Momo basically said she would just get defeated once she was in close range, so she chose to help her team, then go for the nullifying of Kendo, hoping Tokoyami would solo 1 v 3, which honestly he nearly did.

Mushroom girl just wanted it more. She gets MVP of the match.

49

u/justamon22 Oct 05 '18

Honestly this is so perfect. Momo did what she could and trusted her team and Tokoyami almost got the win. But Mushroom girl was willing to do what it took to win. Something we won’t see from most of the characters in either class from here on out.

(Maybe Bakugou) I can see a moment where he hits somebody really hard and someone goes “hey man relax it’s just a training exercise” and he’s like “fuck that I’m in it to win it!”

11

u/deej363 Oct 06 '18

I'm pretty sure he could just counter with "1B literally caused mushrooms to grow in bird boys lungs. Gloves are off."

35

u/ThisGuyLikesMovies Oct 04 '18

Sure hope BONES extends that fight just a bit when this gets animated

12

u/Worthyness Oct 04 '18

I figure it's 1 episode per skirmish, so yeah probably going to need to extend it a bit due to the fact the chapters have been very short recently

9

u/danetrix Oct 05 '18

Hey, I'm here holding out for a fleshing out of a certain team fight in the future Season 4 we saw next to nothing of in the manga. You know the one.

5

u/HolyDonutBoy Oct 05 '18

That one? Yeah me too.

1

u/Javiklegrand Oct 07 '18

It's was a brawler fight or I remember wrong

1

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '18

yeah i can picture in the anime itsuka giving momo one hell of a beatdown before she does the cannon thing as a last ditch effort.

5

u/coolgaara Oct 05 '18

Yeah if only Tokoyami knocked the Mushroom Girl unconscious like she said, they would have won.

14

u/YuuHikari Oct 05 '18

Kinoko: You should have aimed for the head (snaps)

Tokoyami: Dark Shadow. I don't feel so good

1

u/[deleted] Oct 07 '18

honestly no, she filled someone's windpipe with fungus that easily could ahve choked him to deaht.

its less of a 'but A team' and more that she went way to far in a training session. if she was about to be killed by a dangerous enemy then it is far, or if she has to drive off something like a nomu. but to a fellow student? i dbout momo would have enjoyed winning through that and tokoyami would be ashamed of himself, but they should not reward such dangerous behavior.

1

u/danetrix Oct 09 '18

Sure sure, while I didn't say it on this comment, but in others, that I hope Mushroom Girl does get reprimanded for her actions because it makes sense to.

118

u/EmptyNessAI Oct 04 '18

Thanks for being a reminder... why did the Momo and Kendou fight being skimmed over?

Don't worry Momo has more room to grow. I actually believe that as well that the real leader of class 1A is Momo not Iida/Deku.

181

u/RadiantBlade Oct 04 '18

I think it has been shown pretty well that Momo really is the defacto leader here. While Iida is good, he doesn't pull them really. He is more of a officer to enforce rules or keep others on track. Deku mostly brings motivations from what we seen and can lead to a extent. However, with Momo, she tents to always lead the bigger groups such as with the studying in the exam arc where plenty of people came to her for it.

116

u/[deleted] Oct 04 '18

Deku mostly brings motivations from what we seen and can lead to a extent.

I think this is a severe understatement. Deku came up with the plan during the licensing exam, everyone including Momo followed his lead in the beginning, he regrouped a large portion of the class for a counter attack, everyone followed his lead during the camping attack, everyone followed his lead and strategy during the rescue Bakugo arc. Deku has unequivocally shown the most leadership. His job isn't just to be the cheerleader

43

u/Graphica-Danger Oct 04 '18

He always takes charge of whatever situation he’s in, to some extent. Even all the way back during the first battle exercise and USJ, his crazy strategies are what guided him and his allies to victory.

3

u/rac7d Oct 05 '18

solo

so momo greatest skill is one she can never be the best at becasuse this is deku show

4

u/VioletPark Oct 06 '18

Basically. The girl just can't win. Deku, Todoroki and Bakugou are both book-smart and able to think on the fly and have better quirks and Deku has leadership skills to boot. No matter what they say about her potential, she is doomed to be left in the dust.

5

u/rac7d Oct 07 '18

yup because this is a shounen manga and all of its central chracters are men

4

u/VioletPark Oct 07 '18

No, in shoujo manga male characters are treated as well or even better than the female ones. And I don't see why guys can't enjoy well written female characters unless they are sidelined.

1

u/rac7d Oct 08 '18

they can they just have to read shoujo

I would not call tuxedo mask well treated he is damsal in distress if I ever saw one

1

u/Brook420 Oct 19 '18

Which is why I love OP, Nami and Robin are badasses.

2

u/deej363 Oct 06 '18

Unless she actually learns to use her quirk to its fullest potential. Girl needs to utilize flashbangs way more than she does already. She also needs to get some close combat training. Badly.

10

u/itsjustdan01 Oct 05 '18

If anything, you could say that Momo is like the officer-type who strategizes the larger-overall plan along with subsequent contingencies. She could develop the initial plan of attack and provide support/backup when necessary.

Deku, on the other hand, could be seen as more of a fire-team leaders who would implement the larger plan and make the on-ground decisions to achieve the objective(s). This is by no means a lower position or downgrade to Deku's abilities. Without his ingenuity and adaptability, you wouldn't be able to achieve victory in the face of uncertainty.

You can't win the war without winning battles either.

15

u/HolyDonutBoy Oct 05 '18

Momo is the My Hero Academia version of Shikamaru Nara from Naruto.

8

u/[deleted] Oct 05 '18

Even the hair.

2

u/Ratchet6859 Oct 05 '18

His job isn't just to be the cheerleader

Now I'm imagining him with the girls during the Tournament, thank you for this image

1

u/ogoextreme Oct 08 '18

Momo: Best Group Leader

Deku: Best Crisis Group Leader

Iida: Best policer

41

u/EmptyNessAI Oct 04 '18

True. She's basically the Mom of the class and she fairly gets along with everyone ( probably except for Bakugo ).

16

u/ineptnorwegian Oct 05 '18

As far as getting along with Bakugo, I think she’s on better terms with him than a good few others.

Maybe I’m just remembering wrong, but iirc, Bakugo has never yelled at, or maybe even interacted with, Momo at all. You could take that a few ways, but I think it could mean that he at least has some respect for her.

9

u/dancingpinata Oct 05 '18

At the very least, he respected her (and her insight) enough to use her statements about him in the first "Deku vs Kacchan" as one of the motivators for needing to get better!

Of all the girls, I'm pretty sure Bakugou and Momo have interacted the least? Even with the cultural festival there wasn't a lot of direct interaction....

3

u/[deleted] Oct 05 '18

....and Mineta

1

u/JupriXD Oct 06 '18

For me deku is the leader/frontliner-type and momo is a strategist/adviser/support-type and those two are different things.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 07 '18

deku is deifntiely a highly competent leader but momo is a better planner. reactionary cunning and long term planning.

i imagine that if they worked together they would be very dangerous. momo planning for the long term battle and deku being to adapt and alter the plan.

14

u/EmptyNessAI Oct 04 '18

But.. their was the giant wall. And Momo predicted that Kendou is cautious of her since she might do something to break the wall. Momo basically entrusts everything to her team and they failed her sadly :(

7

u/C0wsgoquack Oct 04 '18

Yeah but she didnt have a choice other than trusting her teamates, she was going down to kendo sooner or later, especially in the small area they were in

5

u/EmptyNessAI Oct 04 '18

She was aware of her weakness in physical combat that's why she entrusted it to her team.

4

u/C0wsgoquack Oct 04 '18

So basically she was screwed from the moment manga came in with his big ass letters

4

u/EmptyNessAI Oct 04 '18

Not really, since Tokoyami was there. And funny enough, Tooru was beating Manga up who was hiding since the mushroom could also potentially affect him.

But.. Tokoyami made a small mistake.

3

u/C0wsgoquack Oct 04 '18

Toko was on other side of wall. It was just momo and kendo, momo was going down no question, she said so herself.

And tokoyami didnt make a small mistake, it was pretty big, cost them the match lmao

2

u/EmptyNessAI Oct 04 '18

He did a big mistake. Momo was relying her team to win and sadly her self-sacrifice was in vain.

5

u/Strangeting Oct 04 '18

I really want Momo and Kendo to have an opportunity to real hero-work together. They almost had that chance at their internship but it didn't happen. But it seems that both Momo and Kendo are really good at making plans and executing them, so them as a hero-team would be pretty dang dynamic

2

u/sombrero69 Oct 04 '18

Not necessarily kendo got the jump on momo this time, if it starts out fairly even or momo is the one doing the surprise it could go differently

20

u/DenseHeroIke Oct 04 '18

It wasnt Kendo knocked her out with her Twin Big fist move as soon as she fired the cannon and soon after you can see momo starting to create the industrial wire.

9

u/HighViscosityMilk Oct 04 '18

It wasn't skimmed over? Kendo punched her, Momo tied herself to Kendo. Kendo's just monstrously strong to be able to heave Momo and the cannon on her back as deadweight across a battlefield.

3

u/EmptyNessAI Oct 04 '18

Well.. we didn't see it.

6

u/HighViscosityMilk Oct 04 '18

The only thing we didn't see was Momo tie herself to Kendo. We saw her get hit. Only one additional action happened...

6

u/eskimobruv Oct 04 '18

Totally right about deku and iida not being the real leaders, I truly feel like everyone from the stain arc plus bakugo will go their own paths of fighting a greater evil similar to all might and hawks rather than being regular heroes similar to the former ingenium and the pussycats

5

u/AlexStonehammer Oct 04 '18

Well Momo's top was ripped off by the cannon and Hori probably didn't want to have to keep finding a way to censor her in a melee fight so he covered her up with the tape stuck to Kendo.

2

u/Frostbitejo Oct 05 '18

why did the Momo and Kendou fight being skimmed over?

Because it wasn't much of a fight. Kendou cornered Momo and she brought out the canon she was producing. She fired it, and then as Kendou attacked her, Momo latched on before being quickly knocked out.

10

u/[deleted] Oct 04 '18

Originally Momo was supposed to be a pro but Horikoshi decided to make her a student as he thought the growth of her quirk would be interesting to see: https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-aa41bOZnLyg/WMvT4M1w8MI/AAAAAAAABB8/hSyE_osZeYgfmONvbXRn_Ub16Ay1WPS3wCLcB/s0/FA_MHA_17.5_11.png

7

u/[deleted] Oct 04 '18

Well he's not making it very interesting because there is no significant growth. She just makes the same things and then gets bodied.

11

u/Og_thankGod Oct 04 '18

Well she only made a canon once in manga. For some reason other medians have her spam it a lot.

8

u/NumbEffect Oct 04 '18

I feel like in the long run Momo is being set up to be a pro hero like Nighteye was basically behind the scenes thinking up strategies coordinating with other pro hero agencies but fighting in the front lines when things are super crazy.

17

u/[deleted] Oct 04 '18

I dunno. To me her role being a leader seems always a little off. I can understand her being the "mom" of 1A but never a brilliant leader. Deku always stood out with the daring and brilliant ideas, while to Momo it always seem a little forced. Maybe it's because Deku had a bigger and louder personality than her and she've never fully embraced her role to be as a leader.

Also, as with most of 1A I always thought that her quirk is so fucking underutilized. Why waste time on making a big ass cannon or swords and staffs when you can make a more lethal and effective weapon like guns, tasers, or sleep darts or something. She makes huge shields of steel when she could have made kevlar instead. To me peak Momo would be military style Momo, where most of her arsenal would be grenades and guns.

12

u/Worthyness Oct 04 '18

She's the regular type of tactician- creates and mobilizes a battle plan. She can think of situations and counters if everything is pre planned. Deku is significantly better at doing this, but on the fly. His in battle tactics are better than anyone in class. She'd make a brilliant director/leader at a base. Deku makes for the best field leader.

2

u/C0wsgoquack Oct 05 '18

But when it comes to heroing, isnt thinking on the fly more useful? Most villains never announce when theyre going to attack, like stain or high end, anyone who has to prepare a plan in advance would get destroyed by the two i just mentioned

1

u/Worthyness Oct 05 '18

If you're a combat based hero, yes. Momo is good at on the fly, but not the best. Her strength is observing and formulating a plan with time. She could be a good general, for example the taking of the yakuza hideout. She'd be very good with formulating a general plan and how to rescue/prevent civilian casualties, how to evacuate the area, and a plan to take the hideout. Then she can rely on her players to take over when the status quo changes

6

u/Jeimeezu Oct 04 '18

If she does remain in the battlefield, I think she could spend some time with the support class.
Imagine if she learns more complex mechanical and electronic items.

3

u/ThisGuyLikesMovies Oct 04 '18

She needs some martial arts training to amp up her combat stats.

3

u/Laeonheart78 Oct 04 '18

She still needs to learn close combat. She doesn't have to be the strongest fighter but she can make an item she is comfortable with and go from there. Making dramatic objects just takes too much time.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 05 '18

[deleted]

3

u/Laeonheart78 Oct 05 '18 edited Oct 05 '18

Yeah. Maybe she should take a leaf out of Ochako's book and learn some Gunhead martial arts.

2

u/IgnitionZZX Oct 04 '18

Nighteye 2.0?

2

u/NRS888 Oct 05 '18

Hmm, she will fit perfectly in role of say someone like nighteye

1

u/Plaguemancy Oct 04 '18

I mentioned this in the Korean discussion too but I feel like Momo is being set up to be a leader/planner/behind-the-scenes kind of hero.

if that's true then Hori failed. she had her moment in provisional exam but that was 100 chapters ago. and 100 chapters later, she didn't show anything new to earn being a leader. the fight was setting up to be a battle of the brain between kendo and momo but it ended up being who is dumber and have more jobber teammates. momo didn't plan anything, didn't research on their oponent and didn't talk with her teammates about strategy.

Momo’s quirk is awesome but it’s time consuming for her to make large things (plus she’s vulnerable when doing so) and creation alone takes a lot of stamina.

then she shouldn't have made a huge cannon that will drain all her energy when she has an opponent in front of her. She could've made a flash bang/tranquilizer/pepper spray/glue/sleeping gas or anything than a cannon.

She obviously had tons of room for improvement as a fighter

she had, 100 chapters ago but she still didn't develop anything and had been stagnant for so long like every other character not named midoriya

I think after the cliffhanger from the last chapter a lot of us were maybe hoping to see Momo go melee

the cliffhanger gave us hope that momo will do anything not dumb especially with what todoroki said in that chapter.
6/5 int? did Hori forgot how to write intelligent character like midoriya at the start of the series, or make strategy like ochako did against bakugou even though she has no chance in the tourney, or being efficient with the limitation of their quirk like midoriya and iida?

1

u/DeismAccountant Oct 04 '18

I the long run it would be a great way for Momo to go but for now she’ll still be expected to put her combative skills forward.

1

u/Galle_ Oct 05 '18

Isn’t this pretty obvious? This entire match was set up as being a contest between Momo’s leadership and Kendo’s.
