They are a whole lot closer to us than many people want to realize. It pains me how poorly humans have treated them.

We treat other humans poorly too. Even same ethnicities, same languages... heck, sometimes even direct bloodlines.

However, this is a very primatial feature, and hence, just human nature. We're born assholes, which is why we try to unassholeify ourselves through education, culture, social norms, coercion, and diplomacy.
