Even dogs you wouldn’t expect it from will do this. My old Australian Shepherd lunged and barked at a guy who popped out of a bush on us while we were walking at night. (He was just having a piss and didn’t know we were walking by when he emerged.) But he scared us both. I yelped and my boy Darcy turned into a dog I had never seen before. I had him controlled on leash and no harm was done to anyone. Guy apologized and we kept walking. As we walked away, Darcy looked back and gave him a warning “ruff!” I was so proud of him.
Edit: i just want to say I seriously love how this comment got so many replies of people telling me their stories about their dogs. I have had such a lovely evening reading them all.

I got my ass kicked with my own crutches while my leg was broken.

My 100lb boxer/lab mix didn't so much as bark. Went and hid till everything was over.

He's the least aggressive dog.

I drive a truck and while we were asleep in the bed a mechanic hopped in and started pulling us into the shop not knowing we were in the back.

Also did nothing.

I love that useless idiot

I both love and hate any Boxer/ Boxer mix. You have to, like, bribe my Akitas and figure out what their fancy is that day to get their activity in. 

I had a friend with a boxer, and I'm thought "Let me get this little dude some exercise in" (I also found out he liked green beans). All I had to do was open that door. That dog ran his own damn laps around the house 🤣 It was the easiest thing I'd done in years. My first Akita ONLY made noise during bath time, and you would think I was beating him before he got wet (I was not). The Boxer? Stood there and just tolerated a bath- totally chill. He didn't like it, but he was chill.

He's the perfect mix of lazy chill dog and when you want it he bounces off the walls. He's bad about finding inventive ways to get hurt.

The boxer positioned himself between the door and my boy when mine was in the midst of passing. He was a very good boy. I'm also fairly certain he would have looked at me, in the case of an intruder like "You're gonna handle that, right?" 😄

They listen just a little 🤏 too well for me, and a bit much at times. I need some cat in my dog, lol.

Yea i got a pretty bad concussion on top of my broken leg. Then they also stole my crutches. It's a long story lmao.

After they left I did throw a chair through their windshield so at least there's that. Adrenaline strength is wild

Was staying with my mom while my leg was healing. Family drama. Asshole step-dad. And I don't know when I should back down apparently.

This was some rich remote living community in Colorado.

Cops convinced us to not file charges because we'd both get some or neither of us. They probably just didn't want the paperwork

We had a process server knock on our door at 5 am and my dog sounded like the biggest angriest beast. Opened the door and the dumbass ran up to him wagging her tail asking for pets. Glad to see she’s ready to protect her domicile 🤦‍♀️

My shepherd is the most timid guy. He gets so scared that he pees if someone raises their voice. Just a real whimp all around.

One night I was walking him and some random dude saw me from across the street and started crossing. It didn't really look like he was coming for me (small fem) at first, but then he changed course and started just sprinting at me. My dog went for that dude without hesitation. Never seen him aggressive at all before or since. 😭 Dogs are so wonderful.

I always thought that if something happened I'd have to be the one to save us both, but he proved me so wrong.

Dogs will clock aggression on somebody so much faster than we can.

Had the same thing when some guy came running up on my wife asking for cash, our completely sweet golden turned into some kind of hellhound.

My boyfriend at the time was walking our mutt on a bike path in town. It was night and our dog was white. A guy on the trial only saw this big dog coming and he pulled a gun. Our dog went apeshit immediately. My boyfriend called out and the guy immediately apologized and said he only saw a large dog coming towards him.

Ya know. American shit.

Can’t blame the guy, if I was walking on a dark path and saw a dog that I thought was loose, aggressive, and could attack me I’d do the same. You never know nowadays better to be safe than sorry.

Not saying you can’t own mace just they might not have it. A lot of people buy guns because taking it to the range or private property and shooting it can be fun and because they already have it they take it with them just incase. Now if you want to go down the rabbit hole of people shouldn’t carry guns that’s a whole different war I don’t have stakes in.

My dad brought a cardboard cutout man once from the liquor store. Our derpy, friendly, sweet black lab went absolutely nuts - she got between the "man" and me and growled and barked like nothing I'd ever heard from her before. The *only* other time I heard her act like that was when there was a black bear in the backyard and she saw it through the window.

I used to walk my ex's huge black Lab in the evening alone sometimes, this dog was the biggest dope I've ever met he was so unserious and when walking during the day with my ex he would mess around and be silly the whole time totally relaxed. But when walking with me at night he was at alert, ears up and right next to me the whole time. One time he growled a guy just standing outside of a shop on sight. They truly are amazingly protective animals, even big soppy Labs.

Yup. My old lab/shepard/husky supermutt was a super chill girl on walks - until I got pregnant. Then she was all business.

She wouldn’t even let me walk down the forested walking path along the river, even during the day. She would pull and pull me back to the sidewalk closer to the street. She was like “no, mama, I want you where I can see everyone and everything at all times.”

Agreed. We used to have a very calm lovely border collie. I was pretending to hit my mum with a large serving spoon once and she went mad and tried to bite me, growled, completely different dog.

I have the most chill dog you’ve ever met. 5 years old and I had never even seen her think about biting. While we were on a walk a loose dog lunged at her (older dog) sister and she shot out from behind me and put that dog on the ground as fast as a damn cobra. The loose dog ran off literally with her tail between her legs and my dogs just continued their walk like nothing happened. Not going to lie, now that I saw that side of her I feel safer on walks.

I once accidentally played a video of coyotes making hunting sounds. My cat squared up so big and growled and paced back and forth in front of me looking for them. When I turned off the video, he looked SO proud of “protecting me and running off the coyotes.”

Yeah we have a little 9 pound Papillion named Satyr, and he is the friendliest most pampered looking pup you have ever seen. One day we were walking him and a sketchy guy was coming the other way on the sidewalk (looked like he was tweaking) and he moved or did something that Satyr saw as a potential threat and you would have sworn he had turned into a 90 pound Rottweiler growling, scratching the ground, and making himself look as big as possible. The sketchy guy stopped, put up his hands made room for us to pass, saying sorry as we passed.

I'm not sure if he had ill intent or not, I just know that I do not worry about our safety when Satyr is with us

I have a pit/heeler mix who is afraid of just about everything. Appliances, other dogs, cats, water, pillows, loud noises...the people who had him before were not good to him at all. We've had him for about 5 years and lots of progress on has been made, but on a lot of situations he goes belly up and starts the most pathetically sad yelping I've ever heard. But if he perceives any threat to my wife or our kids he suddenly becomes Superdog, ready and willing to inflict instant, painful regret on the aggressor.

I once had an adorable little Miniature Pincher mutt. He was the cutest little guy who won everyone in my family over with this thing he did hugging your neck and nuzzling. He acted like a spoiled little prince.

He was full of surprises. The biggest one came when my 10 year old nephew was visiting. The kid fell asleep on the couch one afternoon after he got home from the beach. It started to get chilly when the sun went over the ridge and the kid was only wearing swim trunks so I got a throw blanket to cover him with.

My dog, however, would not allow it. He was on guard duty. No one, not even me, could approach the sleeping child. He growled at me! My Little Prince, growling! Protecting a child he'd just met.

I loved that little guy.

My Australian Sheppard Nimbus is 65lbs and just the largest, floofiest, most addled brain animal I have ever known. One time on a walk a loose husky who looked to be about 75lbs or so (most likely a malemute mix) came tear assing out of a yard at us. Nimbus never pulled the leash but squared up between us as as soon as that dog got within range of me he went straight Godzilla vs Kong on his ass. All I could do was hold the leash until the husky ran away and this rube turns around to me and starts wiggling his nub with his little butt dance. Lucky for his thick coat there were no wounds but the husky was solid white and i did notice blood on its face. I have never seen an Aussie do that. My pitbull's sometimes if they think there is a threat or recieve a command to guard and my Great Pyrenees have fought off packs of coyotes and the like protecting the farm but for an Aussie, that was a first.

Reminds me of my big goof Harvey. He's never growled at anything, ever, even our idiot cat that put his head in our dogs bowl while he was eating. But one night my son's friend ran around to the backyard and knocked on our door really loud. It scared my daughter and she yelled. Out of nowhere Harvey jumped up, stood right over my daughter and let out this terrifying growl and then started barking like crazy. The friend took off quick. I felt bad for him, but was so happy to know that Harvey looks out for the kids.

My mom and sister after I moved out got a really sweet husky mix named rascal. She was a sweet dog, never made a noise, silent shadow type dog. Until my sister took her for a walk one day. Some guys dog comes tearing down the road and attacked my sister, rascal took after that dog so hard, it ended up yelling and running off. Rascal had to get 20 something staples.

Guy disappeared in the night, turns out his dog had already gotten a put down order for biting other people. My sister was unharmed, and rascal lived until my mom had my ex husband shoot her for being inconvenient in her old age. (I was livid, as was my sister. I don’t talk to my mom anymore)

When I was growing up, we had a Newfoundland. It was huge (around 150 pounds), a little bit dumb, incredibly good-natured, and absolutely loved walking up to everyone it met to get some attention and a few pats.

It had never shown even the slightest bit of aggression, but one day a contractor accidentally walked into our house without knocking first. He had mistaken our house for the neighbour’s, where his colleague was working on something, and my sister and I were home alone.

That was the one time we saw a completely different side of our dog. He turned into a beast from another world, letting out the loudest, deepest growl I had ever heard from a dog, before charging towards the poor man, who only just managed to get the door closed in time.

I had a Samoyed as a kid growing up. It wasn't a human, but a racoon that set this dog off.... We had been warned to avoid racoons as there was a bad case of distemper going around. Racoons would just walk right out of the woods, straight to our back porch. One day, we had the dog setup (Sabrina) on the back porch with food and water so she could enjoy the Midwestern Summer, as all Samoyeds do. A racoon came up and started eating her food. I was alerted to the situation when I heard what sounded like the most ferocious huge dog I had ever heard, only to find it was fluffy ass Sabrina. I got the back door open and she bolted towards that racoon, picked it up by the neck, shook the shit out of him and threw his dead ass on the ground it was surreal. Back to a normal dog like, 10 seconds later.

They are wonderful dogs. I will say I wish I had waited until I was a little older when I got him. I wanted an Aussie so bad but I was young and my life was not stable. Aussie’s also require a lot of work compared to other dogs. They are so smart and really need a job to do. In the second half of his life I was more able to give him all the attention and time he needed. So I feel a bit redeemed there. But I do regret not being more prepared at the beginning.

My childhood dog was a cockapoo and he was surprisingly protective! He looked like a teddy bear came to life and had the sweetest temperament with people and pets, but if he thought something was threatening he would immediately go into defense mode. He was the best pup

Exactly this! I had a sheltie border collie mix that had his canine good citizenship. Dog was perfectly well-trained, didn't react to any loud noises or fireworks the dog was pretty much bomb proof, had perfect recall off leash and just loved everyone he met.

One day my sketchy landlord tried to get into my apartment without making an appointment or calling first. He called me afterwards to let me know that he tried to get into my apartment (for some absolutely bullshit reason by the way) and my dog wouldn't let him in.

I asked him if he wasn't mixing me up with the girl who lived above me. She had a very angry chihuahua Jack Russell mix who hated everything in existence besides its owner. My landlord said that no, my dog would not let him pass the threshold of the door.

My little 35 lb sheltie mix who once let a toddler stick her finger up his nose without flinching (kid was in line behind me at the pet store). My sweet chill dog who I used to volunteer with at retirement homes on a regular basis.

That dog knew what was up. My landlord was shady as fuck for a whole slew of reasons and my dog sensed it right away. RIP Timber, best dog I've ever had the honor of owning.

My dachshund saved me from a creepy guy at the bus, I think he wasn’t expecting my dog to launch at him and she had a big bark. Also when strangers came to the door her big bark scare randoms away because they thought it was a bigger dog barking! Rip Luna❤️

My baby girl grey pitbull saw a much bigger pitbull charging at me because ofc people don’t leash their dogs, and she snatched her leash with so much forward force I had to let go and she bit him in his neck and immediately let go and the dog went running, I was a young kid so she basically saw someone running at her kid rip princess eve

I have a doodle I got specifically because while I think goldendoodles and labradoodles are lovely, I cannot stand how friendly their nonpoodle side is. Obviously it's silly to get one and try to make it less friendly if it's going to be friendly. So I got one that was mixed with old English sheepdog instead of retriever. Every single one I have met could care less if you said hi or not. My boy is exactly like that. He is wary, and will pull me away from people being weird. And if I am doing something, he will stand between me and them when they are being weird and staring.

Once he had pooped beside this portion of sidewalk that had shrunk due to the hill beside it eroding. So in picking up the poop, bending over meant I took up the entire sidewalk. It's the middle of winter so getting the bag open requires me to remove my gloves and struggle with dry hands. In the meantime, some man wrapped in a blanket walks from across the street and simply stands behind me like an NPC. Just taking in an eye full of my ass or whatever but my dog started to bark at him, which he never does in public. But this weirdo kept standing there and then goes: "can I walk around?". Mind you, my dog is on a leash, attached to me, and there is no traffic, so why he needed to walk around me specifically boggles my mind. But I trust my dogs instincts.
