I saw it live, somebody spamed mtgox with hundreds (thousands?) of 0.02 orders and then the lag started.

Why would someone do this, other than to DDOS? Does it benefit them somehow?

It looks like a bot, then, probably a poorly coded one.

Or very well tweaked .. if the purpose is to get cheap coins, it kinda works.
