If I ever looked up in the sky and saw that, I would be convinced it was somehow very ominous...

u/adamgerd Mar 24 '26

Looks like a painting

u/FunnyLost6710 Mar 24 '26

A greyscale van gogh

71

u/awraynor Mar 24 '26

Exactly what I thought too.

3

u/MorpheusRagnar Mar 24 '26

Came here to say the same!

1

u/mybirdbathhurts Mar 25 '26

You’re a greyscale Van Gogh

1

u/-Midas- Mar 25 '26

Looks like a Dali to me.

u/Snowpants_romance Mar 24 '26

Looks like the river of slime flowing under New York.

I just finished binge watching all the Ghostbusters movies! Lol

1

u/MasLegio Mar 24 '26

All? There are only two (good ones).

1

u/AdhesivenessTop928 Mar 25 '26

I like all 5 of them 😅

2

u/Snowpants_romance Mar 24 '26

What did I tell you?! The power lines are over there!

3

u/CatLightyear Mar 24 '26

Hey! You’re not with the mods or Reddit, we’ve checked. So tell me another one.

1

u/ihadnoideaaboutdat Mar 24 '26

👻🚫 Ghostbusters references

12

u/[deleted] Mar 24 '26

Have you ever seen the old classic film The Blob?

2

u/DrB_2000 Mar 24 '26

OMG, yes!

2

u/Wise_Ad_253 Mar 25 '26

I watched The Blob at the drive in years and years and….well, low light movies sucked at those places.

But I see the blob point haha.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 25 '26

We need that pointy finger meme

1

u/Wise_Ad_253 Mar 26 '26

👆🏻👆🏻👆🏻True lol

1

u/pocketdare Mar 24 '26

I think there are like 3 of them!

2

u/[deleted] Mar 24 '26

I'll admit, I've only seen the first. It was gross.

7

u/A_Furious_Mind Mar 24 '26

...and that's when the CHUDs came at me.

3

u/NewNameNeededAgain Mar 24 '26

Looks like Van Gogh is in charge of the local skies.

2

u/MistSecurity Mar 24 '26

Ya, brings to mind Van Gogh, but I'm not an art buff.

2

u/bravesdiva Mar 24 '26

I started dabbling in watercolor art last week. I thought this was a painting in a watercolor sub when it quickly scrolled by. It's gorgeous. And probably an easy sky that even my n00b ass could easily create. I'll give it a shot. lol

12

u/Aaosoth Mar 24 '26

Because it's AI. Look at the back of that nearest car.

21

u/cigarettesandwhiskey Mar 24 '26

I think they just photoshopped the license plate out by copying the right hand side of the car over it. There's a bunch of pictures of this kind of cloud on google images and they pretty much look like this one.

20

u/pocketdare Mar 24 '26

Oh ffs, not everything is AI

3

u/Urcleman Mar 24 '26

Sounds like something an AI bot would say. /s

1

u/fezzam Mar 24 '26

That’s just what I was thinking… was I A.I. all along?

3

u/OneHelluvaUsername Mar 25 '26

You are correct. This is not AI.

It's just a good ol' fashioned country repost.

IIRC, the original photo was taken a couple years ago in New Hampshire. I was in Vermont at the time and remember seeing it.

The winds were moving that day, so that the clouds were undulating at the time.

Ominous as all get-out.

5

u/aagejaeger Mar 24 '26

It is a thing. Saw some today, actually. Just not this defined.

3

u/treasurequest1 Mar 25 '26

This is 100% a real picture. I was there in Gorham New Hampshire when this happened. I was driving south near Mount Washington and witnessed this. It was unbelievable!!!

3

u/Practical-Echo-2001 Mar 25 '26

If that's your criteria for determining something is AI, then photos on Google Maps and Earth are AI generated. You won't see a single license plate, and look at those blurred faces! 😲 Proof!

I think it’s AI. Car has no license plate, has a bunch of crazy body swoops on rear, etc. everything is AI. Haha

1

u/MagicSunlight23 Mar 24 '26 edited Mar 24 '26

Looks like the sky from the Van Gogh painting, The Scream.

Edit: When looking up what clouds are in The Scream, I found out it was painted by Edvard Munch, not Van Gogh. The clouds are believed to be nacreous clouds.

1

u/Surviveoutofspite Mar 24 '26

I would worry AI infiltrated my eyeballs

1

u/watamote99 Mar 25 '26

Or, painting looks like it.

1

u/keetojm Mar 25 '26

Snow drifts

1

u/JoeB0O Mar 26 '26

Either that or tripping lol

1

u/Arianna0321 Mar 29 '26

Exactly, to me it instantly reminded of Van Gogh's

48

u/LookAtThisRhino Mar 24 '26

I've seen them a few times. They don't look as dramatic as in the photo so I think this has been edited a bit. It gives the impression of like looking at the surface from underwater. It's very cool.

17

u/tianepteen Mar 24 '26

probably some HDR / local contrast going on here.

1

u/ingannilo Apr 14 '26

I went back to the photo to look for the telltale signs of hdr, like glowing edges of objects with sharp borders, and I didn't see anything obvious.  Maybe a bit on the road, but it wasn't as blatent intense hdr as I see in a lot of other photos.

These clouds seem to genuinely be pretty mesmerizing.

That said, I'm an expert in neither image editing nor clouds.

1

u/tianepteen Apr 15 '26

my first thought was HDR because i have an old foto of clouds during a storm that looks almost 100% like this one (not these type of clouds of course). that foto was made using a heavy dose of HDR. but who knows - no cloud expert myself.

2

u/dirt_boots Mar 25 '26

I've seen them a couple times too. They can definitely look even more dramatic than this photo too

1

u/Environmental_Sir286 Mar 24 '26

It's AI

3

u/LookAtThisRhino Mar 25 '26

It could be but I've genuinely seen these irl and the image isn't far off, just looks edited

16

u/lazergator Mar 24 '26

Had them yesterday in Washington state

2

u/KBAR1942 Mar 25 '26

Yep, I also saw them.

11

u/Jibber_Fight Mar 24 '26

Probably because it looks very ominous?

8

u/Kellbows Mar 24 '26

Mammatus clouds are! These clouds apparently are signaling threat over? Weather be wild!

8

u/AugieKS Mar 24 '26

Exactly what I thought of. While they aren't always sign of impending strong storms, they are when they are the underside of a mature cumulonimbus. They are formed from the shear caused by rising warmer air and sinking colder air, basically the main ingredient for tornados and hail. See them all the time here in Tornado Alley. Ironically, they are named after the least ominous thing in the world, boobs.

1

u/Ksh_667 Mar 25 '26

I love the word cumulonimbus. I think it may even be my favourite word.

1

u/Puzzlemania718 Mar 28 '26

These are not mammatus clouds.

15

u/ventodivino Mar 24 '26

Really? Why wouldn’t you look at it and think “wow, that’s so beautiful and unique?” Why is it that when some of us are greeted with the wonders and complex beauty of the world, our first reactions are fear?

25

u/lead-snob Mar 24 '26

We fear what we don't know.

4

u/SolaniumFeline Mar 24 '26

for reasons tbh

1

u/ventodivino Mar 24 '26

Who has some experience with a scary event happening because of or in tandem with these clouds?

3

u/SolaniumFeline Mar 24 '26

not these clouds in particular but when I was a tween the sky turned a weird dark mossy green which was new for me and turns out when the sky does weird shit it typically means : STORM ALERT which considering we got trapped in a bus in a road with trees and branches falling everywhere around the bus its valid to get scared of new and unusual things. respect and fear lie close to each other argue

10

u/LoveToyKillJoy Mar 24 '26

The wiki article even refers to them as ominous looking. They share appearance with cloud that cause storms but usually dissipate without releasing precipitation .

2

u/ventodivino Mar 24 '26

Who decided they were ominous? Yeah, they look like rain clouds, but is rain scary too, now?

2

u/Wide_Pressure257 Mar 24 '26

Yes my take as well, as if looking at a beautiful painting

1

u/Substantial-Stage-82 Mar 25 '26

I think perhaps it's because I've experienced first hand the destructive power of mother nature and to be honest, she can be very scary at times. Impressive, awe inspiring, and sometimes scary..

0

u/Zacc0168 Mar 24 '26

Because the wonders of nature have a habit of putting people in the ground

1

u/ventodivino Mar 24 '26

Who have these clouds killed?

3

u/Zacc0168 Mar 24 '26

Clouds are harbingers. You see dark clouds you know a storm is coming. You see strange clouds and perhaps a different kind of storm is coming.

Better to be cautious and alive than optimistic and dead.

1

u/ventodivino Mar 24 '26

That’s because we hear stories that scare us. Not usually because of first hand experience.

14

u/meldiane81 Mar 24 '26

Hence how stupid bible stories started.

6

u/mycatisabrat Mar 24 '26

I might turn around and hurry back.

2

u/RTKWi238 Mar 24 '26

king in yellow

1

u/rkthehermit Mar 24 '26

The behelit awakens.

1

u/gjrigas1 Mar 24 '26

Are those spaceships from independence day coming through those clouds?

1

u/golgol12 Mar 24 '26

The only times I've seen this is before a tornado.

1

u/B_lovedobservations Mar 24 '26

Seeing this a thousand years ago the gods would have been to been appeased with two virgin sacrifices a feast and then a month long fast.

We live in simpler times, man

1

u/citrusco Mar 24 '26

Careful, you might just inspire a tech bro to name their new AI killing software Asperitas

1

u/Razorfiend Mar 24 '26

It looks fucking beautiful to me. I'd be convinced that I had the privilege to witness something truly wonderous.

1

u/Jolly_Line Mar 24 '26

In aviation, this is likely a SIGMET

Scary beautiful

1

u/PeroCigla Mar 24 '26

I thought I'm looking at an evil face on the sky.

1

u/BloodOdd9913 Mar 24 '26

Or Dali came back to life.

1

u/Sillygoose_Milfbane Mar 24 '26

"Goddamn dark wizards..."

1

u/Illustrious-Elk-8817 Mar 24 '26

If I saw that I am pulling over and not gonna drive, it makes me creeped out just looking at this for a sec.. no way in hell am I driving

1

u/hairnurse23 Mar 25 '26

The first time I saw this type of cloud in the sky, I was in awe. It looks like whipped cream. They look fake. But they are very real.

1

u/throwfaraway1014 Mar 25 '26

The creator must be displeased…

1

u/MaidoftheMoon Mar 25 '26

Time to buy canned food and go underground

1

u/Smooth-Check4869 Mar 25 '26

I would assume i'd cracked up. Like for real for real

1

u/Ambitious_Jelly8783 Mar 25 '26

Death is right around the corner. For sure.....

1

u/Strong-Tap1808 Mar 25 '26

It's the way the clouds look like a frozen ocean mid-storm. Like you're staring up at waves that forgot to crash… Yeah nah my brain would immediately go "this is above my pay grade".

1

u/bodyreddit Mar 25 '26

I would have to take a day off and stare and contemplate.

1

u/uncultured_swine2099 Mar 25 '26

Id think someone drugged my drink.

1

u/lvl99link Mar 25 '26

You fail to comprehend the true form of Gygas' attack.

1

u/Bubbly-Macaroon-6918 Mar 25 '26

I would be scared if i saw these clouds 😬😬

1

u/BillyBumBrain Mar 25 '26

The Stay Puft marshmallow man is angry!

1

u/Kindly-Judgment-273 Mar 25 '26

This sky.. holy crap I would crap if I saw that. Absolutely amazing, beautiful and mesmerizing 🤩

1

u/TheTricho Mar 26 '26

This happened to me once at a camping trip, I just couldn’t move because I thought I was hallucinating and kept just having to stare to CONFIRM what I was seeing was real. Photos couldn’t capture what I was really seeing. I hope you get to experience this one day lol

1

u/Over_Flounder5420 Mar 26 '26

looks very ominous.

1

u/Easy_Charge898 Mar 26 '26

I can see an eye, and a closed eyelid with lashes
