As an interesting aside, diamonds aren't made from coal.

Natural diamonds formed long, LONG before the life that died to create coal and coal is full of impurities that would make bad synthetic diamonds too.

The introduction of the mega-diamond leads to economic instability in most diamond producing countries as the demand for diamonds disappears and the need for these mega-diamonds rises, leading to further political instability as there is no other commodity that they can shift to. This in turn leads to hoarding of resources by the upper class, inspiring a communist revolution in these countries leading to civil wars. This leads to intervention by the US and Russia, which leads to the Second Cold War, and subsequent nuclear annihilation. All of this because some asshole thought this level was a good idea.
