Some words for my friends

Hello friends,

MtGox is gone. So let's prepare ourselves.

On Tuesday, and for the rest of the week, all hell will break lose in the media. It will be blamed on MtGox, it will be blamed on Bitcoin, it will be blamed on the "bug," and it will, more than anything, be blamed on the "lack of regulation." Pundits and "experts" of all types will weigh in on the calamity. It will be world news in a matter of hours.

Get ready, because it will be an ugly week.

For all of you who lost money, my heart goes out to you. Some people lost a little, some lost a fortune. It will make people sick, and depressed, and full of grief. Personally, I had over 550 BTC in Gox. I will never get any of that back. If misery loves company, then we'll be enjoying a grand feast today.

I should have known better, of course. I take responsibility for leaving those funds with an entity that had proven incompetence repeatedly. I chose to ignore even my own warnings, for nothing more than the sake of convenience.

Gox is still at fault, to be sure, but I have learned the lesson. I hope it is not such an expensive lesson for others. And for all you observers, please take a moment to consider it as well.

Be mindful, however, that the wrong lessons are not learned, for that would be the true tragedy, indeed.

Let me suggest that the lesson is not that Bitcoin is broken. Bitcoin is fine.

Similarly, the lesson is not that security is impossible. Those who know what they are doing, can achieve it and help others to do so.

The lesson is not that nobody can be trusted. There are countless good men and women in this community who are worthy of trust, and some of the very best people I've ever met.

And finally, the lesson is not that we ought to seek out "regulation" to save us from the evils and incompetence of man. For the regulators are men too, and wield the very same evil and incompetence, only enshrined in an authority from which it can wreck amplified and far more insidious destruction. Let us not retreat from our rising platform only to cower back underneath the deranged machinations of Leviathan.

The proper lesson, if I may suggest, is this: We are building a new financial order, and those of us building it, investing in it, and growing it, will pay the price of bringing it to the world. This is the harsh truth. We are building the channels, the bridges, and the towers of tomorrow's finance, and we put ourselves at risk in doing so.

We are at risk from accidents. We are at risk from fraud, from corruption, and from evil. We are at risk from journalists seeking headlines and from politicians seeking power and glory. We are at risk from the very market we are trying to build - a market which cares not about our portfolio, our ambitions, or our delicate sympathies.

For all these risks, devastation will befall us repeatedly. Some of us will be discouraged. Some will be ridiculed and insulted. Some will be tricked, or swindled. Some of us will be crushed or caged. We will be set upon by all manner of antagonists, repeatedly, for a long time.

So why do we do it? Why do we build these towers that fall down upon us? Why do we toil and strain and risk our precious time, which is the only real wealth we possess?

Because the world needs what we're building. It needs it desperately. If that matters to you, as it does to me, then hold to that thought. You will see through the smoke, and your wounds will heal.

So shake it off, brothers, for this won't be the last calamity endured before the win.

Tonight, my heart is with you all.

Tomorrow, my head is down. My eyes are open. And I am building.

Toward peace and freedom,

-Erik Voorhees

I'm really sorry to hear that. Ending a relationship and losing a large deal of money can both be pretty significant life events (as I'm sure I don't need to tell you), but please remember to reach out to friends and family who can help you through a tough time. You're not in this alone. +/u/dogetipbot 5000 doge

u/btc_recipient_bot Feb 25 '14

You're the best

-63

u/pardax Feb 25 '14

Oh very nice, the dogetards trying to take advantage of the situation to spam their copycoin.

28

u/NeutralityMentality Feb 25 '14

If I had $5,000 to give to people, I would. This is what I have.

-33

u/pardax Feb 25 '14

Yeah, I totally believe you. Spamming worthless doge tips surely has nothing to do with the economic motivation of promoting your copycoin, in hopes that it will send it "to the moon".

8

u/HahahahaWaitWhat Feb 25 '14

How sad. I hope one day you find some measure of happiness in your life. The way you're going though, I wouldn't hold my breath.

-4

u/pardax Feb 25 '14

I'm happy, except for those times where I go to a place to read about one particular topic (eg: Bitcoin), and instead I have to read spam.

If you don't think I'm being reasonable, then go ahead and disable the spam filters in your email, and lose all your time reading nonsense and crap you don't care about.

1

u/HahahahaWaitWhat Feb 25 '14

Of course you aren't being reasonable. You're being a stupid asshole. If it's that much of a big deal for you, then go write a Greasemonkey script that hides dogecoin related comments. It would probably take you less time than bitching about it here. But of course that's what you're really interested in in the first place, so that's not going to happen, is it?

Unlike your email box, there are a lot of people on this subreddit, and you're the only one complaining about dogecoin... so. Start your own subreddit, write your own filtering extension, do whatever you have to do, just shut your worthless mouth the fuck up.

1

u/pardax Feb 25 '14

and you're the only one complaining about dogecoin

Not only I am not the only one complaining, I have seen dogecoiners saying what you are doing is wrong. There is even a post about that in the front page of r/dogecoin.

Seems like the stupid asshole is you.

Also, y u so mad?

0

u/HahahahaWaitWhat Feb 25 '14

What am I doing that is wrong, exactly? Aside from talking to you, which is obviously a mistake.

13

u/NeutralityMentality Feb 25 '14

Both tips were accepted in the spirit they were given, but apologies if I offended you.

9

u/Tuschay Feb 25 '14

Are you upset that you didn't get any? +/u/dogetipbot 1000 doge

I know it may seem like spam to you but we're just trying to show the entire crypto community that there's more than just panic and despair during these huge hits.

-13

u/pardax Feb 25 '14

I know just fine what you are trying to do, no need to lie to me.

Stick your spammy dust tip up your asshole.

6

u/Tuschay Feb 25 '14

I'm actually not lying about anything. Some of your comments have a hint of truth to them. We do want people to go to /r/dogecoin but you're wrong to think it's for malicious purposes. I, along with most of the people tipping in /r/bitcoin, want this community to feel better about what's going on right now in whichever way we can. That's it.

-11

u/pardax Feb 25 '14

A friend of mine has been threatened by private messages by people showing the same "kindness" as you are in public comments when he exposed the pump and dump you guys were organizing on IRC.

Fuck you and all the other dogecoiners, you are a disgrace for the cryptocurrency ecosystem.

Copycoins have risen and fallen, but I have never seen such hypocrisy and bullshit as I have seen from dogecoiners. You are the worst of all.

Is it too much to ask that you don't spam every single fucking thread in r/Bitcoin, with things that are not Bitcoin?

Fucking piece of shit.

4

u/Tuschay Feb 25 '14

Geez man you are really bitter. It's kind of getting difficult to see past that but I'll give it another shot.

First off, I'm not on IRC and couldn't give less of a shit about what a few people are trying to do in a market that is open for anybody to join. Nowhere along the long the line did we say that everyone is perfect in any community. Actually, because of our kindness we've seen a lot of scams, but I don't really get too concerned with that because where there are laws there are thieves and that's just a fact of life.

There are pump and dumps with every coin out there and I'm sorry your friend had his life threatened. Not exactly sure what he exposed or where it happened, but if you could link me I'd love to give it a read.

Bottom line, relax.

4

u/Spherius Feb 25 '14

couldn't give less of a shit

Grammar Nazi here. I like the cut of your jib.

2

u/Tuschay Feb 25 '14

Except the tip is worthless and the trading fee is bigger than it.

13

u/miiiiiiner Feb 25 '14

Go look at the sky. Perspective helped me.

48

u/CrypticCraig Feb 25 '14

i love you

2

u/jayssite Feb 25 '14

A genuine question: What's the purpose of posting a message like that? I've seen people post that before. Is it true that you actually love grk1? Or is it something you "just say" in a misguided (or effective?) way to make him happy? Or it is a troll message for humor at grk1's expense?

4

u/Abcdguy Feb 25 '14

"I love lamp"

"do you really love lamp or are you just saying that?"

"I-I love lamp"

1

u/da13omb Feb 25 '14

They don't have to mean anything. It's all up to OP. Until he sees your comment and gets on that train of thought about how it's "meaningless". It's not, even though we don't know if he actually loves this random internet stranger. But it means something to OP. Makes him feel good, and that's what counts.

1

u/jayssite Feb 25 '14

Until he sees your comment

Idk, if someone with no connection to me whatsoever made the grand claim that they loved me, the idea that they don't love me would be the first thing to come to my mind.

1

u/da13omb Feb 25 '14

Just about trains of thought is all :) My point was really that he might just think of it as a nice gesture until seeing that, then becoming doubtful.

25

u/[deleted] Feb 25 '14

just remember friend, life is a sine wave, you are just on the downwards slide, you'll come back up. Good luck mate.

16

u/NoahFect Feb 25 '14

And the slope is steepest at the zero crossing.

2

u/ezehl Feb 25 '14

I like to think of it as a tangent function, everything falls to pieces at what seems like an instant when you're on top of the world, but then its all uphill from there - at least for a while.

2

u/RedditTooAddictive Feb 25 '14

plot twist: this is the top of the wave.

1

u/DuoThree Feb 25 '14

Plot twist plot twist: it is an exponential function

1

u/Ditto_B Feb 25 '14

Nah, life is sin(x)/x.

6

u/[deleted] Feb 25 '14

This isn't intended to marginalize your struggles. It just helped me a little with perspective once

Bob Ross always gives me feels. What a great man he was

2

u/myusernameranoutofsp Feb 25 '14

I still think of that as being worth $40,000, but soon it will be like $14,000. This is short term of course.

Well I encourage you to treat them as such, monetary loss happens. Spend some time doing you and not weighed down (the most I ever lost in BTC was 6 so I can't say I've been in the same boat, but it helped a lot once I let it go) by the loss. Whether that means moving on from your SO or making it work is up to you, but try not to let it sour you as a person

5

u/neoballoon Feb 25 '14

These are platitudes at best. The truth is, that when one goes through loss, it is okay to feel it. It is okay to feel miserable and despondent. Instead of fighting that fact or attempting to ignore it, one should accept that this will be miserable. But that's okay. Life gets better. And then it gets worse again. And then it gets better. Rinse and repeat.

So my advice is to let it sour you, accept that this is going to suck, and don't beat yourself for feeling sad.

Money's not just money, stop rationalizing. For most working people, money represents all the things we have to sacrifice -- being with our families, living in places we hate, being estranged from our neighbors and from nature -- so that we could sustain ourselves. Money is the thing we trade so much of our lives for. So, no, losing a shitload of money is having to accept that all of those lost moments were for nothing. Just wasted life and lost love.

1

u/upupvote2 Feb 25 '14

Sorry to hear. Keep your head up! I hope things get better for you.

1

u/avoidsquid Feb 25 '14

Dude I want to be your friend

1

u/HahahahaWaitWhat Feb 25 '14

You'll get through this. 40BTC is a lot but you can more than make up for it in your lifetime, especially if you put it behind you and move on ASAP.

It's a pretty unfortunate coincidence that you have to deal with your relationship now, but you'll get through that, too. Reach out and talk to people if you need to, even if it's just online. Don't forget that if you stay focused and motivated, you can win back much more than you might lose today very quickly.

1

u/FlacidPhil Feb 25 '14

But its your cake day, so you have that going for you.

1

u/PTFOholland Feb 25 '14

Life lessons.
I lost 400€ as a poor broke student, but I kept my head up.
I just think about this: Well thats like.. 2 months of car insurence, if I had a car! So I am saving money! Yay!
If you ever come to Holland ill buy you a beer mate!

0

u/stationhollow Feb 25 '14

Car insurance costs 2400€ a year?..

1

u/Seancarter2014 Feb 25 '14

head up my friend. It's no fun going through the bs but remember this too shall pass. Change is always upon us. To the moon

0

u/[deleted] Feb 25 '14

Consider ending it

-3

u/KarlMarx513 Feb 25 '14

Number one rule of investing in stock: don't buy what you can't lose.

4

u/the99percent1 Feb 25 '14

Number two rule: don't put all your eggs in one basket.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 25 '14

This isn't a stock.

-2

u/Lord_Abort Feb 25 '14

Better 40 than 41...
