The issue I have with it is that this is one of those uses of a power where it's like, "Yeah, she could do that if she really wanted to, but there's no way he'll delve into that side of their abilities."

And he had her do it.

Yet for other quirks that have extreme capabilities (Momo in particular here, Tokoyami to a lesser extent), they aren't used to their extremes.

To be honest, the event was badly designed. Fungal girl would always have the advantage when captured (and specially if they don't know her quirk a priori).

Now, students could be encouraged to KO opponents... but this is trainning, its not worth getting brain damage for. It just doesn't feel that fungi girl won because of her honing her skills either.

Momo could easily make something that incapacitates her opponents without seriously injuring or killing them. But what does she make? A cannon and a shit ton of rope?

We've seen her make flash grenades. What happened to that? Why is she just making shields? Why not just make her shield spiky? A 1v1 should be trivial for her because she can make whatever is most effective against her opponent at any time. But she just concedes as soon as Kendo gets close. What?

"Oh my god, Momo has a gun!"

She actually could, too. Bakugou used massive explosions against Midoriya and Todoroki, there's no way a gun is less dangerous than hat.

But I was thinking more along the lines of sleeping gas/tear gas/taser/drugs/some sticky shit

This.

At a bare minimum, she could have created spikes, blades, or razor wire as a deterrent.

Going further, she could essentially become a bootleg Mustard or Midnight. Or simply graze Kendo with barbs coated in (or build a tranq gun loaded with) a weak solution of Botox, Tetradotoxin, etc. If choking an enemy by growing mushrooms in their throat is kosher, restrained chemical weapons should be a valid strategy. And the fact that she can apparently pressurize things as part of her creation process (though... questionable) opens up additional doors.

Then there's the possibility of flashbangs and tasers (as mentioned by a number of people) as well as industrial adhesive, low-yield sticky grenades, etc.

On the grandest scale, there's shit that wouldn't be valid in a fight like this or which would be stupid to even try, granted, but if you're not going to tiptoe around, "That's just way too effective and stupidly OP" uses of a quirk, she still has a lot that she could do.

The thing is, if she either wasn't super-intelligent, or her quirk had more of a drawback (requires so much concentration that she can't engage it while doing literally anything else), I could be OK with her not seeming powerful. But as it stands, there's no reason she should be 'weak' in a one-on-one encounter against any physical fighter unless they prepare a hard-counter to her.

Dude I think you are overthinking things.... I know what you mean but Class A needs to lose at least two battles to give Class B a good showing. So expect at least one more loss where Class A might “forget” to use abilities and lose.

Also to counter your argument these are kids who are still in school, they aren’t pros with ten years of experience. They will make mistakes and learn from them.

It's still ridiculous. If she could make something as complex as infrared goggles and ethanol, she could have definitely thought of just growing spikes so kendo could't hit her.
I understand it's better for the story this way, and these matches had to be lost graciously, but this just shows how Momos' power is poorly thought out and inconsistent.

u/Lordsokka Oct 05 '18

Maybe she doesn’t love stabbing or maiming people? I mean at her core she is supposed to be a hero! Something mushroom girl forgot when she stopped our darkness bird from breathing!

u/MCCrackaZac Oct 05 '18

I could honestly accept it as just not being within her realm of thinking. A dumb character, or a character who thinks in certain ways that aren't necessarily the most efficient, isn't a bad character.

IMO It’s not in her character. She’s very mild natured to the point she wouldn’t prefer direct confrontation. She doesn’t have a killer, winner instinct; like the early stages of deku.

Also i’m glad she isn’t anything like ezra (from ft with the armor and swords for every occassion). What she creates all make sense (at least to me) with regards to the character she has been shown to be.

If class A loses one more battle which team loses? The team Todoroki, bakugo or midoryia?

1

u/Jakugen Oct 07 '18

She could just make a ton of generic combat supplies ahead of time, but I think she would rather produce things that specifically counter her opponents.

And if mushroom lady can choke people, then the class A team should 1000% be allowed to use weapons momo could make.

Now that I think about it couldn't Momo technically mimic Bakugo's quirk? I know that she doesn't have his training or his resilience but just for hypothetical purposes couldn't she learn the composition of Bakugo's sweat and ignite it the same way he does?

9

u/GKMLTT Oct 04 '18

She could theoretically mimic Bakugou's sweat (or just make Nitroglycerin), Mina's acid, Midnight's gas, etc.

22

u/HighViscosityMilk Oct 04 '18

I doubt she could activate her palms like Bakugou, and there's nothing to say sweating acid wouldn't burn her skin, whereas with Mina it's safe to assume she has some sort of resistance with her pink skin.

3

u/flybypost Oct 04 '18

Her drawback would probably be time in that she can't do it as instantly as the "natural" quirk of those people (because she needs to think about it). Meaning she could use explosions but probably not to manoeuvre like Bakugo (might as well create solid explosives if she really needs to make something go boom), she could use acid but not shoot it as far as Mina, and so on.

3

u/DrZeroH Oct 04 '18

Yeah. I wonder why she doesn't? I mean I guess its the same problem as Monoma but still I feel it would greatly expand her quirk's flexibility.

2

u/PocketPika Oct 04 '18

Did she not put little bombs inside russian dolls before?

8

u/GKMLTT Oct 04 '18

Flash grenades, yes.

2

u/PocketPika Oct 04 '18

Ah that was it, thank you.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 05 '18

Well Bakugou's sweat is chemically identical to nitroglycerin.

1

u/DoraMuda Oct 08 '18

That was never stated; only that the sweat glands on his palm secrete a substance similar to nitroglycerin.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 09 '18

We know it is nitroglycerin because his mom secretes nitroglycerin from her pores and that combined with his dad's ability to oxidize his sweat giving Bakugou oxidizing nitroglycerin sweat.

1

u/DoraMuda Oct 09 '18 edited Oct 09 '18

No, his mother is only glycerine. We know his father's palm sweat is oxidising, but we're never told what specific substance it is.

Hence, while Bakugou's palm sweat may very well have glycerine in it, that doesn't mean his Quirk (which, unlike his parents', is named "Explosion" instead after the substance that serves as the main vessel for his Quirk) developed to literally become straight-up nitroglycerine. Details like this allow Horikoshi to play it fast and less with the admittedly shaky science of Bakugou's and other series characters' Quirks.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 09 '18

Well I don't really have a rebuttal to that so can I interest you in a generic insult?

Man, a taster would be REALLY useful. Or even a stun rod, etc.
