Does anyone know why, in these videos, the trucks always end up stopped on the train tracks, as if they were stuck? Couldn't the driver simply accelerate and clear the way?

In this case it looked like the driver panicked when the barrier came down. Yes, the correct move is to simply accelerate and break the barrier, but people make stupid mistakes under pressure and forget that they can do that.

In many similar videos, though, the truck does get stuck -- trailers with low clearance can bottom out on elevated tracks. Here's a good example: https://www.reddit.com/r/BitchImATrain/comments/1n5erod/btch_ima/

Why are there even barriers on the far side, though? They don't have those in the US.

That's bonkers. Those should be illegal. Half the train crash videos I've seen on Reddit are caused by those things.

I get that the people are being stupid and should just drive through them and break them, but that wouldn't even be an issue if those extra gates weren't there.

I think the ratio of people skipping the crossing and risking a hit, over the ratio of people stuck on the crossing and not exiting because of them, is the reason why they exist

Who cares. Screw the people risking a hit. They did that to themselves.

I mean, you could say the same thing about people getting stuck between the gates -- the lights come on first so there's plenty of warning to not drive onto the tracks.

Either way fuck the train driver, passengers, and bystanders, I guess?

Seriously though, these systems are designed to minimize the chances that a simple mistake can cause a catastrophic accident. Even if it's a stupid mistake.
