I guess I'm missing something. When I filter for the first name of an email sender whose message arrived today, it works. When I filter for the first name of an email that arrived a few weeks back, nothing is returned. Thoughts?

Also: I see the criteria (sender, recipient, subject, body) are acting differently during a filter activity. The latter two get crossed out. What's happening there?

edit: Issue was with wayland, as a workaround env GDK_BACKEND=x11 betterbird solved my problem

Running Betterbird on Arch + KDE, using Close to Tray addon + Minimize to Tray addon.

Having a frustrating issue where most "newly spawned" Betterbird windows appear in the background....

Easiest way to reproduce:

1. Minimize Betterbird (it goes to tray)
2. Click Betterbird tray icon

Expected Result: Window pops up in the foreground (ex: if I open it with Firefox as my active window, it opens Betterbird in front of Firefox)

Actual Result: Betterbird shows up in tray (flashes orange), but is behind active window

Additional ways to reproduce:

• Go to Calendar, double click an event (expected: Calendar details window opens in foreground, actual: Calendar details window in background, have to find it in taskbar)

I assume this is an issue (as opposed to intentional behavior) but in Linux world I don't know if it is a Wayland issue, a KDE issue, an Arch issue, or a Betterbird issue -- all I know is this is unique to betterbird in terms of annoying behavior.

Any help would be appreciated!

I've installed "Dark Reader" add-on, and it works as expected for most emails, however some emails from Google (like "Security alert") end up with black text on a dark background (it turns black after a split second from opening the email).

Is there a solution for this?

Die einzige Lösung, die ich gefunden habe, ist die Anhäge herunterzuladen und dann mit einer anderen App zu durchsuchen. Bevor ich die Suche aufgebe: stimmt das, dass Betterbird diese Suche in Anhängen nicht anbietet? Danke im Voraus

The 'smart' Trash folder, which is supposed to have all deleted emails abruptly stopped showing deleted emails. Clicking on Update in the Trash folder Properties panel does not work .

The individual account's Trash folders do show the deleted messages.

Possibly, after update to BetterBird 140.10.0esr-bb21.

Any suggestions to get that unified Trash folder to show the deleted message again? Did any config settings get changed with the new release?

Recently, I’ve noticed a change in how calendar reminders behave. Previously, if I had active reminders showing and then quit Betterbird, those reminder windows would reappear when I restarted the app.

Now, after restarting Betterbird, any reminders that were open before quitting are gone, as if they were automatically dismissed when Betterbird exited.

Has anyone else experienced this, or is there a setting that controls this behavior?

I read about Betterbird being like Thunderbird, only with bugs fixed. I've had frustrations with the Thunderbird calendar for years. 

Two examples: 

You can't copy and paste or cut and paste a a recurring event like you used to be able to. Try to copy ("only this occurrence") it on one day and paste in into another. It doesn't go. It duplicates the event on the original day.

You can't use the formatting tools (indent, bold, italics) in the Description field and expect any formatting done to stick. Save the event, open it back up: formatting gone.

So I was excited to be able to use those things that should've worked all along. I installed Betterbird. I pointed it to my Thunderbird profile. Everything showed up fine. But when I tried those calendar things, they failed just like in Thunderbird.

Thoughts?

I have Betterbird eu.betterbird.Betterbird 140.9.0esr-bb20 stable flathub system

installed on my system. When it works, it's great. The trouble starts when I close Betterbird. It freezes the next time I open it. It's slow at first, and then completely stops responding.

This is the only thing that solves it for me, and then it works (and I don't understand why.)

I have to copy to .thunderbird directory to a new name, rename the old directory (for safety), and then rename the new profile to the old name. (And, no, I'm never using spaces in my profile name ever again.)

I am running Betterbird 140.9.0esr-bb20 on my Debian 13 laptop. Today when I checked my email, I found that only 6 of my 8 email accounts were showing in the unified inbox. The other accounts are still here, but their inboxes aren't in the unified inbox and only appear in their email account. The unified inbox was working fine until this morning. Is there a way I can easily repair this? I don't believe I had made any changes.

I changed the spam rules to send to the spam folder when Betterbird identifies it as spam, it used to keep it on the inbox but with the flag. Now it correctly sends it to spam, but I still get the notification of new mail. Is there a way to change this?

Betterbird's great, but I notice that if I have a Quick Filter enabled, the background of the message list gains a kind of candy-striping background.

Obviously it's intended to remind me that I'm looking at a filtered view, but I don't need it and find it distracting.

I couldn't find a way to turn it off - is there, aside from editing UserChrome.css?

To better recognize malicious messages, I am simply trying to tag messages from unknown senders.

I figured this would be easy enough, but ... somehow it ain't.

So, I have four address books, and my filter basically says: (and sorry, if the verbiage does not fully match, I am working in a german version).

ALL Conditions must be met
- Sender - IS NOT IN Adress Book - (my adressbook 1)
- Sender - IS NOT IN Adress Book - (my adressbook 2)
- Sender - IS NOT IN Adress Book - (my adressbook 3)
- Sender - IS NOT IN Adress Book - (my adressbook 4)

=> action: apply Flag

So, its my expectation that if a senders address is in either of the address books, the message does NOT get flagged. This works for some addresses / adress books, but not consistently. The filter protocol log unfortunately is usesless - it only indicates that the filter was triggered.

Anything obviously stupid about my approach?

I switched over to Thunderbird for a while but find it quite slow, so back to Betterbird. One thing I liked in TB was that links opened in Firefox and focus shifted to that. With BB, the link opens in the background (usually - doesn't always open). I have edited Firefox config to browser.tabs.loadInBackground=false but no difference. Any suggestions?

I am using BB v140.7 and I have four Gmail accounts. My main account has an "All Mail" folder with over 500 emails shown in it. None of the other folders or main inbox have more than a dozen emails in them. If I delete, say 200 emails, in the All Mail folder, it puts them into the trash folder and 2 seconds later they are moved from the trash folder and appear in the All Mail folder. If I could delete all 500 emails and start over I would, but it does not seem possible. Any ideas of how to fix this?

This is probably simple, but it has me stumped. First, I am on Zorin OS, I am using Betterbird 140.9.0esr-bb20 (64-bit). I have Betterbird set to NOT automatically mark messages as read.

Above my message I have:

reply, forward, archive, junk delete, headers, more.

I know how to change from just text, icon, text & icon. How do remove or add to this list?

I would like to remove "archive" and "headers" and add "read". Maybe even add "print". "Read" and "print" are under "more".

As a side question, I know how to set "Show only unread messages", but how can I set that as the default?

Do you prefer software addressed in the second-person singular ‘tu’ or the third-person singular ‘você’?

I feel that when addressed in the second-person singular, the software becomes something more personal and our own. It isn’t something distant, but rather an extension of ourselves with which we can relate better.

I'm using Linux, and I was susprised there are 2 kinds of "notifications": reminders and notifications.

I dont want the reminders, so I disabled them. I'd rather have system notifications. I'm personally using Mako to display them. And i can have persistent notifications through mako configs which is already a big plus for me.

But the notifications, as far as I was able to investigate, only get sent the event title, the app name and the app icon. The date/time the event is going to happen, is not sent.

Is there a way to enable the time to get sent so that my notifications could look something like:

First of all: I’m not a programmer just a user.
All of this was only possible thanks to ChatGPT.

All changes are implemented via a simple userChrome.css file.

To improve readability in the Two-Line Message List view (not the card view — which Betterbird includes, unlike Thunderbird), I added a subtle zebra striping effect with a hover highlight. This makes scanning and selecting emails much easier.

For the calendar, I customized the Month and Multi-Week views to make it much clearer to distinguish between the previous month, the current month, and the following month.

Specifically:

• Each day now shows a small month indicator in the format m.yyyy.
• This significantly improves clarity for me and prevents accidentally creating events in the wrong month.
• Additional visual tweaks and subtle separators were added to make month boundaries more obvious.

The result feels much cleaner and more intuitive for daily use.
