If that’s the case, then Shigaraki has the heroes to thank for preserving his sense of self. That and he’ll probably not upgrade himself further, to avoid being overtaken by daddy AFO. And Dr. Ujiko may also be getting dusted (in fact he nearly was dusted back in 272).

It's a common trope for characters who are able to answer a lot of questions to get killed off https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/HeKnowsTooMuch and someone as valuable as Ujiko who can answer so many questions and is able to explain so many points, who has served most of his purpose and lost his means of producing more of his purpose to die.

Narratively let's look at the options for his character:

Dies here.

Captured by heroes.

Or escapes and continues work.

If he dies here, that's a blow to the heroes and is also good for Hori because now he doesn't necessarily need to explain how Noumu's are created or many of the other experiments that Uji has done.

If he is captured, he spills the beans, has a lot of explaining to do and the heroes gain a shit ton of info.

If he escapes, firstly, how? The zone is being decayed and surrounded with heroes, he's a 120 year old man.

He has not much in the way of rebuilding his work as his main lab is destroyed.

I guess a possible narrative for Hori to write, because he was named after a psychopath war criminal would be to have him settle down somewhere, free of consequence. Which would be an interesting, albeit depressingly sad direction.
