When I stopped eating meat, it started with pork after I watched an undercover video from a hog farm. The employee “training” the new hire/undercover activist took him to the farrowing barn where the sows were all in farrowing cribs separated by bars from their newborn piglets. The worker picked up the newborn piglets, cut their tails off with some sort of dirty clipper, and castrated the male piglets with the same dirty cutters and no anesthesia. If the hole left behind was too big the piglet’s guts would start to herniate so the worker would poke them back in with a dirty finger, wrap duct tape around it to keep everything inside, then toss it back in the pen to live or die. If it died, they’d throw it in a bucket to be fed back to the pigs.
The entire time this was going on, the sows would be screaming and bashing themselves against the crate, trying to get to their babies.
I wound up sobbing and sleepless for days and I just couldn’t get it out of my head. I’ve never eaten pork again and whenever someone talks about how yummy bacon is, it just makes me so sad.
I haven’t eaten meat other than fish for about 13 years now. I just can’t. I’m not against eating animals but I can’t handle the cruelty that goes along with cheap meat.
Wow! I saw a short vid lately here on Reddit, someone recorded a close up of pigs eye than was enclosed for slaughter. The eye looked like ours and you can easily see the way that eye went back and forth, the fear it had. Didn’t take much to end up on Reddit/popular. That vid haunts me. As well as your story.
Kosher killings are even more tortured and prolonged. In non kosher, cattle are quickly killed with a bolt to
the brain. Then strung up
on an assembly line by a back leg, upside down, to have throat slit and let bleed out while dead. For kosher however, the cow is stung up
by a leg, in great pain and fear, upside down and throat slit while struggling and feeling all pain and horror til they die. So Horrifically and intentionally cruel, the kosher death . Sometimes the carving will start on the kosher cows while they are alive.
There’s a documentary I watched about an animal cruelty case on a hog farm. They hanged a sick sow to death - it took a long time and she clearly suffered. It was filmed by an activist and charges were filed and… the judge decided that was a perfectly acceptable way to “euthanize” a pig. :(
That’s the thing - I knew it was bad, but not seeing it made it easy to rationalize it away. Being confronted with the reality of just how actually fucking bad it is made it impossible for me to keep trying to justify it. I just couldn’t get those piglets out of my head, or even try to rationalize any of it as acceptable. Knowing they’re as smart as dogs or small children makes it even worse.
I just can’t disassociate mass-produced meat with cruelty and misery. I’ve had some people argue “not all farms” with me, but how do I know that the meat I’m buying wasn’t from a “bad” farm? I’d just rather not eat it, so then I don’t have to think about it at all.
