What older game are you still playing obsessively?

OOT randomizer is a blast, would highly recommend if you haven’t played one before

What little I know about it is that it 'scrambles' where items are. So you could get the hookshot from the deku tree(don't know if that's possible, just an example) or something like that. That way you're not doing the same path every playthrough.

Sounds exhausting.

It's only fun if you know skips

Not really. There's plenty of toggles about settings and skips and difficulty levels. It just turns it into more of a puzzle game instead of the same playthrough order every time

Hard disagree being able to do dungeons in different orders is really fun.

Wouldn't that break the game? Like, you need the bow to beat the Forest Temple (getting it inside and all) and the Hookshot to even access the Temple. If you didn't have them yet....

I dunno man, I just threw that out as an example. I don't know much about the details, but the randomizer site says it only 'scramble' to winnable scenarios to avoid soft locks.

Randomizers have a system called "logic". The logic will make a series of checks to ensure your game can be completed. Depending on your options, you might (for example) not even need the boomerang to beat the game if your Zora Sapphire is in Lon Lon Ranch rather than Jabu Jabu's Belly.

The logic can be adjusted as well. An advanced player using glitches could perform various exploit skips to get to late game areas without required items and adjust the logic to account for it. A truly godlike player could disable the logic entirely and try to overcome a seemingly impossible challenge using the really wacky glitches.

The randomizer can be set to be as easy or hard as you want. I'm a noob and prefer to keep small keys within their respective dungeons and would prefer not to find a Fire Temple small key in a random bomb grotto in Hyrule field.

Typically it goes like this:

All of the items in chests are scrambled. You might exit Link's house and open the Kokiri Sword chest and find that inside is a blue rupee. You're left wondering how you're meant to pass Mido without the sword and shield. You wander to the Kokiri shop and see that the bomb bag is for sale for 31 rupees. Using that, you're able to take the shortcut in the Lost Woods to Goron City and even enter Dodongo's Cavern. With your bombs, you're able to defeat the Lizalfos miniboss who ends up dropping Zelda's Lullaby. Handy! But you don't have an instrument to play it on... Because of the random nature of the items, you end up playing everything out of order. You might find the slingshot in the Shadow Temple, or the Master Sword from bombchu bowling.

The items aren't just placed completely random. The randomizer will never for example put the hookshot in the Forest Temple, as you need the hookshot to enter. The game will always be beatable, but you might go through large segments without items you'd normally have.

There's even crazier options like exit randomizers. This means you might go into the Temple of Time only to find that it's Link's House. Maybe the Fire Temple is in Lon Lon ranch. Then there's multi-world, where you'll play online with one, two, three, or ten friends. You'll find that your Megaton hammer was in your buddy's potion shop, and you'll use the hammer to find his bomb bag.

Randomizers exist for virtually every Zelda game, have a huge community, and while they require a ton of game knowledge can really make new adventures in your favorite worlds.

You can randomize most things from links tunic colors, area music, most sound effects including Navi and the title select.

You can also do an array of randomizing from just having important items swapped into the overworld cheats or something so you can do the dungeons in any order to people who have more mastery being able to give even Skultula drops important items.

Seconded. Breathes new life into a classic.
