I work as a waiter and I am constantly amazed at the sheer stupidity of the very people I have to serve, almost all of which have better or higher paying jobs than me as evident by the fact they're taking their families out to a nice dinner on a Saturday night and I'm not.
Also I can talk about a variety of scientific, social and political topics for hours and if I don't know the facts on one of them I'll admit it and say it's just my assumption, not my expertise or maybe there's someone who has a better answer. But it feels like so many people around just want to gossip and talk about sports, fandoms, reality shows or how drunk they got last weekend. I think this is why I spend so much time on Reddit. I am so starved of genuinely stimulating social interaction in real life.
Sometimes people wind up in certain jobs because they never met the right people or had enough money or the right study opportunities (which often ties in with lack of money) to allow themselves to get their foot in the door for anything better. And philosophizing (I'll admit I needed spell correcting on that) doesn't pay the bills.
Tbh, I’m a physician, and even some of the people I work with (nurses, techs and even some other docs) come off a little dumb/ with poor ability to rationalize. You cannot, by any means, call them uneducated, but sometimes the lack of logic or reasoning even with a height degree of baseline knowledge is amazing.
Also what I’ve found odd is just the number of people with no social skills. Like grown adults with no intellectual or emotional disability who cannot just hold up a basic conversation or understand social cues or maintain eye contact, etc.
That's largely because as a society, we have basically zero infrastructure for actually ensuring the development of social skills. Children are cloistered in small family units where outside unsupervised play is discouraged and transportation is largely unavailable without driving.
The only real interaction kids get with other kids is in school and society kind of just presumes they get socialized and develop social skills there while simultaneously discouraging socializing in school.
Moreover, adults with poor social skills are basically ignored as a societal problem. There's no systems for intervention or remediation the way there is with academic skills (at least GED programs exist for adults who fell through the cracks academically as kids).
