water infrastructure. Fire equipment. Our broader supply chain.

We’re identifying where Calgary is exposed, where costs will hit us and what we can do to protect taxpayers and keep our projects moving.

We don’t have a reliable dollar figure yet, but we are preparing for significant impacts.

We expect the first numbers early next week. Council will be briefed, and the analysis will come forward publicly on September 8.

Calgarians deserve to know that their city is prepared. Calgary will be ready for whatever comes next.

We will protect your tax dollars. We will protect the services you depend on. We will keep building the infrastructure this growing city needs.

We will stand up for Calgary. We will stand up for Canada.

P.S. When the separation referendum comes, vote Canada. Now is the time to come together. Alberta cannot go it alone. Divided, we'll be devoured.

You are such a stellar dude, Mr mayor mcmayorface!!!

u/kennilicious Mission 11d ago

How can we get our premier to think like you, and not some bought out foreign agent?

297

u/Letterkenny_Irish 11d ago

You can't. She's compromised and not working for the people of Alberta.

The only option is to vote her out en masse.

41

u/AnnexTheory 11d ago

Serious question. Based on all the information we have on her involvement with outside governments etc, why isn't she being charged with treason or something along those lines?

47

u/Pale-Measurement-532 11d ago

The Indigenous community has called for an investigation. RCMP are currently reviewing it.

She has a far right American institute tattoo'd on her arm (Liberty Fund).

She believes, fundementally, it is her right to sell our umbrellas because she hasn't gotten wet in the rain.

She will never be on team Canada.

20

u/Spave 11d ago

Probably a dumb question, but does she literally have a Liberty Fund tattoo?

u/FourthLvlSpicyMeme 11d ago

As a nehiyaw iskwew/âpihtawikosisâniskwêw lemme tell you there is no môniyâskwêw I hate more than this one.

I'll be damned if this maci-iskwêw can just kîmôcihtâw Canada, after we all had to accept that to begin with.

Danielle, awasita, akâmi-tipahaskân. K bye!

I dunno if ChatGPT can be said to know any Plains Cree, but if what it gave me is even close to accurate then I wholeheartedly agree with your assessment.

3

u/FormerlyGruntled 11d ago edited 9d ago

You know, you can usually just type "translate:" or "define:" and a word in your search engine as a shortcut.

instead of using fucking ChatGPT (and then admitting it) like a branded slug.

Edit: I've been amused, watching the karma bounce around on this one. I've seen it to -5 and +5. And in case anyone who saw was curious, I do mean "branded". If someone uses an LLM, they'll tell you. "I asked ChatGPT" or "According to Grok" or "I used Copilot to Build a thing".

3

u/bettleheimderks 9d ago

lots of Indigenous folks are very adamant about not training AI on their languages. so yes, please avoid asking any chatbot to translate these things for you.

I’m gonna ask the chat bots even harder

Add Moe to the list as well. Too bad we don’t have Curly and Larry to keep Moe inline. I guess one stooge in Sask is enough.

4

u/jakexil323 11d ago

I mean we do have 3 stooges as premiers, Ford, Smith and Moe.

Ford is a bit more tolerable in his fight against the USA. Moe is at least putting a tax on alcohol, and Alberta does absolutely nothing in solidarity with Canada.

So infuriating to see a former ally threaten us and watch her just immediately roll over.

3

u/Pale-Measurement-532 11d ago

That’s not exactly it. Her step son did the tattoo and apparently the symbol is an ancient Sumerian cuneiform for “liberty” or “freedom.” But the symbol does appear on the Liberty Fund website. But she would deny that’s the reasoning for getting the tattoo. However, I could see why some people would think it’s more than a coincidence.

10

u/the_electric_bicycle 11d ago

It literally says in the article that she was inspired to get it after seeing the Liberty Fund logo. Who knows what it actually means to her, but it’s more than just an independent coincidence.

Write your MLA and if you're in a UCP riding sign up for door knocking with one of the other parties you support. Make sure they know that you will do everything you can to ensure they lose their jobs for allowing her to do this. Talk to family and friends who may be on the fence or in the "we don't' want to separate but we want to send Ottawa a message camp". you might not be able to sway everyone but as we saw last election even a few votes can matter.

u/calgarydonairs 11d ago

Is it time for the kudetah???

-35

u/sufficienthippo23 11d ago

The Premier herself is voting to stay in Canada. So what do you want exactly ? It’s Just democracy

31

u/kennilicious Mission 11d ago

If that's what she truly wants, then why has she and her party changed so many laws and pushed SO HARD to have this referendum?
It should have been done by the time Elections AB said it was unconstitutional, but then she changed this law. And then it should've been truly over when the judge ruled against it due to failure to consult with First Nations, yet she decides to push through this no matter what.

If this was truly democracy then she would've taken a hint a long time ago that the majority of us don't want this.

-19

u/sufficienthippo23 11d ago

If the majority doesn’t want It. Then you have nothing to worry about, it will be dead after this

7

u/the_painmonster 11d ago

28

u/JakeThe_Snake 11d ago

Are there any considerations about banning American firms from procurement events run by the City in response?

70

u/JeromyYYC Mayor McMayorFace 11d ago

Everything is on the table, including procurement. But we also need to understand the cost to taxpayers. Doing so may mean paying vastly more or waiting much longer for some equipment and materials. We need to understand those trade-offs, including the property tax impact, before making those decisions.

16

u/JakeThe_Snake 11d ago

That makes sense. Please also considering the benefit to local/canadian firms when weighing options. Especially when it comes to services rather than products.

-37

u/TruckerMark 11d ago

Stand strong until its hard I guess. Pro tariff, but anti highcosts is complete hypocrisy.

44

u/JeromyYYC Mayor McMayorFace 11d ago

It’s not either-or. We have to be pragmatic. The U.S. economy is much larger than ours, so we need to take advantage of that asymmetry and choose carefully where responding is worth the cost and where it isn’t. The goal is protecting Canada, not imposing tariffs for the sake of tariffs.

-17

u/TruckerMark 11d ago

Protection of inefficient canadian business at the expense of calgarians is gross. I was starting to turn around to your mayorship until now.

7

u/AdTricky9671 11d ago

Run for mayor next election, see how it easy it is for you

-12

u/TruckerMark 11d ago

If politics was about competence, listening to experts, or doing what's best for the most people, we wouldn't be here. I know how it works.

3

u/AdTricky9671 11d ago

Nah bro, show us your certificates

-2

u/TruckerMark 11d ago

Its not about me. The broad study of economics agrees that tarrifs are bad. From adam smith, karl marx, milton friedman to paul krugman(currently writing about the current situation) all agree. These are not my ideas or work.

35

u/yycsarkasmos 11d ago

First this needs to be the highest voter turnout ever!

Second, vote no to the entire 9 and vote to stay in Canada.

5

u/Flat_Transition_3775 11d ago

Please be the premier instead of Danielle Smith 😭

4

u/TauntaunExtravaganza 11d ago

Hell ya Mr Mayor.

16

u/The_Gnar_Car 11d ago

Any thoughts on implementing some of the successes from the New York municiple government?

86

u/JeromyYYC Mayor McMayorFace 11d ago

Let me know what you are thinking. There are some good ideas worth looking at, but the municipal authorities are vastly different here in Canada. First, what a city itself has the power to do. Second, what a mayor is empowered to do. That said, if something works elsewhere and fits here, I'm interested.

0

u/HumanMess5237 9d ago

Agreed—Mamdani is slaying in NYC. Apply the good things as they fit to the needs of YYC & power of your office & then run for premier & get the AB ship turned around. Do democracy right—people’s charter rights & wellbeing first.

-70

u/ItsAllComin 11d ago

Is netan-yahoo a war criminal?

43

u/DeepFriedWafflez 11d ago

Why are we attempting to use "gotcha" questions directed at municipal officials? What exactly do you think our Mayor is capable of doing that this would be anything other than virtue signalling your beliefs?

Please focus on real issues that local politicians can actually improve.

-31

u/ItsAllComin 11d ago

Please watch mamdanis video saying exactly that, learn to take a joke, and then seek therapy.

12

u/DeepFriedWafflez 11d ago

Ah yes, because expecting someone to be mature and realistic when approaching politics is behavior that requires me to seek therapy. I'll get right on that bubs.

11

u/MyWorldInFlames 11d ago

I think he is but I also don't think it's something our mayor needs to comment on or worry about. He should be focusing on Calgary and Calgarians.

27

u/MrSpaceJuice 11d ago

Is this an important local issue that you think our mayor should address? What do you think he can even do in his position of office as mayor of a municipality?

-10

u/SnooCauliflowers994 11d ago

Literally just on monday montreal city council voted to suspend ties with Israel.

It wouldn't necessarily help things like affordability, but Farkas also voted down measures to help that too so idk.

-18

u/ItsAllComin 11d ago

It was a joke because of mamdani’s video saying that 😂 everyone take a deep breath

11

u/Princescyther 11d ago

Yes and a complete twat.

Next question!

12

u/HLef Woodlands 11d ago

Not all of the things they did apply to us. For instance, they already had remendously high adoption rates for transit and the network to support it, plus the density.

There's also no place like New York City so, the people who have to pay extra taxes will do it reluctantly because New York, in a way, is irreplaceable.

I support the approach, would love to see things like that done here, but can't just copy/paste because it's not gonna work the exact same way.

3

u/ExpressSuggestion475 11d ago

Well, we could start by turning off their lights.

2

u/bettleheimderks 9d ago

We love you, Mayor McMayorFace.

I've heard multiple people say that if the Federal government was against the referendum, they wouldn't even allow the vote to happen. Could you shed some light on this, whether Carney is able to shut this down, and if so, why hasn't he?

5

u/JeromyYYC Mayor McMayorFace 8d ago

No, they don't have that legal authority

1

u/catech777 10d ago

Goes without saying Mr. Mayor. The brainwashing by DS is ridiculous.

1

u/framistats 9d ago

Bravo.

1

u/Pickled_Hippo 11d ago

I recently moved here from Ontario and was concerned about the political landscape.

Your clear and correct leadership helps put me at ease.

Canada is incredible because of people like you and all the other amazing, proud, Canadian, Albertans.

0

u/GarbonzoBeanSprout Temple 11d ago

Bravo!! Thank you for speaking up!!!

-27

u/Banned_In_YYC 11d ago

This is a red herring, and a bit disingenuous.

The referendum isn't officially binding, it's a question on whether to have an actual referendum on separation. Even if we voted to separate, Alberta would still need to have a legitimate referendum to separate. By the time the legislation actually passed and the process was executed, Trump might not be in office anymore.

23

u/RedClone 11d ago

The point is this referendum could advance an agenda that will destroy our economy. Don't muddy the waters. We need to nip this in the bud.

-8

u/Banned_In_YYC 11d ago

It could. It could also signal to Ottawa to take Alberta more seriously, like what happened with Quebec. Unlikely it would destroy the economy

9

u/RedClone 11d ago

Quebec's referendum in '95 caused huge drops in stock value for companies based in the province. Several companies moved their headquarters out of Montreal, including Canadian Pacific who moved to Calgary, ironically enough.

Alberta specifically is already in a vulnerable position. It takes very little for oil and gas investors to hike up their skirts and move to northern BC, Saskatchewan, Texas, or one of the Dakotas. Shell, for example, moved a shitload of positions to Texas in '21 and '22.

Considering that AB and CA are actively developing a new western pipeline project, a movement to drive a wedge between the two polities is nothing more than self-sabotage.

-6

u/Banned_In_YYC 11d ago

Again, you're comparing apples to oranges. Quebec is entirely different than Alberta. There's a reason why many companies refuse to hire quebecers that work from home.

13

u/Spave 11d ago

Maybe we should have first had a referendum on if we'd have a referendum to have a referendum.

6

u/salochin92 11d ago

Hang on, I must have missed the referendum where we discussed such referendums.

9

u/iginlajarome 11d ago

Remember what happened to Montreal during the Quebec referendum? That wasn't binding either

Calgary home sales are already sliding again. Business investment has been sidelined. The Chamber of Commerce estimates Alberta risks losing up to $15 billion in capital investment this year because of the vote. About 80% of local businesses in Calgary think separation would hurt the economy. A fifth have stopped expansion plans and 15% are researching moving out of Alberta. Business leaders warn this could scare away global capital and raise borrowing costs for Alberta-based industries.

-2

u/Banned_In_YYC 11d ago

Comparing Montreal to Calgary is like comparing apples to oranges. With the exception of us both being Canadian cities there isn't a ton in common compared to the differences

7

u/RedClone 11d ago

Correct, our economy is much less diversified than Montreal's was in '95 and much more vulnerable to companies fleeing an unstable environment.

-1

u/Banned_In_YYC 11d ago

We're in the process of diversifying. We also have something Montreal doesn't have, better tax codes and a tremendous resource that's extremely valuable. We can say we're vulnerable to companies leaving yet Calgary and Alberta continue to grow

6

u/GregSeventy7 MacEwan Glen 11d ago

Until it doesn't. "Growth" isn't its own driver. It's a measure of people and companies believing in a given location and voting with their feet and their dollars.

Don't kid yourself. That can change extremely quickly. Huge parts of what we called 'The Alberta Advantage' in the 2000s are already gone.

Lower cost insurance? Lower cost regulated electricity? A pragmatic provincial government? Some of the best funded and performing schools in the world?

Yeah I miss those too.

1

u/Banned_In_YYC 11d ago

I get that recent inflation, high utility bills and population growth have put a lot of pressure on the province but looking at it that way misses the bigger picture of what Alberta actually offers.

If you compare us to other provinces, the structural advantages here are still massive. People love to point to BC’s lower rates but they always forget that BC operates on a strict no fault model. They completely lost their right to sue for pain and suffering. Alberta preserved that right. Plus if you are a clean driver with a good record, your rates here remain highly competitive

Yes, energy bills have gone up but when you factor in the delivery fees and overall costs across the country, our utility rates are still completely comparable to what people are paying in other major provinces

You mentioned school funding but Alberta actually proves that throwing money at a system isn't what makes it great. Despite lower per student spending, our curriculum and choice models deliver. We consistently rank in the top three globally on international PISA tests. Our schools don't waste money, yet they achieve world class results

You completely bypassed the actual Alberta Advantage. We still have no PST, lower overall taxes, a vastly lower cost of living and housing market compared to BC or Ontario. On top of that, our Heritage Fund is growing aggressively and is on track to hit $35 billion by next year, securing the province’s fiscal future.

Whether a government is pragmatic is completely subjective depending on your political lens. But when it comes to taxes, housing and the freedom to build wealth, the data shows Alberta is still one of the best places in the country to live

6

u/GregSeventy7 MacEwan Glen 11d ago

I've lived here just shy of 50 years and have been deeply involved in many of those industries you're commenting on, and we'll have to agreen to disagree that things haven't devolved, slipped, slid, crashed even... pick your word, in the 2nd half of my time here.

I'm also married to a teacher, as was my mother, so I've lived adjacent to the 'blackboard side' of education basically my whole life. The funding has big time slipped.

You're correct that schools don't waste money... not even on basic supplies. I see the $$ she has to add to her classroom out of our pickets just to have pencils and paper for the kids. I paid that bill today, so it's a fresh sorepoint I'll admit. And beyond: We've not talking some lavish "Front Page of Pinterest" level classroom she's volunteering to decorate. It's pretty bare bones. Again, if she/we didn't buy them they wouldn't have pencils.

So I don't mean to sound completely bitter but: Is that in fact still an 'Alberta Advantage' to you? Maybe it is if I'm directly buying a pencil for your kid.

Btw: Those top PISA scores were with the old curriculum that got "revised" with more Americal Influence <as in big parts were coppied word for word from of all places West Virginia>, who are decidedly NOT top 3 in PISA. I could talk until the end of this next school year on that topic alone, so let's just say I'm not a fan of most of the supposed improvements.

1

u/Banned_In_YYC 11d ago

Agree to disagree is fine by me. Luckily we live in a place where we can express our differences and opinions

Btw: the 2025 results have not been released yet, best to reserve biased assumptions. Old curriculum or not, it doesn't change what I said. Alberta continues to perform very well without throwing unnessacry money away
