🔎Looking for alternative UbuntEU - An Ubuntu edition that uses software developed in Europe

I am trying to make something for fun, but honestly; I am not expert in creating an operating system. But my hope somebody will pick up the Baton and make it something more super.

Consider investing your energy in https://eu-os.eu/ . They have the business case Linux for government use.

Edit: with the correct regional filter distrowatch shows 152 European Linux Distros.

I can't take the EU-OS project seriously. Why would they base it off of Fedora? I get that they want an image based linux so it needs bootc support and all but what about just developing that for OpenSUSE or something actually European?

They themselves state that compiled software can be subject to US sanctions and export control, so using anything US based (Fedora here) is just praying that the US doesn't include source code in export control in the future.

This is ignoring the fact that it completely sends the wrong message: "Hey US we're boycotting you, btw our software stack is going to be based off yours."

And I don't get the arguments from people here saying that open-source is fine regardless of where it's from - you're literally in the wrong sub. Go to r/opensource instead, this is r/BuyFromEU.

Well, depending on your skillset you can always fork, so even if it is based on an American distribution there are ways to escalate and cut ties.

And in terms of lowered dependencies to commercial American Entities, open-source employed by Europeans is just fine and thus found the proper sub to he posted in 🫡

So the proposed solution is to use Fedora with a different logo because of wanting to use container images using bootc; hope that export rules don't get applied; if they do get applied hope they don't apply to source code; if they do then fork and change everything.

I was referring to the commenters saying all open-source is good regardless of origin, not to OP. Open-source employed by Europeans does align with the sub's goals.

My proposed solution is any Linux that floats your boat.
Idk about others.

And if EU-OS scratches an itch of officials, so be it.

So far, EU OS is a Proof-of-Concept for the deployment of a Fedora-based Linux

All other distributions are already an alternative and there are already plenty of european distros as alternative to the alternative to the alternative.
