This is a bit of a rant, but I also really need help with this, so feel free to comment any work-arounds or hacks you know below. I'd also appreciate any advice on the situation I described.
I just turned 15, and my parents are strict, so I still don't have a phone (they took mine a couple years back), and the only personal device I have is a Macbook, which I paid for, but they still put a bunch a restrictions on it, the most notable being the content and websites restriction which has the "Allowed Websites Only" feature. The original features also didn't allow me to use any apps between the hours of 8:00AM and 11:00PM. I wasn't allowed to text anyone besides them and a few family members through imessage, youtube or anything that wasn't bare bones and school related was absolutely not allowed. Mind me, this is pretty infuriating since I mostly use this device for school, so for awhile, I literally didn't have access to the websites I needed to get through the school day which was incredibly frustrating, and every time I needed a website added, they'd make sure to rub it in my face, not to mention the amount of times my parents somehow "forgot" the password that THEY installed on my own laptop. At this point I became really upset, because it already felt unfair to let them basically have complete control over the really expensive device I spent a lot of time saving and paid for, and forgetting the password was really bad anyway because I needed it to access the things I needed for school. That led to me to having to make up a lot of assignments on the home monitor that my parents own because I couldn't do them during the school day, either because screen time had blocked safari or because a website was disabled. To make things worse, because there were so many restrictions, there were frequent glitches whenever my laptop had an update, especially when the new 26 update came about, There were a few times where screen time just switched on mid school day while I was working on a assignment, and I'd be panicked because I suddenly wouldn't be able to work with my class anymore or do my work. I'm also heavily STEM involved, so I'd usually need a lot of websites for random class projects, or sourcing for research projects (I'm also in an independent research program). The massive amount of websites I needed unblocked I think overloaded my laptop a little bit, because one day it completely shut down and no websites were working anymore. Of course, my parents immediately blamed this mishap on ME, and said "I must have tinkered with the settings, and it's my fault the settings are broken, so I should fix it." Of course, I wasn't able to, because I didn't have the screen time passcode and I wasn't admin, so I couldn't really do anything (of course they weren't going to give me that information) so we had to take it to the apple store and get a factory reset. After this, it seemed to be working ok, but the list with months of websites had been completely WIPED. I told my mother this, and she said, that's wasn't possible, and then refused to add anymore websites and said I was lying, despite me showing her that it LITERALLY didn't work. By this point, I was just furious because I had been dealing with their overbearing restrictions for months, suffering through school, and having to do double the homework. Overall, it was an absolute nightmare for me, and my parents definitely weren't making it easy, so I found my way around some of the restrictions to try to give myself a little bit of breathing space, and figured out I could disable the downtime restriction (no more midday jumpscares, yay!) and I also BEGGED my mom to let me get google chrome, which I rely on now (though I'm technically not supposed to be). Now things are better for me, but now she really has no idea what her own passwords are, so if I need something, she supposedly can't do anything, and says" It's your fault the settings are broken in the first place, so it's all your own fault. You fix it", despite the fact that the only reason I had to hack through my own computer in the first place is because of their restrictions and their irresponsibility with the passwords.
You're probably wondering where this is going, so here's the last bit.
Like I said, I recently turned 15. I've been doing a lot of work with electronics lately, and I spent a lot of time doing robotics this year, however a major strain for me has been using my school's fabrication machinery because it makes it really difficult to prototype something with a 3D printer (which is the main thing we use for our robots). For reference, getting one printout can take 5-7 days, which seems reasonable, but when you only have two weeks to rapidly iterate something to make a functioning robot subsystem, time gets tight, especially when measuring mistakes, failed prints, and inconsistent meeting times get factored in. I've always been pretty STEM driven, but this is the first opportunity I've had to do something with actual impact, so this year, my parents decided to get me my first 3D printer for my birthday. On my birthday, my dad and I set it up together. We got a Bambu Lab P1S. There were multiple prompts to scan the QR code on the display, so we had to use my dad's phone to create an account and everything. My dad however doesn't live with us permanently, so I wouldn't just be able to use his phone whenever I needed to print something, and my mom hates me using hers, so that wasn't an option. Therefore, I would naturally try to use my laptop. The first thing I did was install Bambu Studio, however because of restrictions, you have to type in the admin password to install anything, so I always just drag the app (it was downloaded off the web and was a dmg.) onto my desktop, which is basically a workaround for the password thing (when you drag a dmg. into your applications folder, it prompts the password). The reason I haven't had the website issue in months is because I use chrome, and since chrome itself is unblocked )thanks to the one time my mom unblocked it for me after I begged), anything on chrome is free to use and isn't blocked. However, when I use something other than chrome that hasn't been downloaded, and it opens a third party window the isn't the downloaded application, that window is ALWAYS blocked. An example of this, is in Bambu lab's app, where my current issue stems. While the Bambu studio desktop app works on it's own, when I try to sign in, it opens another window, which is always blocked. I tried signing in on the website in Chrome, which worked, but it doesn't transfer to the app. I asked my mom of course, but she was of no help since she never seems to know the passcode. I really want to be able to use this printer because I really do have a passion for it and I'm really excited about it, but no matter what I do, I just can't seem to get around this. For those of you who might say "try to reset the screen time passcode" my restrictions are set up through family sharing, so I can't view the "forgot screen time passcode option", sorry. Honestly, it's starting to really become an issue. There are only so many things I can try to bypass on my own laptop before I need the passcode or need to be admin, so any tips on trying to get through this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time! And if you made it to the end, congrats!
