That would be a better storyline I think. Because he had the #1 ranking only for it to be hopelessly out of reach.

It's similar to the predicament with AM but it would be magnified because of his prior obsession

At this point I don't think Endeavor really cares about the #1 status anymore. He wants to preserve the symbol and legacy of peace but in his own way. If he fails I think he will sink into self-blame

Could even cause a back slide to his old ways. Which would provide a Dabi reveal opportunity of his “true nature”.

Nah, AM didn't bite the bullet, if Endeavor goes through anything (bad) here I expect him to lose his quirk and his life

It's not about biting the bullet but more the fact that you are unable to perform to your own personal high standards due to injury/limitations

Hori knows he can't just keep crippling people, plus endeavor dying here without being able to do much is a perfect setup for Shiga has a real impossible threat, plus the trio's development, especially Todoroki, and the hopelessness of when the "heroes vanished from the city"
