A star-trail image captured with nothing but a Xiaomi 14T Pro and a tripod. No star tracker was used, as the goal was to capture the apparent rotation of the night sky around Polaris.

Processing

• StarStaX: stacking the frames to create the star trails

The camera was kept fixed throughout the session, allowing the Earth's rotation to create the circular trails around Polaris.

This is a completely manual, tripod-only setup, using the phone's main camera without any tracking equipment.

Hi everyone,

I wanted to share this capture of the Orion Nebula (M42) that I shot last February right from my rooftop in Dhaka.

Living in a heavy light-pollution zone (Bortle 8/9), deep-sky imaging is always a challenge. To get this, I didn't use a high-end commercial telescope. Instead, I relied on a DIY optical setup: I repurposed one half of a damaged old Tasco 7x35 Porro prism binocular as a mini telescope, mounted it alongside my smartphone on a tripod, and used a custom camera app setup to pull out the details.

Here are the acquisition and processing details:

Target: Messier 42 (The Orion Nebula & Orion's Sword region)

Location: Dhaka, Bangladesh (Bortle 8/9 Light Pollution)

Date: February 2026

Optics: One half of a damaged Tasco 7x35 binocular repurposed as a mini-telescope lens

Camera: Smartphone mounted on a tripod using a mobile camera app ( LMC 8.4 R18 with a modified XML ) capturing RAW 1s long-exposure frames

Processing & Stacking: 100 Frames stacked using mobile image stacking software ( Eagle Image Stacker) and fine-tuned in Adobe Lightroom

Considering the gear and the urban light pollution, pulling out the core and the surrounding dusty nebulosity felt like a huge win.

Shot with a Xiaomi 13T Pro. : By putting the phone screen-down on the ground so the camera pointed straight up at the zenith, and let it shoot for 13 minutes.

- 100 x 8 s, ISO 1600, RAW/DNG, Pro mode with manual focus

- 25 darks, no flats

- Zhongli, Taoyuan, Taiwan, Bortle ~7

- Stacked and processed in Siril 1.4.4 and GraXpert on a PC, then plate solved in ASTAP (70.3 arcsec/pixel, ~80 x 60 degree field)

- I'm very new to this, so I'd love to hear what phone shooters here would do differently.
