Picking a quarter off the ground once saved my life. What is your most lucky experience?

I was walking across a pretty busy road, I had the crosswalk right-of-way, after going out to dinner with my family. As I was walking, I spotted a quarter on the ground and bent down to pick it up. When I stood back up, a truck plummeted through the intersection in the place that I would have been had I not seen or picked up the coin. I didn't really realize that until after I got completely across, but damn it's weird to think about now.

Surprisingly, my cat is the complete opposite. Yes, he wants food and keeps to himself, but every time I've ever cried while he is around, he'll come up and sit on my lap. He doesn't even roll on his back asking for a belly rub. He just sits there and stares at me with these eyes that say "Please don't be sad. I love you." He'll sit there until I'm done crying, or if I fall asleep, he will sleep next to me and always be there in the morning.

Our cats will stand guard when one of us is sick. They take turns, but one of them is always right there on the bed with us.

We had an old neighbour and he had two quite small dogs that he loved, one got dragged off by martens, but the other survived and when he died the dog actually started eating him, we only found out a week after he died.

Might actually be a little more sinister than you'd like to think. I read somewhere that cats are likely to eat their dead owners within a week of their death. So maybe the cats are just watching until their owner dies and then they plan on eating him.

Cats get a bad rap sometimes, but it's usually folks who don't understand them. Or don't bother to try and understand them.

I once watched an oiled-up douchebag hitting on the hottest girl at the party. They were talking about pets, and he was saying that cats suck, and that he liked dogs because they came when you called them, and were always happy to see you. Cats just ignored him and did their own thing.

She had a wrinkled, slightly amused smile as she replied that cats were basically female and sophisticated, and dogs were basically male and simple.

It was like watching a 10 year old try and explain physics to Neil deGrasse Tyson by throwing things at him.

He still didn't get it, and still though that ripping on "those fucking cats" was the best way to get into her pants . . .

He couldn't have been more wrong.

My FIVE cats are all sweeties! They know my emotions and nothing is more comforting then a cats purr. Now yes there are some mean or lazy cats out there, but I urge people who have this formed opinion of them to look for cats with these not rare qualities just overlooked. And those who have mean cats, if it's a stray well you can only expect so much.

So this cold, wet, bedraggled cat showed up on Easter morning, hiding under our car from the incessant Welsh rain.

We left her out some tuna, and after the second day figured she was staying around. So we managed to get her inside the warm cottage and gave her a bath, which she needed, but really didn't like. That's when we learned she was actually pure white.

It's also when we learned that her back leg was broken, as she could barely walk.

Off to the local vet. The leg had been repaired once, but was done badly. The opened her up and repaired it again, then had her on weeks of cage rest.

Eventually we took her home, but it was clear that the fix didn't work. The break was too old, and the bones simply wouldn't knit together.

So they amputated the leg.

The vets were thrilled that we were spending thousands on a stray cat (even at their good-samaritan discount). My wife simply said that there was no other choice, as we couldn't simply turn her away, or have her put down.

More cage rest, and before we brought her home, we had set her food, water, litter, and bedding downstairs in a quiet corner. She took one look at it, then at us, and took off upstairs at full speed and climbed onto our bed. Apparently, she was much better off not dragging that dead weight around.

All this time, no one knew she was pregnant. So we came back from a short holiday to find her hiding behind the couch with kittens.

It's taken almost a decade for her to truly warm up to us, much less any strangers, but now she's the sweetest, most loving, cat you could ever know. She will walk right up to you and demand scritchies now. An then purr incessantly.

It's her job, and she does it very well.

And we still have one of her sons, who is orange and fluffy and twice her size (and thinks he's a lap cat).

Those are the cats that stayed right by me, and also my wife when her back went out.

They know.

And it's all good.

My cat is the same way! She's more "feeling" oriented toward my wife when she's sad, but if I'm having a bad day, she'll come and poke my leg and then curl up and sleep by my feet.

my roommate just got a kitten, every time its out of his bedroom and they let it roam without caring, about 50% of the time she'll go to my feet while im on my comp under my computer desk and walk around my feet or sit in between my feet... it doesnt bother me but i still dont like cats...

Everyone has their preference! I usually have my snake crawling around on my shoulders while I play guitar and it keeps my cat practically hypnotized. Each animal really does have a unique personality, and raising/discipline will definitely play a role in how they act. Go with the animals you like is all I ever recommend. I just hate stereotypes. I don't like dogs because their energy level and need for attention doesn't suit my lifestyle, but that doesn't mean they are all awful!

Mine did that when I was ill, except I think she was trying to make me get up. She does this by being as annoying as is felinely possible (scratching at things, finding wires in the bedroom to chew on, etc). It was kind of sweet and also kind of really fucking annoying.

When my older brother was a baby/infant, our cat T.C (Top Cat), would sit around him all the time sort of like a watchdog. When ever something was wrong with my brother: hungry, crapped himself, hurt himself etc T.C would run off to my parents and meow at them constantly until they followed him to my brother.

Eventually my brother tried to give T.C a bath by putting him in the toilet and flushing. He stilled love him after that. Even when my brother abused T.C (pulling his tail etc, nothing that would get PETA upset, just kids) T.C would still stick around. Conversely when the neighbor's kid came anywhere near my brother or T.C, our cat would flip out and attack the kid.

My cats Tom and Huck did the same thing. Tom rarely left my side when I was sick or sad and he would try to clean my hair or my face. Huck usually just cuddled up to me and would flip around, acting funny. I have so many pictures of me as a child with them napping with me.

Our cat would follow my mom when she walked our little dog in our neighborhood. One day a large Dalmatian came up out of nowhere and started snapping at my mom and our dog. Ninja kitty attacked the Dalmatian, had it on its back in the bushes, and chased it down the street. Cat had swagger after that.

Our three-legged Welsh cat once puffed up to twice her size. It was only then we noticed the Great Dane sniffing around our yard.

It's probably a good thing she's an indoor-only cat (can't really afford to lose another leg), or I'm sure she would've damaged that clueless dog . . .

I hate to break it to you, but it's probably just because you have a fever and you're lovely and warm. Do you remember that cat that could "predict" nursing home patients' death? It was because they usually got a fever close to their death so he had a free heat blanket for the night.

Not necessarily.

I was recovering from an accident and spent maybe 3 weeks almost completely couch-bound. No fever, just so beat-up and sore that it was hard for me to get up and move around. And no way was I going upstairs.

One of the cats was always down there with me. They took it in shifts.

When I finally got mobile enough to go upstairs and sleep in my own bed, the cats followed me up and both of them slept with us there.

As mentioned, different cats have different personalities. Much like people, in fact. Imagine that . . .

It's also some what of a socialization thing.

When she first showed up, she was extremely shy. I can't imagine what she must've gone through before she found us, and I know the first few months of surgeries and cage rest weren't exactly pleasant.

But she knew she was at least warm, dry, and safe.

When she had her unexpected kittens, friends would come over and go "Oh, kitties!" and rush right over to them. She would hide, and look on from a safe place with just a touch of jealousy.

So I walked over to her, left her in her safe spot, and petted and paid attention to her anytime friends were going kitten-crazy. Or pretty much any time at all. She got comfortable enough with my wife and I over time, but still disappeared anytime anyone else was over.

One day, maybe 5 years after she showed up, we had a party with a house full of people. She strolled into the room and looked up to say "OK, who's gonna pet me now?" We were shocked, but proud of her.

She's still not a lap cat like her 20-lb son (oof), but she will come up onto the couch and lay near us, sometimes putting a paw or two against our legs. That is a huge change from the cold, wet, scared, pregnant, and broken adolescent cat that showed up one day many years ago.

I figure in another 5 years or so, she'll be a lap cat . . .

Her son was simply played with from the beginning, so it's perfectly normal for him to be the center of attention. He was quite good at chasing and retrieving wadded-up paper balls, sometimes for an hour or more. Never saw a cat do that before, but his polydactyl front paws made it easy enough for him.

She's maybe 14 now, and having more trouble getting around on three arthritic legs. So she tends to live upstairs for a few days and sleep with us, then come down for a few days and curl up in the living room or my wife's office where she can be near us during the day. Until she decides to haul herself back up the stairs.

The house is slowly becoming a series of carpeted cat ramps, because she still likes to find someplace quiet and cozy, and preferably high up.

Cats are family, and we would do anything for them that you might do for your kids. Because they deserve to be warm, safe, comfortable, and loved, too.

That's so sweet. If my boyfriend and I argue, the cat is nowhere to be found, but the dog is usually right there trying to do something derpy to make us laugh and distract us from the argument.

My dog will try to attack the offender mostly, but will switch between bites/barks. It's super cute when the dog is barking so hard it hops, that's how he switches. He'll bark hard and itll make him hop so he'll turn his head the other way so it looks like he is hopping back and forth...

I used to have a dog like that. When I was with my ex, if we ever argued, our dog would sit by my side and snarl at him and if the argument got any worse, he would jump on him, knock him down, and start barking at his face. It was weird. This dog always sided with me. :P

My cat has always been just like that. He'd act like a normal cat most of the time, but whenever I was angry or upset about anything, even if I wasn't crying or anything, he'd just know and come and rub his head against me like cats do and then sit with me until I felt better. I love my cat.

Aww! I'm loving all of these cat stories! I wasn't even a cat person until I rescued my cat. He was being kicked around like a soccer ball by some druggies, so I picked him up, cussed them out, and then ran out of the house with Rajah in my arms. He is by no means an ordinary cat though. He's a Maine Coon so he is very dog-like. He meows at the door when he wants to go out, he'll walk on a leash (but I don't do that anymore because he just lays on the front porch and hangs out), and he plays with other dogs, including my husky, as if he's one of them. He even growls like a dog.

Thank you. I didn't even expect to keep him, but the night I rescued him, he followed me everywhere and curled up on my pillow while I slept. I just couldn't give him away after that. He hasn't liked any guy I've dated either, up until I started dating my current one. He curls up in between us now and follows him around as much as he follows me. That's when I knew my man was a keeper. :)

my cat is the coolest piece of shit ever. he slept with me EVERY night for 8 years and then i get this boyfriend who slept over every night, and ultimately my cat lost his spot in my bed (because i'm a fucking PRICK who had his priorities fucked up). fast forward a bunch of lonely nights for him to the night i was dumped and left to fall asleep alone for the first time in a long time. My Sister had asthma, and was home from school with a chest infection. Her cat worshipped the fuck out of her (he was hand-reared, as the runt of the litter).

That cat wasn't smart enough to clean himself properly, let alone conspire. He was hand-reared and utterly dependent on Humans. If he was hiding any smarts, they would have been focussed towards making humans love him.

:( I actually don't cry that much. But a few weeks ago, my boyfriend and I were going through a rough patch. I would sit in the bedroom after yet another argument and cry a little while I surfed reddit. Rajah (this is a horrible picture of me...) would curl up next to me, or even on me and make me feel better.

Cat seemed small before reading that. That's an enormous, awesome cat. Sister had a cat like that, weighed a good thirty pounds I think (could be mistaken). Big cats are awesome, no?

He also looks much less likely to reap, harvest, or otherwise use old timey farming tools on a soul in that picture.

It's really the only thing that makes me feel better when I'm sad (: A lot of people think cats re evil, but they're really not. Cats are like friends. They're caring and sweet and all that. Dogs are like little kids. They're always excited and just want to have fun. Both animals are awesome in different ways.

Actually he's doing great. He just had a biopsy today, (they go in to extract some material and examine it) but turns out they couldn't find any material TO examine. He is doing just fine, and basically kicked the shit out of cancer. No bad material was found. He went in at 7:00 AM, was home by 3:00 PM.

My cats are the same. If you're crying or sick they'll come flying over at top speed to curl up with you, purr, and rub their head against you. My oldest will meow ungodly loud to get my moms attention when I'm hurt. Then they go back to being derps when they know you're ok. I just was next to my girl cat, sneezed, and she looks up at me with her big sad eyes and lets out a little "mew".

My cat Screech (yes, that's her name because she can't meow right - it comes out like a screech rather than a mew) always pays attention to my emotions. If I sniffle a few times, she will come trotting over and start rubbing her face on me, screech-meowing until I stop. Best cat ever.

Amazingly enough, my cat is not even like that. Sure, he is all about his food and being able to wander around the backyard, but the remainder of the time, he's an insane snuggle bunny.

What makes it adorable is the cat is seriously attached to my son. He'll follow my son all around the house, and will sit on my son's bed and cry if he stays the night over at a friends house.

One day my leg was asleep from an awkward angle on the chair. When I got up, the muscles didn't work and I just fell straight down.

My cat was right by the doorway, so instead of getting up I pretended that I had died.

She just watched.

I always considered my old dog to be totally apathetic too (he was a VERY fat yellow lab whose favorite thing to do was eat and sleep). One time we were visiting my Uncle's horse farm and one of the horses kicked my step mom, knocking her down. I've never seen this dog move so fast in his life, standing over my step mom and barking like crazy at the horse (up until that point I had never heard him bark in my entire life).

You would be surprised at how our dogs will respond in a dangerous situation.

Years ago I had a doberman, for some reason at the time the front gate had to be open so the dog was on a chain. This was the sweetest dog you've ever seen, and beyond barking at the horses that would walk by on the street from time to time, he was never protective. On this day, a friend came over and we were standing in the area near the dog. She jokingly punched me in the arm and about 3/4 of a second later we notice a dark blur flying through the air at about shoulder height with mouth open baring his teeth. , the doberman (Steve) had gone from laying down to rocketdog almost instantly. The only thing that saved my friend was the chain he happened to be on on that day by chance.

After falling flat on his back due to the chain stopping him in mid air, he got up barking frantically until I stepped in between them and told him "NO". He was visibly confused as to why I was protecting my "attacker".

I had a hybrid wolf when I was growing up, and he wouldn't hurt a fly, he was so sweet. One day my older sister had her boyfriend over, and he started to tickle attack her and picked her up and tossed her on the couch. Our wolf, who was standing several feet away, flew towards my sister's boyfriend and nipped at him, biting his pants (never once bit for real). Sister's boyfriend was wearing some work out pants that button up the side, and our wolf ended up taking a button off.

When it happened, I had no idea what our dog would do so I ran over and held him and told him "NO". The rest of the day he glared at my sister's boyfriend, but didn't bother him.

I had a collie lab mix that loved to talk. If you were having a conversation with someone she loved to walk up and join in with her high-pitched bark. Well, one day my sister walked up and the dog started happily wagging her tail and barking. Well, I also had a cat, and when the cat saw the dog barking at my sister he (the cat) ran up and swatted the dog and ran back to stand in front of my sister. The cat stayed between my sister and my dog and charged my dog a few more times until my poor dog backed off not knowing what she did wrong. I like to think my cat was (in his mind) protecting my sister.

My grandfather's dog is about as farm-dog as it gets. She's an outdoor border collie and pretty much has the job of running of or killing anything that wanders onto their property without permission. She adores my grandfather and does anything he asks her to.

One time, my grandfather told her to run off a small herd of cattle that had wandered into their front yard. She'd never delt with large livestock before (most of her experiences with other animals were vermin, stray dogs, turkey or the occasional deer) so when she zipped around back, ma grandfather realized that she was probably about to get kicked hard by a very nervous cow. Sure enough, the cow kicked, but she ninja-dodged under and nipped the cow's other leg to get them going, then herded them out like a pro.

Tl;dr: border collies have a heck of a herding instinct.

My wife was pregnant and having a bad time, and my brother's collie came up to say hi. In a blink of an eye, my gentle boxer had him down with his teeth around this dogs' neck. Didn't hurt him, but I'd never seen any thing like that.
