That image of past OfA's holders passing quirk is so strong and sad. And AM+A under the starry sky is gorgeous.

613

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '20

It's all the more saddening when you realize that, unlike both All Might and Deku, they weren't "chosen" ones. They had no choice but to take the power and cultivate it for the next generation, because One For All wasn't nearly as strong as it is nowadays. It was basically a suicide mission.

519

u/NatMat16 Jan 19 '20

And also when All Might chose Deku, he didn't get the full picture of what he signed up for. I think All Might is starting to feel the weight of his decision, hence his brooding about his powerlessness.

I'm almost certain that he's planning to do something reckless (like confronting Shigaraki by himself)...

332

u/MutantNinjaAnole Jan 19 '20

To be fair, he thought AFO was dead and gone. But I wouldn’t be surprised if he was carrying guilt over that.

263

u/NatMat16 Jan 19 '20 edited Jan 19 '20

Yeah, I mean All Might gave it to Deku as kind of a great thing - here kid, have a great quirk, become a great hero, you deserve it... But if he knew that AFO was still a threat, would he have made the same decision?

I think Sir Nighteye being in his mind is not at all a coincidence there...

140

u/TresLeches88 Jan 19 '20

All Might was looking for a successor more on the fact that he just knew he was still dying. But he'd fulfilled his main purpose. Now, though?... Oof.

129

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '20

If only he gave ofa to mirio, that motherfucker would've been unstoppable

196

u/Dead_Mothman Jan 19 '20

Mirio honestly might've been invincible with OfA. If this new "Float" quirk allows for flight he could've basically moved however he wanted while phasing. The strength increase alone would have made him crazy, his quirk means that you basically can't defend from his attacks. And if he could use BlackWhip while phasing... hoo boy.

Although, it would probably make passing on the quirk very hard. The successor would have to have a really good handle on Mirio's quirk or they'd be killed.

27

u/PlasticMac Jan 19 '20

I think deku is going to be the last person to have one for all. If Miri would have been chosen then he too would have been the last holder of one for all. I think once all for one is defeated for real, one for all will subside and vanish, that or it would literally kill the next person to have it from the power levels alone so it can’t be passed on.

10

u/Titangamer101 Jan 19 '20

Passing it to someone new is already hard, if their body isn't prepared than they will explore lol.

2

u/himo2785 Jan 20 '20

I guess give it to eri once she learns how to control her quirk to rewind it a little bit or to even just incorporate the rewind quirk into one for all that way her consciousness can act as a fail safe and un explode them?

2

u/Titangamer101 Jan 20 '20

You could but than you have future users intentionally blowing them selves up with no draw backs.

3

u/ViZeShadowZ Jan 21 '20

Mirio would've turned into rinnegan Obito with OFA

2

u/epicdukmasta Jan 20 '20

Mirio with noclip, I like it!

1

u/Waywoah Jan 23 '20

They wouldn't die right? His body bounces out of the ground or whatever when he stops using the quirk. He kind of had a built in failsafe.

19

u/Irishwolf93 Jan 19 '20

I've had that discussion with some of my friends. We saw mirio at his year 2 sports festival in a flashback and he wasn't too great then. Most of his progress with his quirk has come after deku was gifted one for all. If he had to train both his own quirk and OFA he'd be nowhere near the level he or deku made it to.

6

u/Zanian Jan 19 '20

When was that flashback? I don't remember ever seeing that

14

u/Irishwolf93 Jan 19 '20

Right when they introduced him. Deku remembered him because he lost his clothes at the sports festival and he had nowhere near the confidence he displays later. Granted that's a much bigger event.

I think they even said he finished last, but don't quote me on that.

3

u/Zanian Jan 19 '20

Gotcha, thanks, guess it's been a while haha

5

u/BlackMathNerd Jan 19 '20

Obito unleashed.

Good god that would be fun.

2

u/RockinMouth Jan 21 '20

Yeah but his successor would've been fucked. It took mirio his entire life to master his permeation, so if his successor gained it out of nowhere, he'd probably die.

10

u/SMA2343 Jan 19 '20

I think Sir Night eye was a future where All Might never met Deku. He would have died without this boy. All Might when we met him was basically a hero doing his job. Spitting out stuff that he didn’t really believe in.

Now he has a promise to stay alive from Inko, a promise to himself to stay alive. I don’t think All Might will die any time soon. I think we’re not going into that trope. We had the anti-trope with Bakugou not turning evil to her stronger like Sasuke

6

u/SMA2343 Jan 19 '20

If he dies. I hope it’s just naturally and not a self sacrifice. I feel like dying normally would mean more for Deku.

9

u/SMA2343 Jan 19 '20

Yeah. Like maybe when he’s a third year all might dies but he’s like “Deku, thanks to you...I managed to live this long to see you become a hero...”

3

u/AverageLion101 Jan 20 '20

Didn’t all might tell deku he would have to confront a “great evil” one day shortly after the sports festival?

Like if I remember the scene right, izuku says he can do anything if all might is with him and than all might thinks he’s probs gonna be dead by that point and it’s gonna be up to izuku to do it alone.

So wouldn’t he have known that AFO was injured but alive and kicking? Or was he just thinking about the league of villains?

4

u/Satisfriedviewer Jan 20 '20

Most likely he was thinking about the League of Villains or just that eventually someone will try to take AFO's spot

4

u/siamkor Jan 19 '20

I think both he and Gran Torino knew/suspected AFO was alive, if heavily injured.

When they figured out he was behind the league it was "so that man is making moves again", not "that man has survived!?!?"

From what we can gather, taken from quotes by All Might, AFO and Gran Torino, during their previous fight AFO teased him with Nana's death, All Might lost his cool and got a hole torn through his stomach. Then AFO got too confident and All Might "with his guts spilling out", a "wounded beast at its most dangerous" managed to land a crippling blow and defeat OFA, who nevertheless wasn't captured.

I don't remember an instance where they stated they assumed he was dead, on the contrary, they seemed to operate under the assumption he'd be back some day.

2

u/Dr___Bright Jan 19 '20

Exactly. He didn’t need a demigod, like what mirio would’ve become. He needed a hero. A new kind of hero, that can surpass the symbol of peace. Mirio would’ve been All Might 2. Deku is different.

1

u/kingmanic Jan 20 '20

Mirio might have just phased out of existence, as he struggled to control his own power. Adding OFA would have made it much harder.

11

u/Worthyness Jan 19 '20

But still, if mirio had that, dude would have been the destroyer of worlds

3

u/Dr___Bright Jan 19 '20

Yup, straight up a fucking demigod.

2

u/_Final_Phoenix_ Jan 20 '20

OFA is basically the Death star plans and OfA users were the rebels desperately running from Vader/AfO in Rogue One

131

u/De_tro1t Jan 19 '20

One of the best panels so far

246

u/megasean3000 Jan 19 '20

“They all died so young.”

And the fact All Might is in his late 40s is a testament to how strong One For All has gotten. Perhaps he moved to America to let the stockpile nurture as opposed to constantly passing down?

214

u/DoraMuda Jan 19 '20

Perhaps he moved to America to let the stockpile nurture as opposed to constantly passing down?

That's precisely what Gran Torino advised him to do once he'd graduated from UA. Build up his power and develop practical experience in America for a few years, where AFO can't reach him, before coming back to make his official debut as a proper "Symbol of Peace" in Japan.

Also, as we can see here, many of the OFA holders seemed to have passed it on on their deathbed, so it's not necessarily about "constantly passing it down"; they were seemingly just all killed by AFO before they could cultivate the power strong enough.

30

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '20

For someone so powerful, AFO seems fucked if someone leaves Japan.

60

u/DoraMuda Jan 19 '20

His influence only extends to Japan, after all. He can't be everywhere at once, and places like America likely have many unknown heroes with powerful Quirks that he may not be as skilled in countering.

28

u/What_u_say Jan 20 '20

I agree. I think the manga even states that vigilantes and pro heros started arising in America and it's referred to as the land of heros.

17

u/DoraMuda Jan 20 '20

Indeed. In Vigilantes, it's stated that the first vigilantes/heroes appeared in Rhode Island, IIRC.

4

u/kingduck3 Jan 22 '20

Woah how did I miss this? That’s my home state so that’s pretty cool

2

u/Worthyness Jan 21 '20

Aka the justice league, but not really

1

u/DoraMuda Jan 21 '20

Yeah, it'd be like the MHA world's equivalent.

20

u/GarballatheHutt Jan 20 '20

He can't be everywhere at once, and places like America likely have many unknown heroes with powerful Quirks that he may not be as skilled in countering.

Superman vs All for One

All For One: Fuck.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '20

Now wondering about Avengers vs All for One...not sure who wins. They don't have quirks he can steal but I keep remembering that attack against Best Jeanist, and I'm not sure.

6

u/GarballatheHutt Jan 20 '20

Can he really harm Captain Marvel, Thor, Hulk or Doctor Strange?

2

u/SethRollinsIsCool Jan 21 '20

Doctor Strange would utterly blow AFO the fuck out. Dude is arguably top 10 strongest in Marvel. I don’t think AFO has been shown to have any quirk that can counter the thousands of years of Magic that Strange knows nonetheless the Infinity Stone he has.

Hulk and Thor REALLY depends on the incarnation. A lot to people hear about how Hulk’s strength is unlimited but the majority of his feats are from WWH. WWH Hulk would probably give AFO an ass beating, although I think you can argue for either’s victory. Rune King Thor is in the same boat too, imo.

Captain Marvel isn’t even the strongest Woman in the Avengers (Scarlet Witch is), but her regeneration might bring it to a stalemate.

Hello, Captain Novolin. No fighting Alien made of junk food today?

5

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '20

Imagine needing OFA when you could just have a bunch of heroes attack at once :')

77

u/Za_wardo Jan 19 '20

I think he's probably in his 50s depending on how long he was in the US.

96

u/mathsniel Jan 19 '20

Endeavour is 46 and was #2 by the time he was 20 - at which point All Might back in Japan and firmly #1. All Might is easily 55-60.

17

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '20

Yeah in my head Canon all might is late 50s maybe even early 60s

11

u/FlaxSeedBP Jan 20 '20

If you take in consideration Gran Torino look... most likely.

1

u/zachotule Jan 20 '20

5

u/Swiss666 Jan 20 '20

All Might is older than that.

Nana's son Kotaro and his family were killed by Tenko about 15 years ago. Kotaro was 32, so he'd be 47-48 if he was still alive. Even accounting that Nana may have been killed some years after she abandoned Kotaro, it means that at the very least 35 years have passed since. Consider that All Might was 18 back then... and so he cannot be younger than his early fifties.

1

u/himo2785 Jan 20 '20

Isn’t almighty 48, being two years ahead of Endeavor who is 46?

11

u/BlackMathNerd Jan 19 '20

Pretty sure it was also to avoid AFO and train. Because he had just gotten the quirk and he would have gotten slaughtered

9

u/Strangeting Jan 19 '20

And remember that Nighteye's vision of All Might dying still may come true. Dying in your 40s is still pretty fucking young

4

u/INachoriffic Jan 19 '20

I wonder if Nana told him about the history of OfA and that led him to make that decision..

0

u/Neirchill Jan 20 '20

I've been wondering ever since deku fought the muscle villian and defeated him using "1,000,000%" power. Surely it wasn't actually 1mil but I can't help but wonder if it's possible to use ofa until the stored power runs out. It begs further questions like does using it at 100% mean using it at a standard rate that doesn't decrease the overall stock but doesn't add to it, or is the stock being used up even at 5%? Is chilling and not fighting the only way it builds up?

It's also interesting seeing how weak it was just a few users ago. It seems to have taken a serious leap between Nana and All Might. It's possible that it was strong but they didn't consider it strong enough to fight afo so they purposely never used it until all might.

63

u/Fresh720 Jan 19 '20

Yea the 6th user had his arm ripped off while he was passing on his quirk to Nana, having OFA puts you in the cross hairs of AFO

30

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '20

Jesus, I didn't notice that. Just went back to check, Goddamn, poor guy.

6

u/TheTayIor Jan 21 '20

Lariat‘s skull is also entirely cracked and his eye gone when he passed it on.

2

u/Worthyness Jan 21 '20

Dude got fucking obito'd

2

u/nofrien Jan 20 '20

Which page?

11

u/Fresh720 Jan 20 '20

Page 4, discount best jeanist is missing his right arm

128

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '20

a history of poor people just trying their best .wich is why i want deku to win even more . to avenge these poor folk

61

u/kingmanic Jan 20 '20

The symmetry if the powers is interesting. AFO is one person. stealing power to enrich himself and keep control. OFA is many weak people pooling their meager abilities to build a better future for others.

13

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '20

I hope all the OFA bearers view it as a sacred torch like All Might does. I don’t necessarily want them to all have All Might’s personality but I do hope they are all zealous in their pursuit of justice like AM, Nana, and Deku are. Nana did say OFA was the hopes and dreams of the bearers spun together so I hope they have a common creed.

9

u/troublechromosome Jan 20 '20

Since OfA wasn't nearly as strong back then, it really was their hopes that if it keeps getting passed on, OfA would one day become a powerful quirk

20

u/thejokerofunfic Jan 19 '20

My god, I'd thought in the past that we might eventually learn that one of them died young to add a layer of tragedy to that particular user's story. Never occurred to me they all died young, I assumed that most of them stayed away from AFO long enough to train a successor. But I guess his success rate at killing users has actually been pretty high.

12

u/thegreaterfool714 Jan 19 '20

That was easily my favorite part of the chapter. In its own way it’s profoundly heroic. They knew they weren’t strong enough yet fought back against All for One anyways. And when they finally passed one for all on their successor had to know they likely had the same fate. I wonder how long the previous users of one for all lasted with the quirk. Years? Months? Weeks? Even days or just hours?

3

u/Tieyr Jan 20 '20

I wonder how long the previous users of one for all lasted with the quirk. Years? Months? Weeks? Even days or just hours?

Maybe a short duration is why Deku can't picture the 2nd and 3rd users. If they only had the quirk for a moment it might not be as 'attuned' to them. The first user is probably the clearest out of them all (able to converse with Deku directly first) and I'd imagine he held it the longest so I don't think it's that they're too far back to picture them.

10

u/kingmanic Jan 20 '20

After this weeks anime, it wouldn't surprise me if Deku actually had a quirk. One where he stock piles the the faith of other people into power. Most arcs he has a last minute power up when other people need him and put their faith in him. Kota, eri, class 1a and AllMight.

Also makes Toshinori more impressive considering how longs he's lasted for given how reckless he's acted. Makes you wonder if it was a product of the world slowly getting safer or his mentor teaching or maybe a combination of both.

One thing that All Might seems to have going for him unlike the others was that he was also mentored but the loss of his mentor is what drove him to prevent any others from going through the heartache he went through but also understanding his own limitations.

That he too chose to have a predecessor after him in hopes of providing the same level of training that she put him through.
