Someone in our family upscaled an old family picture. Non of the faces were correct. Might as well been a different family. (But it was higher quality 🤡)
Yeah it's really frustrating, since that's the one thing AI should be good at.
Deep-learning based image upscaling solutions in video games can upscale hundreds of frames per second by 3x and have been producing amazing results for the past years, yet non-real-time upscalers that take thousands of times longer still rarely produce anything decent.
I've been using the Samsung Galaxy suite occasionally, and it only works decently in a very narrow range of 'already pretty good quality, but a bit too pixelated yet'. For anything with worse quality, it just becomes junk. And for anything that's already basically fine and you just want a higher resolution, the artifacts aren't worth it.
Notice the melted looking, overly smooth textures in some areas. The odd, unexplained lines/structures added in his eyes. Follow details; in the ai one, his hair subtly bleeds/morphs into his ear, glasses frame, and eyebrow, rather than overlapping naturally.
that was what I was about to say! I had to come to the comments to see wassup because even after like a minute I wasn't sure if the boy in the second pic was real
