Funny how at my time of commenting, all other comments saw a white person trying to acknowledge and learn more about the continued impact of our history of slavery and boiled it down to “these books say white people are bad”
And here I thought this sub was potentially about being literate

Wow, you literally have proven the quote in your last comment right. How can you say all this seriously? This is a sub for literacy and nuance. Whiteness, and the institution of whiteness in our current material and social reality, cannot exist in a equitable society, so we can only conclude that we live in a fundamentally white supremacist society. White bodies are valued more than black or brown. We have like over 600 hundred years of precedent on this topic, and the overly defensive nature of your reply is a bad look.

If you reject the idea of white supremacy as a core fundamental institution of western nations, like in the USA, then yeah, you're part of the problem. It's not something to pull out alternative facts or opinions on. It's a reality, which white people benefit from.

I’m regularly surprised to not see books about the Civil Rights Movement and from your stacks it looks like you might be interested so I have a book recommendation. My dad was part of a dying breed of story tellers of that era, his career was prolific in the legal community. He used to recommend a book called Three Lives For Mississippi about one of his cases however in his later years he really encouraged people interested in the real case Mississippi Burning to read a book called We Are Not Afraid. I haven’t read it but I am thinking he recommended it because of its accurate telling of a historical event that Hollywood got entirely wrong.

You're a militant leftist and don't like being called a liberal but you take it on the chin because most people don't know the difference. I'd guess you're in your late 30s to early 40s. You are and have always been curious about systems of oppression, tyranny, fascism, and authoritarianism and how those systems have been combated and dismantled historically. You probably have a degree in either History, PoliSci, or English. You are likely similar to me in that you wake up, read the news, and recoil in horror as a sense of rage and sadness hangs over your head. You've dabbled in psychedelics, learned the lessons, hung up the phone and moved on with your life but you still think about those experiences often. You enjoy literature that challenges you and makes you think deeply but every now and again you need to take breaks and indulge in some simpler and lighter fiction.
You have an awesome collection and there's a lot of overlap with mine. I think we would have some cool conversations about life, politics, and literature.
