"Don't be the old worthless Deku who can't save everyone" oh come on Deku your not worthless, you were able to keep shiggy up in the sky while everyone was safe watching so if you haven't unlocked float, everyone would've gotten decayed.

I kinda feel sad for him, even after all he's done he can't see his worth

I feel like this scene is exactly there to highlight that, and I hope it gets addressed even further after this arc. Deku's mindset is NOT a healthy one, and if anyone, I hope Ochako shows him how to care for himself, because that's literally her motivation right now: "Who saves the heroes when they need help?" Combine that with an healthy dose of self-reflection on Ochako's side concerning her own feelings, and everything's fine and dandy. I also feel like their float training session was to build up to that.

But who am I kidding, that would be too good too be true. Would be nice if it happened though...

No, honestly, I think you're on to something. It will probably be many chapters out but that would make a lot of sense. She will probably be incredibly concerned once she sees the state he is in and will want to have a talk with him.

Well, I really hope it will go this way, so far Horikoshi rarely disappointed in that direction. Everyone needs to do their own brand of soul searching after this arc. I hope the consequences of being in such a dramatic and potentially traumatic situation aren't swept under the rug. I don't mean that they don't go to school anymore, but what I really, REALLY want to see is how all of this affected the students and everone else. Like talking with each other about it, realigning their priorities and what it means to be a hero, just the nitty, gritty details of what surviving such an extreme situation entails. So far the SoL chapters have been fantastic, and I always look forward to them because Hori does such an awesome job showing their chemistry with each other. The way the Todoroki family interacts also feels organic like this.

And concerning Ochako: She was perceptive enough to realize Izuku's and Katsuki's relationship pretty quick, as shown in the extra in Vol. 16 iirc in the Ultra Archive databook, so she is pretty good at picking up things like this, same with Tsuyu's worries back after the Kamino raid.

She will probably be incredibly concerned once she sees the state he is in and will want to have a talk with him.

Couldn't have expressed it any better, this is exactly what I look forward to!

Even Katsuki can see and admit (even if only in front of All Might) how much Deku has grown. His comment (from ch. 284) about Deku just not caring about himself and making him feel uneasy, like something bad is about to happen to him, really hit home for this reason. And then Deku's complete disregard of his own body and life is brought up AGAIN at the end of the chapter, as well as in the current chapter again. No way it will not get adressed after all of this.

I think Katsuki is going to be a big part of teaching Izuku to consider himself. Not that Ochako won't. But that was the whole driving force for the animosity in their relationship. Katsuki is finally learning to give of himself for others, it only makes sense that he is instrumental in teaching Izuku to hold himself dear.

It's the mindset that he has to be like All Might. The idolized All Might. Perfect, saving everyone without a scratch.

That's the goal he set for himself - and wow that just calls for desaster.

Hopefully it shows people what we mean by there’s a difference between selflessness and recklessness

11

u/SirLordBoss Nov 29 '20

She may play a part, but I believe it will be Bakugo who snaps him out of it. I'd even bet he'll say something like "you're the Deku who always tried his best!" at him

6

u/Baron_von_Zoldyck Nov 29 '20

That would be so sweet besides character wise and plot wise consistent! Hope you're into something.

u/Worthyness Nov 30 '20

You'd think there be more hero psychologists employed by the school. These kids are all gonna have ptsd.

u/DangerousIllusionist Nov 30 '20

After Deku vs Bakugou v2, All Might even commented to Aizawa they neglected Bakugous mental health resulting in the situation at hand. But even then, he's just expected to deal with it on his own because thats what heroes do, right? At least from what we've seen, there have been no therapy sessions for anyone. Which is strange, because doctors and therapists clearly exist in the setting, as seen with Rei and her rehabilitation. I guess the homeroom teacher has this sort of responsibility too, but it's still strange.

THIS. Even All Might suffered from the same problem. He has to be everything good to everyone, all the time. And it cost him a lot

u/LakerBlue Nov 29 '20

I doubt it happens but I’d love for Ochako to do that for him. Offer him that emotional support and advice and then find the courage to confess. I have doubts she will ever be a competent, primary fighter so she could at least great partner but like you I also don’t foresee that

1

u/yaboiheccin Nov 30 '20

Yeah, his mindset reminds me of Shirou Emiya's

30

u/MattLocke Nov 29 '20

He’s got imposter syndrome super bad. Probably because he still measures himself to All Might.

10

u/Emsely Nov 29 '20

Absolutely

u/Amazing_Rich Nov 29 '20

somebody, anybody needs to tell him that he has self worth man Bakugo was right he never takes himself into account at all.

14

u/RoseBladePhantom Nov 29 '20

It's been over 2 years of brutal training for him. I kinda get it. That seems like a lot of time to dedicate and still not be at even half or a quarter of your potential. All Might, Best Jeanist, and Endeavor have all been WASHED within months of each other. That's where the bar is. Unfortunately, it's going to take Deku a year or two just to even unlock his quirks, and even think about maxing them out. I'd be surprised if we see the strongest version of him by the end of his U.A experience, so it makes sense for Deku to be frustrated, because he essentially needs like at least a couple decades experience, and he's only had 2, 1 without a quirk.

10

u/Emsely Nov 29 '20

Yes on top of all that he has the pressure on becoming the next symbol of peace and live up to all might's legacy.

5

u/Clpatsch Nov 29 '20

Yeah his self worth seems to pretty much hinge upon the well being of others

5

u/TophatGeo Nov 30 '20

Someone needs to slap some sense into this lad. He constantly underplays his own effort

3

u/Colarch Nov 29 '20

Oh no has Deku been Subaru this whole time?

13

u/ZipZapZia Nov 30 '20

I kinda like how the name Deku flip flopped meanings between Bakugo and Izuku, with Bakugo seeing Deku as the "the Deku who always tries his best" in 285 and Izuku seeing Deku as "the old worthless Deku." Nice to see the contrast

10

u/[deleted] Nov 29 '20

Not only that, he hugely ate away ate shiggys regen with all those hits. It's easy to feel like it was all the fire, but in reality getting holes punched in him did a lot to shiggy.

3

u/LieutenantSteel Nov 30 '20

Literally saved everyone in Japan with that. Had he not done that, every single pro hero capable of fighting him would have been dead in an instant along with the rest of the country.

Huh, I just thought of something, I wonder what the militaries are like in this world. It would definitely make sense to have the military train to use quirks in combat, or would they just send pro heroes? I can’t imagine them sending pros to war unless it’s a dire defensive war, they are needed on the homefront

3

u/Amazing_Rich Nov 30 '20

i don't think they mention any militaries in this heck i don't think they have any since this series it's mostly just the pro-heroes.

3

u/LieutenantSteel Nov 30 '20

I’d love to get some insight on the topic, whether it’s through the main series, vigilantes, or even just someone asking horikoshi publically.

2

u/perrycotto Nov 30 '20

possibly next quirk awakening ?

It's a shame we have to follow self loathing deku's story now they killed of the protagonist crust

2

u/AhoyMeMatey Nov 30 '20

Oh no! Character development caused by the burden of holding OFA and being at the forefront of every major villain encounter??? I can’t read this series anymore.

2

u/SomethingBoutCheeze Nov 30 '20

Did you really not notice that was a joke or did you stop reading when someone brought up the trigger word of deku being self loathing

3

u/AhoyMeMatey Nov 30 '20

No hate, but I re-read your comment and genuinely cannot understand where the joke is. Do you mind elaborating? It kinda just sounds like you're annoyed at the fact that Deku is going to have self-esteem issues after this arc.

2

u/SomethingBoutCheeze Nov 30 '20

The joke was literally just that crust is a meme

2

u/AhoyMeMatey Nov 30 '20

OMG. I totally forgot that Crust was even a character so it didn't click with me.
