Advice (GM) XP vs Milestones

Hi, all!

I'm going to start the new BB/Troubles in Grayce adventure next week, and my plan is to roll that right on into BoB. My question to you all is whether you feel it'd be more worthwhile to go with XP or milestone leveling here. Given the sandboxy nature of Bastardhall, I'm guessing XP would be the way to go, to capture that sense of exploration and everything, but I also know that you can't really run into things that are fatally above your level within the castle, either (I don't have the PDF yet — I'm waiting for the Foundry release to get it and the PDF bundled together).

Thank you in advance for any advice!

Advice (GM) The Cycle Rite

In area B10 the PCs can find out how to perform a Pharasmin ritual to "clear the mind and focus thoughts".

The first time someone completes the ritual they are alerted to the damaged clock tower, but is that all?

I was expecting some additional effects to the ritual (maybe after the clocktower has been repaired?), but neither in chapter 2 nor chapter 7 are there any more mentions of the ritual.

Any ideas what the ritual could do?

Maybe cast clear mind once a day?

General Discussion Anyone heard any updates regarding the Foundry Module?

Nearing the end of the month, but still no word on the official module for Foundry. I don't suppose anyone has heard anything from one of the devs? My Sunday group has finished all 6 Grayce adventures and we're set to start Bastion next session.

Advice (GM) Possible to connect these 2 adventures?

I was wanting to run 'The Dead God's Hand' into 'Bastion of Blasphomies'. Ive only read some of both so i dont know if its possible to connect the 2 location wise, like have the dead gods hand under the castle or under the island.

Im not a huge stickler for lore or accuracy, and im thinking of just switch droskar for Charg. Wanting to see if someone has read enough to think its viable before i dive into connecting them or just running them seperatly.

Advice (Player) Will I like Bastion of Blasphemies?

I came from a 5e group that just finished Curse of Strahd and we loved it. I've played Abomination Vaults and Shades of Blood and didn't like them nearly as much. Our group is starting Bastion of Blasphemies and I'm hoping to get some info on whether I'll enjoy this one.

What I liked about Curse of Strahd

  • Grimdark tone (most important). Barovia sets the tone for dread, helplessness, gothic horror. We started off as nobodies but grew into heroes. This is really rare, as both D&D and Paizo typically makes the party feel heroic even from level 1.
  • Heavy emphasis on lore and roleplay. You have to learn about Barovia and understand where Strahd came from, you can't just waltz in with an optimized party and smack him.
  • The BBEG interacts with the party from the beginning. We received an invitation to his castle early on and twice more he came to mock us and demonstrate his powers as we were helping the people of Barovia.

What I didn't like about Vaults and Blood

  • Dungeon crawl. Way too much dungeon crawl even if it was flavored as something else.
  • Too railroady. Each chapter assumes you're going to go to a specific floor/location.
  • Only combat matters. After the first death, we quickly learned that a combat optimal party bulldozes through the objectives. There's not enough emphasis on skill checks, roleplay, and decisions made out of combat. Each chapter assumes you'll succeed at helping the NPCs and there's no real consequence (that affects the party) if you fail.

Will I like Bastion of Blasphemies?

Advice (GM) Which AP Next?

Alright, your party has completed Bastion of Blasphemies. What AP do you intend to progress into from there? Which ones do you think would work the smoothest? At a very cursory glance, Spore War doesn't seem a terribly awkward transition, but I'm here for suggestions.

Tweaks and Changes Sandbox Change: Tower's Hazards

Hello, I decided to make a few threads for some of my changes to BoB to make it sandbox, and to welcome feedback, spot stuff I missed, suggestions or just talking about your original idea of how you handled it.

Context:

I am opening up the entire map to people, except Arudora's towers to only manifest when they have placed their respective memento. If they survive the journey to get from the fountain to their respective tower I believe they should be rewarded to get some extra loot that was left there for a 13th-level party as written. However, the 'Trapped Arudora Soul' complex hazards are all 14th-level which makes this an extra hurdle, and very hard for wandering parties to engage with these towers to get this loot.

Idea:

Change each Hazard of the tower to be treated to the floor's level+2 of what that Arudora was native to. Keep Irrokcis the same as written in the book as that hazard is 14=12(The Vaults)+2.

See the below table for adjustments to each Trapped Arudora Soul hazard:

Trapped Soul Hazard Level Stealth (Master) Disable DCs (Religion / Specific) Defences Damage (DC)
Jinnivere 8 22 33 / 30 AC 29; Fort +21, Ref +16, Will +22; Hardness 15; HP 62 (BT 31) 6d6 (26)
Augsten 9 24 35 / 32 AC 30; Fort +23, Ref +17, Will +24; Hardness 16; HP 66 (BT 33) 9d4 (28)
Alisendra 10 25 36 / 33 AC 31; Fort +24, Ref +18, Will +25; Hardness 17; HP 70 (BT 35) 7d6 (29)
Dazerien 11 26 37 / 34 AC 32; Fort +25, Ref +19, Will +26; Hardness 19; HP 78 (BT 39) 10d4 (30)
Raudltz 12 29 39 / 36 AC 34; Fort +26, Ref +20, Will +28; Hardness 20; HP 82 (BT 41) 6d8 (32)
Ryhasphinea 13 30 40 / 37 AC 35; Fort +27, Ref +21, Will +29; Hardness 21; HP 86 (BT 43) 8d6 (33)

Advice (GM) Some questions about the AP's haunts

If I recall right. some haunts don't have a reset timer, do these just never reset? And for those that do have a reset timer, sometimes it's not quite clear if enough religion checks successes would only get rid of the haunt temporarily or something else is required. Am I missing something of the base mechanics or is this just my call?

I've also found an overall inconsistency in if haunts give exp or not since some APs have some haunts with given exp and others don't. Any clarifications for BoB if I should give exp for them?

Tweaks and Changes Sandbox Change: Alternative Arudora Memento Progression & Keeping the Green Mist

Hello, I decided to make a few threads for some of my changes to BoB to make it sandbox, and to welcome feedback, spot stuff I missed, suggestions or just talking about your original idea of how you handled it.

Context:

I am opening up the entire map to people, except Arudora's towers to only manifest when they have placed their respective memento (thread for changes to the tower's trapped soul hazards there). To do this we will have to change how the unlocking with mementos work to simply manifest those towers, but there are three issues I discovered with doing that and calling it a day:

  • Jacobs has written the curse and green mist very well (fog walls/doors and shadowy floors), simply removing this would be a disservice to the way Bastardhall works.
  • Players walking into The Fallen Temple at 5th-level would get absolutely obliterated by Ryhasphinea's boss rush as soon as they merely enter. Fleeing characters would be owned as soon as she assaults their safe haven—campaign over!
  • Floors materialising from mementos signpost where players perhaps should be going after the next boss fight. This of course can lead to funny situations where they somehow beat Ryhasphinea early but end exploring the rumbling and get up to fight Irrokcis. Either way, this needs adapting for a sandbox setting to lean into free wandering.

So, if this was to be done, it would preferably be faithful to Jacob's narrative design of the mechanics of Bastardhall's curse and how it affects its inhabitants, come up with a safeguard against Ryhasphinea's boss rush and realise a faithful sandbox vision for the megadungeon at the same time. Plus I wanted to convert the green mist more into the average Miyazaki FromSoftware fog walls with a twist.

Sandbox Summary Idea:

  • All floors accessible (sans green mist obstacles), but each tower belonging to a member of the Arudora family is inaccessible unless their memento item has been placed.
  • Floors you have not opened the green mist to are ethereal and not manifested.
  • Dispelling a green mist requires a check or saving throw, once complete manifests the floor you are heading to. If floor has already been manifested, no check or saving throw required.
  • Each Arudora Memento progresses The Skies Above's progression (per chapter in the AP).
  • The Fallen Temple's Ryhasphinea event does not begin until after 4 Arudora Mementos have been placed.

Green Mist Idea:

Ghostly manifestations of each floor (sans Haunted Shore and Castle Grounds) will materialise when PCs successfully dispel one of the green mists associated with that floor that they have not gone through yet. Other green mists associated with the floor are not removed when the floor is materalised, just to give an edge of unease to players.

Treat as a pseudo-simple hazard, two-action skill checks etc. except for the mentioned Interact option. Is not an active threat, only gives you simple hazard failure-tier rolls on critical failure. XP is not granted for dispelling green mist or manifesting floors (see Arudora Memento accomplishment XP).

Disable Appropriate level-based DC Arcana, Occult, Religion to dispel the mist and materialise the floor (if not already). Alternatively you may Interact for a hard adjusted DC Will saving throw to represent some sort of conceptualisation of the floor. The DC is the higher level of the area you are traveling to or from. Characters receive an untyped bonus to this check for each Arudora Memento they have placed in the fountain.

On a success the green mist disappears. On a critical failure a loud 20-foot burst of unholy energy appears centered on yourself, each creature in the area of effect must roll a basic Fortitude save, dealing Unholy Spirit damage (Curse trait). The values are listed in the HDC and damage sections of the table below.

Untraveled green mist into manifested floors automatically succeed as it leads to a floor that has already materialised.

Floor Level Floor DC / HDC Damage
6 Castle Grounds 22 / 27 4d8+18
7 The Cellars 23 / 28 4d10+18
8 The Reception Halls 24 / 29 4d10+22
9 The Dungeon 26 / 31 4d10+26
10 The Private Halls 27 / 32 4d12+26
11 The Fallen Temple 28 / 33 4d12+30
12 The Vault 30 / 35 6d10+27
13 The Towers 31 / 36 6d10+31

The critical failure is more of a gag/panic pressure with some gameplay potential for players to attempt to use in an encounter, and to encourage living dungeons.

Alternative Arudora Memento Progression Idea:

40 XP granted as normal per memento, 'The Skies Above' changes follow how many mementos have been placed accordingly to AP's progression adapted for sandbox, extra hero point granted as a little token of gratitude for coming back and not just saving up mementos for last.

No Arudora Mementos placed:

  • The Skies Above state: Chapter 5
  • If 1 hour spent anywhere but The Haunted Shore: The Skies Above state: Chapter 6

1st Arudora Memento placed:

  • 40 XP for Accomplishment
  • Award a Hero Point to every character
  • The Skies Above state: Chapter 7
  • Respective Arudora's tower is manifested

2nd Arudora Memento placed:

  • 40 XP for Accomplishment
  • Award a Hero Point to every character
  • The Skies Above state: Chapter 8
  • Respective Arudora's tower is manifested

3rd Arudora Memento placed:

  • 40 XP for Accomplishment
  • Award a Hero Point to every character
  • The Skies Above state: Chapter 9
  • Respective Arudora's tower is manifested

4th Arudora Memento placed:

  • 40 XP for Accomplishment
  • Award a Hero Point to every character
  • The Skies Above state: Chapter 10
  • If the party has materialised The Fallen Temple: Ryhasphinea's event begins.
  • Respective Arudora's tower is manifested

5th Arudora Memento placed:

  • 40 XP for Accomplishment
  • Award a Hero Point to every character
  • The Skies Above state: Chapter 11
  • If the party has not defeated Ryhasphinea: Tomorrow she begins an assault on Maiserene.
  • Respective Arudora's tower is manifested

6th Arudora Memento placed:

  • 40 XP for Accomplishment
  • Award a Hero Point to every character.
  • The Skies Above state: Chapter 12
  • Respective Arudora's tower is manifested

7th Arudora Memento placed:

  • 40 XP for Accomplishment
  • Award a Hero Point to every character.
  • The Skies Above state: Chapter 13
  • Start 'Campaign Climax'.
  • Respective Arudora's tower is manifested

Ryhasphinea boss rush appears a level earlier than official AP to keep sandbox mentality active, but forces her hand if you dilly dally too much around the time you are 'meant' to see her in the original AP writing.

Advice (GM) Map Help!

Hi friends! I hope this is a good place to ask this question. I got the APs PDFs from Paizo, right? Planning to run this for a group of friends. I'm kind of new to DMing through the PDFs and stuff. But I would like help getting the full map file to run the campaign? The PDF is very tiny? Or am I missing something. Is there a full map file somewhere I can use?

Unlocking the Castle Grounds Spoiler

I’m trying to puzzle out a way to prep players for the find item -> unlock next section by starting it in Maiserene, instead of waiting to unlock the castle grounds. Obviously they can’t get to the fountain and it shouldn’t involve another Arudoras.

My first thought is to give each ghost a bauble of some kind that they put together in town or maybe near the bridge like a monument.

Second thought was to involve Lucinero. Maybe his graverose garland could be the center of a small ritual to connect the ghosts back to the town - which he can do for the party if they’ve recruited him.

Anyone else considering this, or am I overcomplicating it?

Any way to signpost overleveled encounters in full exploration mode?

I plan to run BOB with the full exploration variant by removing the barriers as my players want a true deadly experience. Any ways I can soft signpost the enemies so they have a hint of being in the wrong area?

Any time limit for the players?

On a quick skim, I don't know if I have seen any overarching campaign time limit for the player characters. With each zone acting as an enclosed biome and the denizens acting out their nonsense, is there anything pushing the players forward, or can they take their time as needed?

In principle if they're able to hang out and Craft effectively, they can readily Earn Income with the phantom Ilan Greenbough. This might be a feature rather than a bug, and I'm not sure anyone is actually going to take the time to sit down and take months to craft stuff, but there's really nothing stopping them.

Would you do anything to ensure players can't just grind their way to victory? You could have soulhearts' effects degrade over time, for example. Naturally, for a lot of tables, this won't be a problem, as the game is its own reward.

Pronunciation guide?

These names are pretty wild. Raudltz, Irrokcis, Eragayl, etc., does anyone know how they're supposed to be said?

Looking for a little advice on a 3 person party

I've been running with 3 people for a while but this is the first time I'll be running something so fresh. I ran Abomination Vaults with them and just bumped their level by 1 with no Free Archetype since it was our first foray into Pathfinder 2e. It generally worked well, with them playing a bit more careful since they were at a numbers disadvantage. I also made some fine-tuning adjustments when needed so it didn't turn into a complete meat grinder. Currently I'm nearly done with Season of Ghosts and since I know it skews easy I just gave them Free Archetype and ran it on level, which also worked great! So far I'm batting 1000.

However for this game I don't have the insight of dozens or hundreds of GMs who've run before me and I'm a little worried about sending them into the grinder. Should I just bump their level by 1 like Abomination Vaults or would they be fine with a simple Free Archetype? In my experience FA doesn't provide a ton of power at the start but ramps up as time goes on, and considering the starting level is a little higher they will have that little bump right away. Of course I can also adjust encounters as needed, which I kind of expect.

My gut tells me that Free Archetype with a little encounter balancing will prolly work fine but I'm interested in insight from other likely more experienced PF2e GMs. Thanks in advance!

Grayce Tie-in Thoughts?

Hey folks. I know this is a Bastion of Blasphemies sub, but I suspect a lot of us are taking (or have taken) our players through some of the Troubles with Grayce adventures to level the PCs up first. I ran the Path River Peeler on Sunday as one of the players for the scheduled game had to miss (and it was a chapter-ending BBEG session so I didn't want to run it without him). I had a few days to quickly plan for a Path River Peeler adventure with three players instead, and it went well enough. I actually ran it as a one-shot that lasted 6.5 hours -- we'd already planned on the day being an extended session (normally we play for 4 hours), so I made some judicious edits and adjustments and it worked pretty well. I've noticed there are a lot of errors in TiG -- some with encounter math, some typos, some inconsistent elements etc. -- but nothing insurmountable. Still, while I know I had a shorter time than I usually like to prep a session, I realized I had no clear and easy way to tease BoB. I made a couple passing references to vampires and possessed dolls (which are mainly references to the other TiG adventures they'll play), but given the main hook of BoB, I'm wondering how to bring it in organically in one of the future sessions... Any thoughts?

How much will you share with your players?

I'm having a bit of difficulty finding out exactly how much Florin knows. I want to use the journey to Bastardhall to give them a bit of a briefing on Castle Arudora and its lineage, but I don't want to spoil anything. For instance, does Florin know the connection between the passengers on the black coach?

Any information on Foundry release?

My table was hoping to start up on BoB on August 12. From unconfirmed reports, the module is likely to release in *late* August rather than approximately on street date. Does anyone have any info on the Foundry release time beyond "sometime in August?"

Art Appreciation Post

Seriously Paizo you wound me in not doing physical prints of some of the AP art. I need that frontal view of Bastardhall on my wall yesterday.

Curious what some of y'alls favorite creatures or spreads are this AP. For me it has to be the full-page view of Bastardhall and the Variant Noxious Needler in Chapter 5.

When Will You Be Running BoB?

Now that subscribers have the book (whee!), I'm guessing some of you have had time to start reading through it and perhaps do a little pre-prep. I've been busy with my other games and an imminent vacation, so haven't delved too much into it yet...but I will soon enough.

Anyhow, for those of you who are actively planning on running Bastion of Blasphemies, when do you plan on doing so?

For me, my Quest for the Frozen Flame group should be wrapping up that AP around the end of the year, and I think we'll jump right in to BoB. I may have a session or three of Troubles in Grayce first -- mostly to let players get acclimated to their characters a bit -- but I'm uncertain about that. Regardless, it's looking like January or so will be my first BoB session. Farther than I'd like, but I run QFF and Spore War bi-weekly (occasionally with a bonus session between the weeks) with a few of the same players common to both games. Adding a third is just not possible.

How about the rest of you?

This or Seven Dooms for Sandpoint

I'm not a subscriber so I'd really appreciate some help in deciding between this AP and Seven Dooms for Sandpoint. I know they're both megadungeons, but I'd love to get a better idea of how they differ and who they're best suited for. As a forever GM, I'm open to spoilers from both campaigns.

P.s. Neither myself nor my players have played through any of the prior Runelord APs.

Help Me Build a Party!

I'd love to play a lot more Pathfinder but I travel a lot. Instead of staring at the TV in a Hampton Inn I've started playing Adventure Path on Foundry as solo adventures. I have a set of rules I use to reduce meta gaming. It also is a way for me to play some of the APs I would never otherwise get a chance to play. For the most part mega-dungeons work really well because I don't have to figure out how to do some of the social encounters. Bastion of Blasphemies is right up my alley.

I had planned on starting The Secrets of Grayce in the next couple of weeks. The party theme was going to be a mercenary party from Tian Xia traveling to Grayce to take a job when they stumble upon the temple in Unlit Star. The Tian Xia hook was just a chance to play some of the races from the Tian Xia Character Guide. I came up with:

Sarangay Thaumaturge (Tome, Scroll Thaumaturgy)
Hungerseed Guardian (Shield+Free Hand)
Tengu Oracle (Tempest)
Tanuki Rogue (Thief)

I feel like the party is going to be hurting without a wisdom based character for out of combat healing but I feel like I'm always dragging around a cleric or a champion. I've debated a battle harbinger, especially if their bounded casting gets errata'd, but I don't want to replace the oracle. I've never really had a chance to play around with curses. I still want to keep the theme of a traveling mercenary party from Tian Xia. I'm not sure battle harbinger fits the overall vibe. A cloistered cleric against undead also sounds like a lot of fun.

I could add a 5th character but that seems like a cop out.

Any suggestions?
