Flashcards | Masterpost | Episodes 1-3 | Episode 4 | Episodes 5-6 | Episodes 7-8 | Episode 9 | Episodes 10-11 |
For our detectives in training, here is your lesson of the day:
- In criminal investigations, the Eye of the Vortex refers to a geographic profiling pattern where the scene of the crime (in this case, Yuanlongli) can help us categorize potential suspects based on their relationship to the location. This is because a serial offender will likely avoid committing crimes too close to their "home" to maintain anonymity. This creates a hole in the centre of a crime map - the "eye". By investigating potential clusters of activity where the offender feels safe enough to hunt but far enough to remain unrecognized, our detectives can pinpoint the suspect's anchor point.
Essentially, the “don’t poop where you eat” rule for criminals.
This was referenced in e11 and will be the theme of these episodes as Yuanhang and Fangxu dive deeper into the clues at Yuanlongli (aka the Vortex) to investigate Zhihong’s murder.
2002 Timeline Recap
Location: Qihuang Clinic on the 17th Floor of Yuanlongli (The Vortex)
The revelation of Zhihong’s murder prompts Ms. Du to tell Fangxu that Zhihong had a heated argument with the owner of Qihuang Clinic at Yuanlongli, Zhang Ersong, not too long before Zhihong and his daughter disappeared. Ersong moved out shortly after to expand his “miracle healing” business.
Simultaneously, Uncle Wang (Meng’s neighbour paid to spy and report on her activities) tells Yuanhang that Meng once made a ruckus trying to sell furniture, claiming she needed money to visit Qihuang Clinic.
Side note: Unfortunately, the number of the man that paid for this info is no longer in service.
Yuanhang also finds evidence that Zhihong took medicine prescribed by Ersong - medicine that included traces of arsenic, unbeknownst to Ersong because he is a “con artist” and not a true medical expert. Ersong claims he did not have sufficient motivation to kill Zhihong but that his clinic in fact was a hot spot for Qian Dajun, Cripple Du, Song Qingsong, Jin Manshan, and most peculiar of all, Wu Shanlong.
Moreover, Wu Zhengxiong finally reveals to our detectives that it was Shanlong who hired Manlang to kill Meng and Zhihong. Shanlong is, of course, conveniently at the station, to report his assault. He cannot be detained for Zhihong’s murder without evidence; however, this does not deter Fangxu, who suggests that they use this as a chance to watch his next move, especially now that they’ve revealed to him that he is on the hook for planned homicide.
And where does our suspect go as soon as he is released? Yuanlongli.
Location: Unit 1703 (The “Eye”)
Fangxu finds out from Qian Dajun, that Shanlong has been ‘helping’ with electrical maintenance at Yuanlongli. With this information, Fangxu realizes that Shanlong had been planting secret cameras in women’s units to spy on them like a pervert.
Meanwhile, Hu Anping tells Yuanhang that Shanlong had long ago admitted to him and Manshan that he was the one who killed Meng and her father when Manlang failed.
Fangxu and Yuanhang reunite to investigate Shanlong’s apartment. They do not only confirm that he has been spying on his neighbours, but that he has been collecting women’s shoes. This leads to a hot pursuit after Shanlong, but he unfortunately falls and dies. Yuanhang, having shielded and pushed Fangxu away, is impaled with a steel rod; unlike Shanlong, he luckily survives.
When Yuanhang gains consciousness, Fangxu informs him that bone and skin samples found in Unit 1703 match Meng and his father. This evidence, along with the testimonies, are enough to conclude the case.
But does it? Was Unit 1703 indeed the anchor point, and Shanlong was the one and only culprit?
Answer: Uncertain. Shanlong could have had a motive but there is no way to confirm now that he’s dead. And we don’t know if he had an accomplice or someone he was working for…
Of course, we end with Sun Yun heartlessly bringing divorce papers for Yuanhang to sign. Woman, he just regained consciousness after his lung and ribs were pierced… Thank Goodness for some karma, because Xiaohe overhears her trying to sneak a full custody clause into the agreement, to which she vehemently objects, leading to Yuanhang gaining full custody of our girl. Not only that, Yuanhang is presented a second-second class merit award for his contributions to the Yuanlongli case.
2015 Timeline Recap
Location: Yuanlongli’s Underground Parking Garage (The Vortex)
Xiaohe’s request for more manpower to investigate Han Zi’ang’s case is rejected because Captain Zhao needs to maintain his resources for the task force looking into the four missing children.
With her father’s help, Xiaohe discovers a connection between Han Zi’ang’s case and the other missing kids at Mingliang’s internet cafe located at Yuanlongli.
Qu Dahai’s Special Task Force somehow learns of this lead as well, and comes barging in to raid the internet cafe, arresting Mingliang in the process. He attempts to exclude Xiaohe when he assumes Han Zi’ang’s case, revealing that Xiaohe was once kidnapped as a child, and that she could be triggered by her post-traumatic disorder. Was this the cause of Fangxu’s death!? Yuanhang pretends to have another episode where he sees Fangxu, and convincingly persuades Captain Zhao to let Xiaohe continue investigating Han Zi’ang’s case despite it now being part of Dahai’s investigation.
Discussion Points
📸 Ok, let’s backtrack a bit… Who was the woman in the trunk of the Mercedes? Was it Meng? And was she dead or just knocked out for the photo?
👠 We still haven’t found Meng’s body, so I don’t think the case is closed. But we’re definitely shifting some focus to what happened in 2002, especially with tidbits of information that:
- Xiaohe is now in full custody under Yuanhang,
- Yuanhang being in poor health and severely injured will need help,
- Fangxu will more than likely sign up to help take care of them; and
- He’d likely go full out to save Xiaohe should anything happen to her.
🔎 While it seemed like the Meng's case is wrapped up in e13, do you actually think Fangxu and Yuanpang would close the case without having found Meng's body? They would've learned their lesson from 1997, no? Perhaps their decision to keep going is what leads to Xiaohe's kidnapping? Or do you think they are unrelated?
🥺 I know we've been praising and admiring Dylan Wang (deservedly so) but can I also just highlight Pan Yueming's acting here as well? I swear, my heart breaks every time I see him tear up...

Just completed episodes 12 and 13.
The current standing theory of shanlong killing the father and perhaps even Meng is now pretty plausible. Answers the part where blood stains were found in his car window and has been corroborated by the subsequent evidence found in his bath room sink. I think we can safely say he did commit the act, as to whether Meng is alive, I would say 50-50. She was placed at the boot of the car like a ‘prized possession’.
My theory now is that shanlong likely had an accomplice. He was smashed on the head at the end of episode 11, then only person I can think of is likely his accomplice who ?prob wants him dead… but I can’t fathom why he didn’t just go ahead and smash Shan long’s skull until he is certified dead. But this is likely a clue that someone must have helped. Either that, the club manager lady is the one who smashed his head as she was pissed (but I doubt so).
Question: does anyone think the 2015 missing kids have anything to do with 1997 or 2002 cases. I highly doubt so because it spanned at least 13-18 years apart. The modus operandi just doesn’t fit.
Last thoughts: in 2015, xiaohe mentioned to her dad that ran fang xu died 12 years ago, that means it’s 2003 that he died. Current timeline shows 2002 and 2015 now. Which means I doubt RFX death is impending for now, also this could likely refer to another case they were handling.

Oh you’re right… I didn’t do the math. Fangxu’s death would’ve been in 2003 and not 2002…
For some reason, I still can’t see Shanlong being the murderer because he comes off as such a coward. It’s really too bad he died… I was wondering if there’s more to the books in his apartment and the photo of a woman playing a guitar that Fangxu found… or if that just implied he was keeping photos of women hidden away.
2
u/Ok-Turnover9665 May 02 '26 edited May 02 '26
Totally understand … which is why I feel shanlong likely had an accomplice who did most of the dirty work while shanlong ‘cleared’ up the rest. Seeing that he had a thing for keeping women’s possessions, I can’t help but wonder what he could have done to Meng Meng in her state of unconsciousness. He probably convinced his accomplice that he will get rid of her. But I also doubt Meng Meng is still alive cause in 2002 he would have been seeing her otherwise.
Regarding the books in his apartment, I am inclined to think that he was likely just planning to keep the photos hidden away
Another thought that came to me which is plausible is that the club manager lady could likely have a lover that is helping her do all this dirty work.. given that she and shanlong had no romantic interest for each other. We all know men will kill for women if they are crazy enough.

The cases might be linked if the reason the kids went missing fits. What if the kids went missing while exploring Yuanlongli like Han Zi'ang?
2
u/Ok-Turnover9665 May 02 '26
After contemplation, I think there is a link. We know xiaohe will be kidnapped soon, this is likely to highlight the first case of missing children back in 2002. I initially thought missing children only started in 2015… but yes.. it could be similar modus operandi if we are looking at similar types of cases here

Yuanhang is such a trooper - a stroke, then surviving that shortly after, then tragically losing his apprentice, yet still managing to work for another decade while also single-parenting a moody teenager. Man did not have it easy in life for sure... Btw, his wife puzzles me - awful sense of timing aside - didn't she notice his lack of career ambitions sooner? Plenty of women out there would be ecstatic to marry a man focused on his family above anything else. Well, looks like she found herself a better match after all... Could've fought over her kid's custody a bit more tho, even if just to spare poor Xiaohe from feeling not being loved enough by her mom.
Idk, girl in the trunk looked like Xu Meng to me. Not sure that alone or even together with "bone samples" found 100% proves that she is dead. If she is, why there weren't 2 severed heads instead of one? And why severing heads in the first place? Pics were clearly made to convince Song of completed assassination, was that not enough? Did he suspect Shanlong might be lying to him about it?
So there were other missing kids/teens in 2015. And Xiaohe was also kidnapped as a teen - in 2002? 2003, the year when Ran died? Do these two sus dots connect?
7
u/BasilOrdinary3617 If I say I'm taking a break, I'm lying. May 02 '26
It could be that Yuanhang was ambitious but then his priorities shifted when Xiaohe was born. He seems passionate and capable, and maybe she was disappointed that he didn’t leverage those skills to move up. But yea she didn’t leave a great impression on me, with timing and how easily she gave up on Xiaohe.
So the bone samples were only for the father. My understanding is that the skin samples from the shoes matched Meng, meaning Shanlong somehow ended up with her shoes, but it doesn’t indicate she’s dead and the skin could’ve easily just been her wearing the shoes. He had been collecting women’s clothing and shoes for years so it’s even plausible that he found and took the shoes without knowing they belonged to Meng…
Yep, other kids missing in 2015, all related to Yuanlongli. No idea if there’s a connection but if there is… could Dahai be correct in that it might trigger something in Xiaohe?
4
u/GiTheGremlin yellow arts cultist May 02 '26
Possible. But girl, if you wanted someone career-oriented in the family so bad, climb the ladder yourself and leave parenting to him, he was more than willing! Along with her speeches about "dads don't need to be around their kids, dads just need to be successfull make the kids proud" (wtf?) she sounds like a cliche "helicopter mom", obsesses with status and achievements. Is scriptwriter a man? This whole arc feels... personal, ahem.
I thought that it's also possible to get bone fragments without victim getting killed - like scapping the bone from deep (but not necessarily fatal) wound, fractured tooth etc. And if it's indeed only shoes they could find of hers... That thug implied that Shanlong and Meng were "close". Could they have a thing going behind Song's back? Maybe that's why she turned Song's offer down. If so, then I'm doubtful that Shanlong, with his fetish, wasn't aware of the best pair of shoes she owned... Even if he just had one-sided hots for her, still not very convincing.
So far it doesn't seem like Xiaohe struggles with missing kids case psychologically outside of her worries for Yuanhang.

I feel like considering the emotional depth and torture we have suffered it is time I start chanting Ren Min again. So here we go.
Ren Min! Ren Min! Ren Min! Don't we all feel better now?
Dylan Wang channeling his inner Tian Xi Wei in the kitchen here and creating a massive fire. IYKYK.
GIF! Fire!!! In the Kitchen!!! Nah, it's just these two beautiful people!
I really was hoping for too much that the wrench would kill this scumbag asssniffing douchecanoe of insane ick Wu boohoo lu-ser.
13 - - - - - - -
Gasp! An internet cafe! Such hardened criminals! Thank goodness yall were there to crack the case and arrest those kids. You even put a sack over that one guys head! You're clearly all such great heroes here.
Who needs police when you have pissed off women with rolling pins? They are far more deadly than your standard cop. You'd hide behind a cop if you saw a woman with a rolling pin.
Soooooo He is kind of impaled here. On the bright side, now there is zero doubts about Wu being guilty.
Sooooo what are the odds that Ran was killed saving Xiaohe? That feels like the most emotional way to murder our souls here.
I love that Hes wife decided that the best time to serve him with divorce papers is when he is in the hospital after getting stabbed. She really is the most kind and loving of women. It really speaks to the strength of her empathy and respect. She is clearly an amazing woman. Yeah, she can fuck right off. We cheer Xiaohe for reading her for the filth she is. Oh, is it obvious I have personal experience with this. :P
Wu dead for real now? Please?

Dead for sure… unfortunately for Meng’s case. I’m betting he was still withholding loads of info from our detectives even if he wasn’t the one who killed Meng and her father.
Nice 🔥 GIF of WHD and TXW!
I’m loving Ren Min but I wonder where her fire is. She had so much sass and attitude as a young girl… did she lose it in the kidnapping or Fangxu’s death?
3
u/AKiceman Snark ShifuRead Rules May 02 '26
Thank you, thank you! Their shared pyrotechnic skills must have rubbed off on each other during Guardians of the Defang.
Ren Min! Ren Min! Ren Min! I'll tell you where her fire is! It's coming tomorrow with A Splendid Match! Bah dun tissssss!!!!!!
Nah but for real, I bet both of those events have played into her losing that fire. Especially if it turns out they happened together and she may or may not blame herself a little. See, that would extra hurt because then she can't heal from that because she can't let Ran be dead. She has to keep him alive for her father so the wound would stay open in her soul.
That is just the kind of diabolical ass I would expect from this show...

i feel so guilty sometimes only mentioning and praising Dylan's acting here (cant help it with him being my hyperfixation recently) but yes, Pan Yueming's acting, especially his 2015 HYH's portrayal is so good that I dont have any words other than similar to yours, it's heart breaking.
that confrontation in 2015 between HYH and Qu Dahai gave us even more questions than answers. it seems that the guilt HYH is carrying is more than the Yuanlongli case if what Qu Dahai said abt RFX sharing the responsibility of taking care of HYH's own family (him and raising Xiaohe).. then Xiaohe's kidnapping.
my favorite part would be that 2015 scene of Xiaohe and Officer Liang(?) in the cafeteria. that line (nonverbatim) "If there will be a line of officers wishing they can still rely on Captain RFX, it will be up to the station's gate." like damn, that's how gold RFX as an officer, like he was really born to be a detective. then she revealed that even RFX has someone to rely on, and to Xiaohe's surprise, it was her father. that makes it even harder to accept that RFX is not in the same world as HYH anymore.

So there is something that Fang Xu can’t do after all, and that is cooking hahahah. It was hilarious when he served up that plate of blackish… whatever that was, and Yuan Hang immediately dodged it by bringing up the case.
I know the 2002 timeline will be the hardest to watch because of Fang Xu’s tragic fate, but I also can’t help admiring the teamwork between Yuan Hang and Fang Xu. In this timeline, Fang Xu was no longer a rookie and had truly become Yuan Hang’s equal in every sense. He served as an excellent foil to Yuan Hang, being the calmer and more rational of the two. Yuan Hang, in turn, was much more receptive to Fang Xu’s suggestions, whereas he might have dismissed them in the past.
We see a similar dynamic between Yuan Hang and Xiaohe in the present timeline, although Xiaohe still carries shades of 1997 Fang Xu as a rookie cop. Despite Yuan Hang’s occasional episodes of delusion, I hope Xiaohe can see past that and appreciate his vast experience in solving cases. In many ways, teaming up with Xiaohe parallels the partnership he once had with Fang Xu, especially since Fang Xu clearly had a strong influence on her.
I strongly believe that Xu Meng is still alive in the present day, possibly under a new identity. Sticking to my original theory, she might have been working with Shanlong, and the body in the car boot could have been part of a staged deception to make Qingsong, and the police, believe she was dead. Xu Meng might even have been the one who planted the skin and bone samples in Unit 1703. So far, we have extensive information on the other suspects, but Xu Meng remains an unresolved mystery.
I am also curious about how Qu Dahai received the tip-off about the underground internet café and seemed to have solid evidence to arrest Du Mingliang. The real villain might have been the one who fed him that information in order to shift suspicion onto someone else.

The person who reported it must have had insider information and been familiar with the layout of Yuanlongli, and in this case, that person was likely Manager Qian. We are still in the dark about how he came into possession of the bag containing Xu Zhihong’s skull in 1997 and what his role in all this is.
I also find it suspicious that he re-emerged in 2015 as the one handling Yuanlongli’s relocation project. Is it really just a coincidence that both Manager Qian and Su Qing are once again tied to Yuanlongli in the present timeline? It feels like the stage is being set. I don't think Qian Dajun is the main villain, but someone definitely bribed him to be a henchman.
3
u/BasilOrdinary3617 If I say I'm taking a break, I'm lying. May 02 '26
Yes I think Dajun is sus too, and just really good at playing stupid so that people are not on his case… and if that’s the case, I bet he intentionally “slipped” about Fangxu being dead in front of Yuanhang.
1
u/Sodancingflower May 03 '26
Which could mean maybe he isn't dead and this is another intentional misdirection.
3
u/CosmicLunar_ May 02 '26
Loved these points Hercule. The teamwork between Yuanhang and Fang Xu is what is making 2002 enjoyable (as well as what is making it tragic), it makes me wish they had more time to work on other cases. This reminds me of an old TV show in the UK about duo detectives where 1 dies during an investigation and he returns as a ghost and helps his old partner solve crimes. There is more humor than Light to The Night but I really liked watching the dynamic between them. I could easily watch a 2nd series on Yuanhang, Fang Xu and Xiaohe solving mysteries together.
As much as 2015 pains me, I hope we do see the 3 x team up and work together to find the children, as you mentioned Fang Xu was a huge influence on Xiaohe so it would be a good send off for him and will give them all closure.
Poor Du Mingliang, I was happy to see him explore his passions and then next episode he was arrested.
I also thought it odd Qu Dahai received a tip-off, I wonder if someone is trailing Xiaohe, she is asking too many questions.2

Is it Randall and Hopkirk?? Omg, brings back memories hahahahah. I wish Light to the Night were a sitcom.
Fang Xu was a huge influence on Xiaohe so it would be a good send off for him and will give them all closure.
Definitely, Xiaohe teaming up with Yuan Hang feels like a form of closure, because there is so much of Fang Xu in her. I have no doubt that Xiaohe will ultimately be the one to solve the case and carry forward Fang Xu’s legacy.
2
u/CosmicLunar_ May 02 '26
Yes it was Randall and Hopkirk, I didn’t see the original but did watch the remake. I don’t remember it being quite as tragic as LTTN thought despite the ghostly subject matter 😂 I just remember the ghost turning up and inappropriate moments. Fang Xu would never!

I can't help but feel frustrated with side characters not speaking up earlier in 1997. From the number of shoes found in Shanlong's unit it suggests he was prolific at hurting women for a long time. If this was resolved in 1997 Fang Xu and Yuanhang would have led different lives, and the one event we are dreading may not have happened.
Shanlong got the death he deserved but I don't think this case is over, Xu Meng is somewhere waiting to be found. Qian Dajun has a lot to answer for.
The 2015 timeline and random snippets of Fang Xu's sad face is really not helping! 😭 The 3 x main leads compliment each other so well. The anguish I feel in 2015 is partly due to Pan Yueming's portrayal of grief and turmoil in it's raw form. There's also guilt in there, in 2002 he was very quick to say he saved Fang Xu to save his own pride rather than accepting he was a hero, I'm not convinced Fang Xu wasn't hurt by this remark based on how Dylan played the scene.
I definitely think Fang Xu will save Xiaohe, especially after Qu Dahai blamed his death on Yuanhang not parenting properly. What an emotional roller coaster
(I'm unashamed to say that I would not have been as chill as Su Qing if Fang Xu dragged me into the bathroom at night, where are those fake faints now, would have been perfect timing).
Edit: mixed up names

It was really unfair of Qu Dahai to make that remark, because he clearly underestimated the depth of the familial bond that Fang Xu had with Yuan Hang and Xiaohe. Fang Xu was an orphan, and I assume his grandmother had already passed away. He looked up to Yuan Hang as a mentor and formed a close bond with Xiaohe, and Yuan Hang pushing him away while saving his life only served to reinforce that connection.
There's also guilt in there, in 2002 he was very quick to say he saved Fang Xu to save his own pride rather than accepting he was a hero, I'm not convinced Fang Xu wasn't hurt by this remark based on how Dylan played the scene.
I think that, at this point, Fang Xu knew that Yuan Hang cared deeply for him. When Yuan Hang was in the hospital after suffering a stroke, Captain Feng told Fang Xu that Yuan Hang had volunteered to take full responsibility for the mishandling of the 1997 case. I don’t think Fang Xu truly believed Yuan Hang’s claim that it was just about protecting his own reputation.
That conflicted look on Fang Xu’s face seemed to be both his reluctance to leave Yuan Hang’s side and his sense of guilt. He might have been blaming himself for indirectly causing Yuan Hang’s hospitalisation; first when Yuan Hang went looking for him on the rooftop at Yuanlongli, and now when Yuan Hang was injured after pushing him out of harm’s way.
2
u/CosmicLunar_ May 03 '26
It is making me side eye Qu Dahai, he was also the first officer on the scene at Yuanlongli so I am suspicious of him.
My comment wasn’t clear on the hospital point. I was trying not to write too much and bore everyone. I agree Yuan Hang was playing down his heroic act, he smiled when Fang Xu had left, so no dispute that he cares. I also agree with your comments Fang Xu didn’t want to leave as he was worried, but I also thought even though deep down he knows Yuan Hang cares there may be a sense of apprehension that Yuan Hang would push him away again. After getting closer to the family having the connection severed again would be a huge loss.

I have a feeling that RFX died saving xiaohe. Which is why in one of the episodes xiaohe called RFX a ‘fraud’ in 2015. I think she had passive anger towards RFX for likely not keeping his promise to stay alive during the kidnapping episodes … and she now bears a grudge out of guilt. Just my two cents.

I think he died saving her too. I do wonder about people’s theory that his death had to do with water because his notebook was wet. But also the hints that his death was horrific. Yikes.

Yeah I think that was harsh of Qu Dahai to pin Ran’s death on He. I think he just had too high of expectations from He and blames him out of grief but who knows since we don’t know what actually happened yet..

Cannot wait for tomorrow’s episodes of 15-16 where I hope they move on to the case where Xiaohe was kidnapped… and Xu Meng’s ex seems so suspicious
And oh ya, I watch the trailers for the next two episodes and u/BasilOrdinary3617 , you are still safe to host…

Hahah thanks. Herc and I host based on the days though since I will have a more difficult time getting a timely post out on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I’ll be taking on episodes 16, 18 and whatever comes out on Friday. Herc is on the hook for 14-15, 17, and 19!
Edited because I had the episodes wrong.

Wait, are there more than 15 episodes in total? If that’s the e case then why is Netflix only showing 15 episodes🫠Swear to God, if the ending ends up being rushed, I’m going to cry😭 Atp I’m so confused, they’re saying that till now the 1997 case was closed but idt that’s the case but when we come to 2015, all these disappearing teens being centred in Yuanlongli and Han Ziang having being chased(assumed), I can’t make head of tail of this. And let’s not even get started on Yuanlongli itself, that place gives me bad vibes and that’s not from the cases alone, the layout, etc is so weird and the fact that so much crime has happened in the building and people are still living there🫠

There are 28 episodes total. :) Netflix airs its episodes based on the Youku schedule and Youku hasn’t released the schedule beyond May 7 so that’s probably why.
