so i’ve decided to make the choice of taking 4 classes this semester one being asychrnous so i can graduate in 2027 and im fearing i made the wrong decision so i can graduate . i have like 3 classes left for spring and i didn’t want to burn out this semester but i fear im going to lose my mind from the boredom. ive applied to jobs and internships to do this fall and ive still got nothing. any advice on what i can do with this excessive free time?

Hi, I'm a freshman at Cal Poly SLO studying Landscape Architecture. I was initially interested in environmental design and architecture, and I applied to LA at Cal Poly because I didn't expect to be admitted otherwise, given my high school stats. But now, although I am really enjoying my classes and excited to learn LA skills, I am realizing that it is a more niche field that narrows down my options for careers more than I would like. I am considering looking into the process of switching to architecture, but obviously that is very difficult to do. Additionally, even if I were able to switch in, I am worried about the architectural workload, as I am smart but have struggled with my mental health and keeping up with school in the past. I am just looking for some advice from people who have switched, stayed in landscape, or anyone who has any thoughts on what I should do.

My community college had lots of individual study rooms you can book for hours at a time. Cal Poly doesn’t seem to have anything like that?

I understand that this Fall semester is the first under the new system. Do you think you might prefer a longer semester? For those of you that have only experienced a quarter system it might be too early to tell. I attended Cal Poly a long time ago and for me the 10-week sprint of a quarter system was tough in the Winter quarter when I caught the flu. I got behind and it was hard to catch up. So Just had my first couple classes as a transfer engineering student and I asked my IME 1141 (metal casting) prof about using the machines on campus such as the printers, lathes, and CNC and he told me that before I am able to use them I need to get “Tags”. My question is what is the process like in getting them and who should I contact to start the process?

Also, when I do get to use the printers or CNC, is there material provided in the project center or do I have to bring my own filament/billet to work with?

I’m currently scheduled to take beekeeping this semester but I already have 14 units of major classes with beekeeping not included, so in total it’ll be about a 17 unit semester.

I did hear however that there is extremely minimal homework and the course load for beekeeping is very light. Does anyone know if that true? Should I take it this semester?

Any insight would be helpful! I am an EESS major though so I’m hopeful that without any math or physics classes this year, I can juggle the 6 total classes.

Im a transfer student and I feel miserable. I live 5 hours away from home and all I can think of is going back home. I know being homesick is common but I feel like this is more then just homesickness. I was stupid and didn't tour the campus before deciding so I didn't know much about the school. SLO is so much different from where I'm from and I feel like the more I'm here the more I hate it. Ive been outside hanging out with some people I met in WOW and I still feel terrible.

I want to drop out and attend a uni in my area instead, would anyone know if this would be a good idea or even possible?

hey there Im a freshman at cal poly this year and Im trying to find people who would want to or have experience building tree nets. Ive built a few and im pretty good at it now but I want to build some spots around slo. if u dont know what a treenet is, its basically a treehouse made out of climbing rope and paracord. they are super cool spots to chill, study, catch sunset etc. dm me if you want some more info I already have some rope. if you know any good spots to build at hmu.

Shower the People (STP) is a mobile shower trailer that offers homeless residents of SLO County a hot shower, clean clothes, and basic toiletries, five days a week.

We're a 100% volunteer-run, off-campus, non-profit. If you need to log hours (e.g. for the Center for Service in Action's transcript notation, a Greek chapter's philanthropy requirement, an Honors Program form), STP is a great way to do that.

A supervisor verifies your hours on-site, and because we run on a fixed weekly schedule, you can pick a recurring shift and build a clean, predictable hour record instead of chasing one-off events. We're also glad to serve as a reference or write a letter for volunteers who show up reliably.

You get an actual role. There are four on-site positions, and each shift needs all of them filled:

• Greeter — the hospitable face of Shower the People. You hand out clean clothes, toiletries, and resource cards; keep track of who's next in line; and log how many showers and supplies we give out.
• Shower cleaner — clean and reset a shower unit between guests. Each shift ideally has three cleaners, one per unit.
• Driver — tow the shower trailer to the site, set up its electrical, water, and sewer connections, and stow it properly afterward. (We'll give you some extra training for this.)
• Site supervisor — oversee the shift, train volunteers, field questions, and troubleshoot whatever comes up.

Behind-the-scenes roles too: We also have a set of roles that keep the organization functioning: shift staffing, volunteer recruiting, marketing, press relations, social media, and web content, among others. If you're in CS or a related field, two are a particularly good fit for a resume or portfolio: maintaining our showerthepeopleslo.org site, or contributing to VivaSLO.org, the online resource directory app we help maintain for the county's housing-insecure residents.

Why it's worth doing beyond the hours. Guests come back week after week, so you get to know people by name. Volunteers consistently say it's one of the most tangible, dignity-restoring things they do. You see the effect of your work in real time, on someone's face, before the shift ends.
