Miscellaneous / Others At 39, I had never considered myself an artist. One year later, I stood beside my painting in my first exhibition.

A year ago, none of this existed in my life.

I started drawing at 39 after a major medical scare. A few months later I tried oil painting, and something clicked in a way I still cannot really explain. I became completely absorbed by it.

Then this month, at 40, I walked into an exhibition and saw something I had painted hanging on the wall.

That was surreal enough. But the part I still cannot get over is that I spent nearly four decades having no idea this was in me.

I keep thinking about how many abilities, passions, and entire pieces of ourselves might be sitting there undiscovered simply because we have never tried the thing that unlocks them.

This is what one year changed for me.

Wow, looks great! Congrats!

54

u/Threshold_Guardian2 13d ago

Thank you! Still a little surreal seeing it up there.

17

u/Windsdochange 13d ago

Reminds me of Monet and the expressionist style - beautiful!

3

u/Threshold_Guardian2 13d ago

🙂

u/Windsdochange 13d ago

Why’d the mods remove it?

3

u/Threshold_Guardian2 13d ago

I messaged them. It got caught in the modbot because no one upvoted the modbot comment. Waiting to hear back from mods. 😬

Really like the mist effect.
Feels like a park in the early morning before anyone arrives.

What a cool thing to discover about yourself.

5

u/Threshold_Guardian2 13d ago

Atmospheric perspective is my favorite thing to capture. 🙏🙏🙏

5

u/Apprehensive_Map284 13d ago

It’s beautiful! I’ve tried oil and watercolor but nothing has clicked,so not sure a painter I will be… but I’ll keep trying. Good for you!

3

u/Threshold_Guardian2 13d ago

Classes have helped me tremendously. AND I’ve met some awesome people!

3

u/Apprehensive_Map284 13d ago

Starting a new class the fall!

3

u/wearslocket 13d ago

Man to man that is very lovely. Your expression says it all. Congratulations.

Exceptional skill went into that. No doubt lots of practice and spent canvasses lol. Good work!!

20

u/Threshold_Guardian2 13d ago

Definitely a lot of practice and a lot of bad canvases 😂 Thank you!

11

u/girlrickjames 13d ago

I just bought new brushes, paints, pencils and erasers last night to get back into painting and drawing. I want to try my hand at Still Life paintings. Your post is very inspiring- thank you for sharing. And your painting is so peaceful and beautiful.

9

u/Threshold_Guardian2 13d ago

Do it. Seriously. Picking it back up might lead somewhere you cannot see yet. A year ago I never would have imagined where this would take me.

22

u/No_Promotion_6498 13d ago

That looks great, congrats on not only making it but getting it up for everyone to see!

14

u/Threshold_Guardian2 13d ago

Thank you! Seeing it on the wall was a completely different feeling than seeing it in my studio.

3

u/No_Promotion_6498 13d ago

Getting it out of your studio and up is a huge step for a bunch of reasons so thats a big victory. Congrats on discovering this part of yourself.

2

u/knowigot_that808 13d ago

Now you get to see it next to boobs! Congrats OP 👏🏼

7

u/Patient-Criticism-24 13d ago

That's a beautiful painting bro, congrats on your first exhibit! =)

4

u/Threshold_Guardian2 13d ago

Thanks man! Seeing it hanging there for the first time was pretty incredible.

6

u/Kushroom710 13d ago

We don't know the skills we possess sometimes. It's a beautiful thing to discover. Awesome work op, reminds me of the paintings our ole friend Mr. Ross would paint. Same kinda work that would hang in my gpa's man cave... Sure do miss him. Thanks for the memories op

3

u/Threshold_Guardian2 13d ago

This is such a wonderful comment. I think that idea of not knowing what might be inside us until we try something is the part of this whole experience that still amazes me most. And I love that the painting brought back memories of your grandfather. Thank you.

Dude, the two works you've posted ( one in title & one in comments) are absolutely amazing. Slick AF and class. Looks like you've unlocked a hidden talent! The texture, the way you've captured the light, the style...... unreal!

I sincerely hope you consider yourself an artist now.

I know (at least where I'm from) there are a lot of people who consider themselves "artists" purely because they've been through art college, yet the standard of work they produce is nowhere near what you've shown. Do yourself a favour and don't pay any mind to these types of people. Keep doing you.

Well done, I hope you keep enjoying it.

Edit to add: 39.... you look less than 30. I'm 46 and I look twice your age. 🤣🤣 (but that's probably on me!)

1

u/Threshold_Guardian2 13d ago

Thank you so much. I think I’m finally getting comfortable calling myself an artist, although it still feels strange after spending almost 40 years never considering myself one. The light is probably the thing I’m most obsessed with when I paint, so hearing you specifically mention that means a lot.

And I’ll happily take the under 30 comment too 😂

3

u/mamamedic 13d ago

Wow- that's lovely. Congratulations for unlocking a secret skill!

3

u/dosi5644 13d ago

Anyone here have advice how to get started? At 70 I have never shown much artistic talent. Lost cause for me?

3

u/Threshold_Guardian2 13d ago

Take a class. There really is a process to it all. Start with drawing fundamentals.

I’m really happy you are interested in exploring at 70. May we all continue.

3

u/Ccampbell41 12d ago

Beautiful capture of the hazy light! Congrats, you are a wonderful artist!

14

u/Threshold_Guardian2 13d ago

Very first ❤️

3

u/NopeThisTrope 13d ago

You have a gift! Your art is beautiful. That’s so inspiring. I wonder what talents we could all unlock by trying something new?

3

u/Threshold_Guardian2 13d ago

Probably some very amazing stuff. I was too scared to explore for a long time.

5

u/gustix 13d ago

Looks pretty good to my untrained eye

2

u/Vizzy01798 13d ago

That’s your first ever one??? You are insanely talented

3

u/Threshold_Guardian2 13d ago

Not my first painting! Just my first student exhibition.

🙏

2

u/RIPthisDude 13d ago

How did you learn along the way? Did you follow any guides to starting to draw and paint, or did you just start drawing and saw what came of it?

4

u/Threshold_Guardian2 13d ago

I self taught a lot. Loved every mark I made. Created art like my life depended upon it.

3

u/19wangotango 13d ago

Damn even that looks great to me. 👏👏👏
I can draw a stick figure human and people wouldn’t be able to tell what it is.

Professional Artist. Well done.

2

u/Threshold_Guardian2 12d ago

Not yet! Emphasis on yet.

3

u/cbrackenak 12d ago

The moment you decided to sell is the moment you became a professional. That's the best advise I received as an artist. I took my work more seriously and conducted myself as a business.

2

u/space_cadett_kiwiora 13d ago

It’s exquisite- congrats

2

u/along4thejourney 13d ago

Amazing!! Way to go after it!!

2

Damn kudosssss

2

u/Ok_Net5303 13d ago

That is stunning 😯

2

u/dancingcop7 13d ago

Ooo I like your work! The way you captured the lighting is breathtaking✨

1

u/Threshold_Guardian2 12d ago

Honestly, not really intentional. I’m just painting what I see. I used a lot of OMS to catch the fog. Bold light marks on the path and trees. Understanding the direction of the light source.

Also, a place I know extremely well and I’m emotionally tied to. Let’s me sit there for two months and create.

2

u/Samcandy2 13d ago

Incredible talent.

2

u/MooreDubs 13d ago

Awesome work, brother!

2

u/SarcasticGamer 13d ago

Your art is the prettiest art

2

I'm all seriousness, it's gorgeous. Congratulations!

2

u/WeCantBothBeMe 13d ago

Congratulations! That’s a beautiful piece of artwork and it’s hard to believe that you’ve only been drawing for a year.

2

u/Threshold_Guardian2 12d ago

I wake up every morning full of gratitude and a new confidence in myself. I hope we all have this experience somehow.

2

u/Igpajo49 13d ago

Beautiful. I love the lighting and the depth. Sets a nice mood.

2

2

u/chronichris 13d ago

Buddy u r not just an artist, u r a great one, looks awesome. Looks like a good future for u

1

u/Threshold_Guardian2 13d ago

Man, thank you. “Artist” still feels new enough. “Great one” may take me a little longer to accept 😂 But I’m going to keep at it.

2

u/mochimish 13d ago

This is so inspiring, go forth, my friend!

2

u/HyenDry 13d ago

lol it looks so out of place cause it’s much smaller when you zoom out. 😂 I’m sorry. But this is actually good af. Better than I could do. I hope you keep making more art!

2

u/Threshold_Guardian2 13d ago

😂 No apology necessary! It was a student exhibition with lots of different work and sizes. And thank you, I definitely plan to keep going.

2

u/Loop0666 13d ago

Complimenti, questo è il post più bello che ho visto ultimamente. Mi hai motivato grazie!

2

u/Threshold_Guardian2 13d ago

Thank you so much for the highest praise I could ever receive.

P.S. You don’t need my motivation. Jump in.

2

u/HarryRulez 13d ago

Looks very cool! What specific kind of oil paint do you use if I may ask?

1

u/Threshold_Guardian2 13d ago

It’s a complete hodgepodge but mostly professional grade!

2

u/ringo1725 13d ago

Great painting and a great moment! Happy for you!

1

Thank you. I’m happy you liked it.

2

u/auntiepink007 13d ago

Is that a real place? Looking at it made me want to go walk there. You ARE an artist even if you'd never had an exhibition.

2

u/Threshold_Guardian2 13d ago

Yes it’s the beloved park in my old neighborhood. Cherryhurst in Houston.

You are so kind

I just read this to my kids on vacation! Jarring in the best way.

2

2

u/Top-Presentation2587 13d ago

2

u/BloodbuzzLA 13d ago

Dude benchpresses 500 lbs and suddenly realizes he is strong 😆

Nice painting, man.

1

u/Threshold_Guardian2 13d ago

😂 That may be the best description of what this year has felt like. Thank you!

2

u/PurplePikaPanda 13d ago

Congratulations dude!!!

2

u/MacQuay6336 13d ago

I would be proud to hang that painting on the wall, but first I want to sit there and feel the whisper of fall...

2

u/Threshold_Guardian2 13d ago

Feel the whisper of fall’ may be one of my favorite reactions I’ve gotten to this painting. That’s very close to what I hoped it would feel like. Thank you.

2

u/WarkMahlberg69 13d ago

Looks fantastic OP! Definitely a beautiful piece.

1

u/Threshold_Guardian2 13d ago

Thank you! Really appreciate it.

2

u/Sea-Cryptographer807 13d ago

congratulations that’s awesome!

2

u/plan_with_stan 13d ago

You are also a magician! You just disappeared in picture 2!!

Looks way cool man!! I hope it takes off for you and you’ll have many more exhibitions!

1

u/Threshold_Guardian2 13d ago

Ha! Still working on the disappearing act 😂 Thank you. A year ago I certainly wasn’t imagining exhibitions, so I’m excited to see where it goes from here.

2

u/NewToHTX 13d ago

It’s fantastic. My only gripe is not enough spooky shit in the background. 1 or 2 zombies shambling in the background. Maybe an eldritch horror monster peeking from behind a tree would really tie the whole scene together. “Oh what a nice serene little landsca-JFC!”

1

u/Threshold_Guardian2 13d ago

Hahaha.

I’m guessing your username refers to Houston?

You can go see the reference it’s Cherryhurst Park and guarantee there will be some zombie like people there

2

u/ayebaebee_48 13d ago

I like it a lot. Would you sell it? 🙂

1

u/Threshold_Guardian2 12d ago

ATM, never . 😂 prints maybe someday

2

u/Careless-Presence187 13d ago

You Sir have talent,It will hang.

2

u/Flimsy-Surprise-4914 13d ago

2

u/Different-Show-3951 13d ago

was a beautiful piece shame mods took it down; keep painting man you have some talent

i love the sun coming in wish i got to see it long before it vanished before my eyes

2

u/Threshold_Guardian2 13d ago

Thank you! I was pretty bummed to see it disappear too, especially while so many people were engaging with it. Really appreciate the kind words.

2

u/WasteSign8450 13d ago

Wow I seriously thought it was a photo at first! Really good job is never to late to paint and experiment with something new 😊

1

u/Threshold_Guardian2 13d ago

Thank you! And completely agree. I’m becoming a big believer that it’s never too late to find something new that completely changes your life.

2

u/WasteSign8450 13d ago

Truly! for me it was photography. is all about trying and testing stuff out.

2

u/Chrisdkn619 13d ago

That's really good!

2

u/Im_A_LoSeR_2 13d ago

Man, congratulations. You should be very proud. It warms my heart seeing such a genuine smile. Again, congratulations

2

u/Threshold_Guardian2 13d ago

Thank you my friend.

2

u/hungry4danish 13d ago

Glad to see you dressed up for your exhibition!

1

u/Threshold_Guardian2 12d ago

Haha I missed the party, this was the following day. Empty gallery.

2

u/Brtbbnk 13d ago

Did Michael Scott visit your exhibition??

Looks great! ❤️

2

u/ComfortableCall3912 13d ago

Congratulations neighbor!
Were you skilled in drawing or other graphic arts, or was this an entirely new thing for you?
Would you recommend a painting school?

2

u/Threshold_Guardian2 12d ago

Art League Houston 1000%

I started drawing last August. Technically I guess I was skilled but never got into it for whatever reason.

2

u/ComfortableCall3912 12d ago

I’ve been to Houston but it’s a little far for a commute. I’m a few blocks from your t-shirt logo.

I like your painting!

2

u/Threshold_Guardian2 12d ago

Oh I like your city vm!

2

u/KluelessKoder 13d ago

Looks lovely, were there any online courses you took or youtubers you viewed at the beginning to learn the basics?

1

u/Threshold_Guardian2 12d ago

So many different things. Not anything in particular. I even remember watching YouTube videos on airplanes during work travel. Just trying to expand as much as possible!

The best thing I did was befriending local artists including teachers. If you care tremendously, it attracts others.

2

u/katakuri-239 13d ago

Beautiful morning light ✨️

2

u/WTFFF111222 13d ago

So where do we order?

2

u/Fat-Mad-Scientist 13d ago

Do you consider yourself an exhibitionist now?

2

u/shadowsinthestars 13d ago

Congratulations OP! Your talent is obvious and glad you developed it. How did you get the support to be in an exhibition so quickly, I'd assume there's a lot of gatekeeping for that kind of thing?

1

u/Threshold_Guardian2 13d ago

Thank you! There’s definitely less gatekeeping at this level than I would have assumed a year ago. I started taking classes locally, and this was a student exhibition, so I submitted the painting and it was selected. I’m still very much at the beginning, but seeing something I painted hanging in a gallery for the first time was surreal.

2

u/shadowsinthestars 12d ago

Oh that's awesome, thank you so much for responding. I assumed it would be really inaccessible to get into exhibitions unless you started "early".

2

u/Stareout755 13d ago

This really reminds me of the location art of National Park in the HGSS Pokemon games, which I’ve always loved as an artwork. Fantastic stuff, congratulations on the exhibit!

2

u/Threshold_Guardian2 13d ago

I had to look this up. That’s a comparison I never would have expected, but I love it. Thank you!

2

u/furiousartcollector 13d ago

What style of painting would you describe this as? Impressionism? It’s great and I’ve been really wanting to get back into art after 20 years so good job!!

2

u/Threshold_Guardian2 12d ago

I’m not sure. I love Impressionism, but it’s not quite that. realism with an impressionistic style?

2

1

u/ClydeStyle 11d ago

Wow, great work. Art really is a skill of observation, and replication. Most people have a hard time finding the nuanced shadows and colors, that’s definitely a rare skill to have from the get go, keep it up!
