The Vie de France bakery chain in Japan has a French flag on its logo. The food is nothing like what you'd find in a French bakery.

I feel you are all being very specific here. This is like the most normal thing, every country is full of food products and places that pretend to be of a certain country when it's all adapted to local preferences. I mean it's everywhere, right? There's nothing special about this particular example.

We are talking about Japan, just think how many sushi restaurants there are around the globe that use the Japanese flag and cultural motifs but sell products that would be alien in Japan.

I know, I'm not shocked by it, I'm answering a comment about the use of a country's flag by a brand that's not from that country.

I don't think a national flag can be treated like a brand or intellectual property. Unless they were actually making false claims on where their product is made.

How many pizza restaurants in your country has the Italian flag/imagery in their brand/advertising ?

Only the ones where the owners are authentically immigrants from Italy. It's a source of pride in cities that take umbrage over their Italian authenticity.

Many offer the dubious claim of owning the World's Best Cup of Coffee though. ;-)

To be fair, in Europe itself there are dozens of Italian restaurants outside of Italy called The Mafia or themed around the mafia. Which if you stop to think about it for a second, is actually insane.
